I think the whole magic of Dumble is that the amps were curated to the players. If you’re playing style doesn’t match up with the particular amp you’re playing, it won’t sound how he intended it to sound.

To be fair, saying all Dumbles sound the same is like saying all Fenders sound the same.
There are notable differences between a Princeton Reverb, a Deluxe Reverb, and a Twin Reverb, and it’s more than just small, medium, and large versions of the same thing. Every Dumble amp wasn’t an Overdrive Special, and even between the various Overdrive Specials he built there were differences just like there is a difference between Blackface Twin Reverb, a Silverface Twin Reverb, and 90s Twin Reverb.

Dumble's intention was that when he's gone - no more Dumble amplifiers. Robben says mr. Dumble did not pass on the technology/train any apprentice. This seems a bit contrary to what the guys here are selling, but perhaps I'm wrong, it's not a cashgrab and there are good intentions behind this project.

For the sake of argument, let’s say Dumbles are indeed the best amps ever made, even then the amount of legend and nonsense surrounding them is staggering.
Howard Alexander Dumble said more than once that he is the only person that can truly make a Dumble. It will be interesting to see how many hushed reverential statements and Mr. Dumble’s it will take to come up with the story they’ll need to get around that, let alone why they won’t be replicas.
I’m sure they’ll be able to build a great amp, no doubt, but we’ll see about the story.

The thing about dumbles that lots of people don't realise is that they vary TONS. I'm sure some of the praise for the dumble is cork sniffing nonsense, but I've seen a fair few demos and tried captures to know they are pretty nice. Not 10k+ nice, but I wouldn't spend that much on any amp.

I want to see blind tests with Dumbles vs classic Fenders as well as the new modellers (ie. the UA amp sim pedals, as well as Axe FX, Kemper and Helix). I have a very strong suspicion that no one in this video (or anyone else, for that matter) can reliably tell us which is which. I'm sure they are very excellent amps but I can't possibly imagine they're just head and shoulders above anything from Rivera, Carstens, Fuchs, Koch, or indeed anything high end from Fender, Vox, or Marshall.

They sound like they have a fuzz circuit in them when pushed - Clean sound is nice - Mark Tremonti digs them so they must be pretty good in the right hands - Joe Bonamasa uses them he blends them with other amps though! I'll take a Marshall or a Friedman though!

That amp was obviously set to strat or tele settings the humbuckers just push it over the edge into mud fuzz. He should back the volume down on that lp and it’d probably sweeten up on the low end nicely

Y’see, I think it might be a good way to praise the work and the genius of Mr Dumble if they made a sort of school for the new generations, i.e. how Dumble thought and made his own amps, so as to have some young minds who can grasp and evolve the Dumble style... a sort of laboratory school...

While I can understand some don’t get the hype in today’s world of infinite tonal options, for me this sound translates because I absolutely adore the tone of players like Robben. Yes there are klons and copies but there’s something special wrapped up in an unbelievable legacy…imagine jamming with your amp maker before it’s made…crazy! Suggestion…can you guys just call him Howard…”Mr. Dumble” was getting old…fantastic video though! Thanks guys

I got to play the Dumble amp owned by Santana when I visited Taylor's studio a month ago. Taylor is Drew's associate (younger long haired dude seen briefly at the beginning of the video). I know it sounds like an exaggeration but it's true that that amp makes you play better (whichever your level you're at) . It's not a magical or supernatural thing. It's just that the sound inspires you a lot. The hype is real!

I guess it's the dynamics and response the kind that only really makes a difference if you play a certain way, You can hear it when Robben Ford plays with Larry Carlton live. Ultimately it's just a tool like was mentioned in the video, if ever he lost that amp i'm sure he could find a way to recreate his sound some way else.

    • @Spidouz
      @Spidouz 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

At the time, they were probably good amps, but today, nobody cares the hype, they have nothing special. You can play a Dumble clone and you will also get the good dynamic… I have a Two-Rock and Dr Z and both amp have incredible good dynamic and awesome tone that actually sound way better than in this video… It’s the same thing with Klon… people think they need to spend $5K+ to have a Klon when there’s absolutely no magic dust components and no secret circuit. You can pick one of your favorite Klone pedal and it will sound just as good… If you don’t like the Klone, then you won’t like the Klon. Same thing with Dumble, if you don’t like clone from one of the known brand or a very good local amp engineer, then you wouldn’t like the original Dumble amp… any superlative about the man is just pure snake oil marketing…

It doesn’t sound good, I don’t get the hype. It’s like the Klon - plenty of pedals are just as good, but there’s this hype around certain products. It’s like those Gibsons that cost more used than new, which is just absurd. What kind of fool would buy a guitar like that?
Some people do buy them, but I’ve always thought they’re more collectors than real guitar players.
In the case of this amp, it sounds bad probably because of the speaker’s fault. A crappy speaker equals crappy sound, no matter how good the amp is.

I got a cheap Dumble-in-a-box clone pedal, the "Enchanted Tone" by Caline a few months ago, and I gotta say it does a pretty damn good job matching some of the tone of a Dumble, especially when hearing someone like Pete who can actually play to the sound properly!

I thought it sounded decent, you can definitely hear how rich it sounds harmonically when Pete hits a big open chord (especially on the top end). I think maybe the choice of guitar was not the best to show off the amp. Dumbles have a looser-low end than Marshall-style amps and a lot of midrange already. Plugging a LP into it may have led to it sounding a bit muddy and muffly in the lower frequencies. Most guys who use Dumbles are Strat guys which sonically is like the opposite of a LP. Heck even and SG or a Tele woulda come through pretty well Id bet. Anyways, cool video nonetheless. Thanks for posting👍.

LOL. It's funny because this newer one they built (that it appears Lee and Pete are demoing) sounds SO much like my Supro Galaxy 50 combo. The overdrive on that one has the same spitty/fuzzy thing going on that a lot of people hated when they came out (I love it). It has that same cascading gain structure that the Dumbles are known for. Very dark, not great for chords, but for blues licks it kills. Of course, my Galaxy 50 only cost me $500 from Sweetwater when they blew them out. I wouldn't pay tens of thousands or whatever they're charging for these new models for that sound. lol.
