Metal School - Ratt

  • Unfortunately, TH-cam made me cut this one to pieces, so I apologize for any weird edits. I figured I'd try to salvage what I could. Still a fun video though and a good reminder to listen to some Ratt!
As one of the big LA metal bands along with Quiet Riot and Motley Crue, Ratt had a run of four platinum albums in the '80s, before succumbing to pretty much every '80s metal cliche out there. But this video is mainly about the music, the albums, and the videos (as much as possible anyway) and taking a look at a band that is absolutely more than the sum of its parts. With the main lineup of Stephen Pearcy, Robbin Crosby, Warren DeMartini, Juan Croucier, and Bobby Blotzer, Ratt would reach international headliner status and crank out more great songs than you might expect or remember. Check it out and let me know what your favorite Ratt tracks are!

Ratt is one of those bands where going through the entire history is warranted. For reasons I don't quite understand, normies only seem to listen to the two first records, but their entire output with Robbin as well as the Infestation record is well worth owning for any classic hard rock or heavy metal fan.

@Lungho To me there are two modifiers to this. I don't think that the metal aspect of Ratt ever receded entirely, but rather that it was complemented by a bluesier approach over time. Way Cool Jr. wouldn't have worked on one of the first two albums, but it works like a charm on Reach for the Sky. As far as Detonator goes, it is very different from the other ones, and I can see people not liking that style, but for what it is I think it is a great album, and it might actually be the one I reach for the most these days. Warren's tone on the album, I can say without doubt, is one of my all-time favourites, equalled in that era only by George Lynch on Wicked Sensation.

Before I realized who he was, he came down to the Gift Shop in the middle of the night and bought ALL of our Red Vines, like, 4 cases of it and a burrito. Jon Bon Jovi walked up on top of a mountain of Marshalls, biker hat, mirrored sunglasses, American flag for a cape, wind blowing his hair back and you just knew "this band is going to be big".

I mostly dig thrash/heavy metal and I lean towards the more extreme sub-genres, but I gotta say - hair metal is my guilty pleasure. So many bands were so much more than power ballads and radio friendly hits, and were put in the glam box simply because of their looks. Whenever a song by Ratt, Dokken or Quiet Riot comes up - I never switch... a radio station in GTA :p

That's where I discovered Krokus (I thought "Long Stick Goes Boom" is some lost AC/DC song I never knew, lol), Queensrÿche, Autograph, Ratt, and, outside metal stuff - "Blue Monday" by New Order. Seriously, if you've never played/heard this one, then definitely check it out someday. V-Rock dialogue between young intern Lazlow and Cousin Ed are comedy gold, too!

Doooooood Robin was so clearly as important as anyone in the band. After Robin “fell ill” The albums never sounded the same. Filler tracks?!?! They really are one of the few bands from that era that didn’t put out any crap, until 99, when Stephen’s voice went south. Later they sorta got their game back!

Like many of the bands I know and love. I discovered Ratt through Beavis and Butthead with the song I Want A Woman. I'll never forgot Butthead's hilarious line... "I Want a woman too but I'm not up there singing some crappy song about it" lol. I love that song. Other bands I was introduced to through Beavis and Butthead (and the songs) were. Ozzy Osbourne, Shot In The Dark. Metallica, One. Pantera, Mouth Of War. Ministry, Just One Fix. Ethyl Meatplow, Devil's Johnson. White Zombie, Thunderkiss 65. Grim Reaper, Rock You To Hell. The Beloved, Sweet Harmony (not metal in the slightest but I liked it). Alice Cooper, Lost In America and so on

I can't believe you didn't mention John Corabi is the singer who replaced Vince Neil in Motley Crue! 😮😂 But yeah, I saw that tour in Wallingford, CT. in 2007 when they opened for Poison (don't get me started). Anyway, it was killer. But it was strange to hear Stephen getting tired during some songs when John Effing Corabi is standing on the same stage just singing backup. Anyway...Warren broke a string during the solo for Round And Round. John Finished it! It was great! The band sounded fantastic, despite Stephen struggling a little. At the NAMM show a few months later, January '08, I met Warren DeMartini and told him I was at that show. He laughed because he said he remembered it because that show was the first time that happened. He remarked how well John played the solo and his friend agreed. Then he told Warren the video was online and a lot of people were sharing it. Warren was actually very surprised. TH-cam was VERY new then. 😳

The EP is their best recording. Raw like Motley Too Fast For Love. I can't even buy the cd it's out of print and the asking price online starts at $100 last I checked. Spotify has all Ratt recordings even some Mickey Ratt but no EP. The thing I like most about Ratt is I like 99% of their songs and they have 5 albums during the hair metal era. Other favs like Poison only have 3, Skid Row 2, Cinderella 3, yada yada. 5 plus the EP plus their gold Ratt 81-91 makes for a great collection. Add the modern era's Infestation which could have been released after Detonator and fit in perfectly. Ratt n Roll 4ever!

I thought you already did this band. Must've mixed up with some other channel. Love this channel tho' and a big fan of the band Ratt. Ratt and Dokken are my favorite Glam Metal Bands! I remember first seeing "Round n' Round" song on a VHS tape I borrowed that had all the metal videos on it. The year was 1993 - Annihilator was my favorite metal band and I was mostly into Thrash, Speed and Heavy Metal but also like some Glam to spice things up. I instantly fell in love with the guitar solo and since I've rewinded back the solo so many times the song grew on me! Then I remember also catching the song Lay it Down on Headbanger's ball and then I kinda became a fan. Taped all of their albums although I don't think I've ever owned a single original Ratt album. Also never seen them live but they were great! I wish I could've seen them play live in the 80s - that would've been something! My favorite song today is Dance! :D
