Really loud and noisy old fluorescent preheat fixture from 1967!

  • This is a really old and noisy fixture from 1967! Just listen to those sounds and watch how it flickers when it starts!! Just amazing!
    The humming from the ballast must be produced by the old magnetic core being separated by wear and heat.
    I think it is a 40W linear fluorescent, with a Sylvania starter... I don't know what kind of ballast it uses, but as this is located on a really old house dating back to 1968, which is just about to get through a process of remodeling, so I'll try to keep the ballast, starter (and perhaps the bulb) to myself.

      @@THEBULBHOMEMy school toilet has one of these. They are not as loud tho, however they are SCARY. The ballast is so loud when starting up that basically none of the kids dare to enter. And the toilet is usually left with the lights off as even after startup the ballast is still so noisy that the class near the toilet wouldn't be able to hear the teacher clearly. And this is because the ballast was actually left running 24/7 on a eol tube during summer break and it was completely burned by the time my school realised it was running the whole time. But they are still to lazy to upgrade to LEDs (:

    Due to the age and the fact that it might have had got more than 5 eol lamps with late replacement the ballast has gone weak which is the reason it is making noise but no issues until the copper is fine everything is good and if got fit in some other bathroom which has tiles on the wall the person who will use the bathroom in midnight will be terrified as heck

    Wow that ballast is noisy when starting. That tube looks to be a 4 foot t8, which should be used on electronic ballast (the kind that will never be in service for over 50 yrs as this one) in 1967 assuming this is the original ballast, and the fixture is 4 foot it should have the 4 foot T12 40 watt lamps installed. Maybe the ballast is noisy and running hot because it was not designed for the newer energy saving T8 lamps. Might want to go back to the 40 watt T12 (if you can still buy them)

    • @THEBULBHOME
      @THEBULBHOME  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yep, I also found interesting that it had a T8 bulb, but the house is not mine and whoever replaced that bulb the last time must have just gone to the hardware store and grabbed the first tube found. But anyway, the house is now being remodeled and I doubt this fixture is staying there any longer...

    In Korea, old fluorescent light devices are now disappearing.
    Most product lines replace and prefer LED lamps.
    Finally, the old fluorescent lamp facility was a 20W and 10W magnetic+ starter produced in 1982, but it has been discarded for a long time and can no longer be seen. ;(
    In addition, I'm using the 1994 40W magnetic + starter method.
    However, Korea no longer produces fluorescent lamps and imports them from other countries (China, Vietnam).
    I want to buy an F40T12 lamp (40W 32mm) because I want to feel vintage, but it was discontinued around 2010 due to Korea's mercury restriction policy, and now it can only be used in F40T10 lamps (40W 30mm or 28mm), so I have no choice but to call electrical parts stores in various regions to get a 32mm tube.

    • @THEBULBHOME
      @THEBULBHOME  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Same in Mexico and I think on the rest of the world... LED is taking us by storm, but fluorescent is still available at stores, mostly CFL and T8. I've recently imported some old T12 from the US and boy it was expensive, but worth it! haha

    I realized that it might be a F40T10 since they were pretty popular in Latin American countries at one point.

      I have lived in Mexico my whole life and I've never seen a T10, at least in my country (but don't know in the rest of LATAM); only T9 in circline lamps. SlimLine T12 was the standard here in Mexico from the early 1970s to 2012 when they got prohibited, along with T8 from 2010 onwards. Prior to 1970, preheat T12 was the standard. The lamp on the video is more likely the T8 variant of the F40T12 running on a F40T12 magnetic ballast.

      According to the following 2009 Mexican Osram Catalog on page 87, there is a listing for a F20T10/D lamp and a F40T10/D lamp as well:
      eledsol.com/onewebmedia/Osram.pdf
      It is possible that the tube in this video is possibly one of those Osram F40T10/D tubes because this tube looks thinner than a T12 but has a halophosphate daylight appearance when it is lit up and it looks larger than a T8 tube. It is possible that you might have not been aware of T10 tubes in Mexico yet until you look at the above catalog.

      Man, are you serious? Perhaps your link is broken or something but it redirects you to some electrical company in Albacete, which is located in SPAIN, veeeery far away from Mexico… It’s like saying something from the UK is from the US to put it in perspective… And also, have you ever been to Mexico before? How can you judge the knowledge of someone without even visiting his country by yourself, or at least realising that the catalogue you’re showing is from a totally different continent, like wtf… Also this channel has lots and lots of vintage equipment in his collection, and it seems to have been going on from a very long time (first vid uploaded in 2012), so he is no newbie, he must really know his stuff!

      @@lewisdsd I did post this link a while back but it somehow changed over time. As far as I recall, the catalog did list a “F40T10/D” tube. I just find it frustrating whenever old catalogs are deleted from the internet and nowhere to be found anymore. In addition, I just find it frustrating when youtube implemented auto-delete technology to automatically remove comments with links, which makes it so that my comments are frustratingly less credible to other viewers. Additionally, I just find it annoying whenever people try to be defensive of their beliefs even when I present them the counter-evidence to show proof.
      Here is the information taken directly from the 2009 Mexican Osram catalog that proves the existence of F40T10/D fluorescent tubes in Mexico:
