Julia and Spencer’s art styles mesh so well together. It’s so pretty.
Watching Spencer draw like that makes me realise that it's actually possible for real human beings to do it. Not that Spencer qualifies, but there's a process to it. It's not just a magic thing that happens when certain people do art.
I totally get that... it's so weird to watch an animation fully knowing the name and face of the one (1!!!) person who made it

Karina said she could hear an apple before she saw it in her mind and then Julia dropped her phone. My first reaction was, "that's not the sound i would hear when i imagine an apple."

Ya know, I always listen to the intro at the beginning of vods but like, sometimes I just have to take a step back to appreciate how actually amazingly well produced it is. This track is genuinely fire.

@recurvestickerdragon I kind of really like the 1.5 version now as it's own thing. It's like anime battle music as the protagonist gets self confidence.
I have hyperfantasia too. As a kid, any time I was riding in a car, I would project Sonic the Hedgehog or Pokemon characters running alongside the car and jumping on the buildings and trees.
Oh my god, I used to do that too! I thought I was the only one!
Guess it says a lot about me that I was imagining the Ringwraiths on horseback rather than Sonic. I think I didn't even know about Sonic until I was nearly adult.
Watching this stream helped give a name to what my partner experiences!

Same! Mine was a lion who was also my imaginary friend. As I got older a dragon joined him.
I don't "see" the apple so much as seeing the IDEA of the apple.
I see its density, rigidity, and inertia, with bounding boxes and a stippling of color samples
If I focus very hard, I see how the apple works in the composition, as well as the small textures sometimes, but nothing in between

I also have hyperphantasia and prophantasia, I didn’t realize until now that even among people who could see the apple, there’s a smaller group who can see the apple in the room with you. I can imagine the apple in its own plane of existence as well as in the room. I hadn’t realized that it’s apparently rare.
I was having such a bad day and then I saw tears magically appear on Freddy Fazbear and it made me laugh so hard that I too started crying. I needed that, thank you so much. 😂

I don't know where exactly on the (a)phantasia scale I land. I can only vaguely form mental images, and I can vaguely mentally project them in front of me, but they're not stable images. When I try to imagine the apple, it's basically a constantly shifting amalgamation of every apple I've ever seen all at once. I've never been very good with coming up with wholly original concepts for anything, and I guess the way I imagine stuff is just an extension of that.

kinda true, my aphantasia is usually just my voice saying "you know what an apple is, idiot"
Is this how I learn that I have hyperphantasia? Also is there an equivalent for other senses? Because yeah I can "project" the apple, but I can also _feel_ it in my hand, _smell_ it, _taste_ it (flavour and texture) etc etc. In all probability it is merely a mixture of good sensorial memory and the ability to use that information to "recreate" the combined sensations into a "projected" apple. Perception is a pretty feckin' insteresting object-of-study.
Just to clarify: It's not just apples. It is thankfully not an apple-exclusive ability. That'd be pretty boring.
New superpower just dropped, I got bitten by a radioactive apple and can now conjure an illusion of one only I can interact with

My ability to visualize 'the apple' is not always the same all the time. Maybe its because of my ADHD, and my varying levels of active memory. Sometimes it can be as bad as an outline, sometimes it can be hyperfantasia levels.
okay yes this !! i realized while i was talking about it that i can visualize extremely clearly when im not trying, like when im reading or daydreaming, i can basically watch movies in my head, but when i consciously try to visualize its very unclear and simple. i also have adhd, not really sure if that contributes to it but i related and its something our experiences had in common lol
Anyone know what it means to be able to picture an apple but only be able to hold it for half a second before your silly brain decides it's time to move on?

I can vaguely see the apple but not in real space and if I concentrate on any part the rest goes away. I can rotate it in my head though, and I can rotate any object in my head, especially if I’m looking at it.
Episode idea: each artist draws an overlapping component of the drawing (figure, effects, background) either simultaneously or by passing it along to the next artist with no context
because I'm always curious when i watch the VODs! The hint Karina gave about rotating a blorbo in a different way is a reference to today's episode! Four Artists Redraw Their Favorite Anime Screencaps (hopefully i got the title right 😅)

Never knew bout hyperfantasia I'll have to look into that, as for aphantasia it's both an interesting and frustrating thing once you realize that everyone else in the world doesn't operate in the dark room you do. Its annoying as an actor/writer as a lot of method encourages you an emotional specificity about the space a character inhabits, and almost all playwrighting exercise guides utilize automatic drawing/writing of your minds eye to build tangential connections / identify possible allegorical imagery.
That all aside it is legit amazing the caliber of art you make Karina, wholestop. It is even wilder to think you turn out such rad art without the assist of internal visualizing. It shows in your construction and anatomy that you whole assed learned how muscles and bones interplay to make up the human body to the point you don't need visualization to know what bulges, creases, and shapes need to go where to get the form your aiming for. It's rad. You're rad.

RubberRoss is another artist on TH-cam with aphantasia. Hearing his story of how he realized his brain was wired differently than most people he knew was my first time learning aphantasia exists.
Also, apparently some people don't hear their inner monologues or hear words they read in their head. That straight up sounds alien to me.

If I try really hard I can imagine the apple on a place in my surroundings. But It’s like what I see is clipping between my reality of the things I see and my ability to imagine a thing being in that place I see. It’s weird. It’s like the worst strength projection ever.

Absolutely wild to me that Karina not only doesn’t have AR vision, but also can’t even picture the apple? Like I thought that was an artist thing!
I have to know now… does she not see anything in her head when she reads? Did she not have a little guy running alongside the car as a kid? Or an imaginary friend of any kind?
You’d be surprised, my brother-in-law’s brother also has aphantasia (all three of us have it), and he’s also an excellent artist. I’m more of a writer, so I’m not sure how he does it, but I tend to be very descriptive in my writings (I think because I feel I need a lot more info to set the scene) so I can see where that would be how he operates, too.
As someone with aphantasia, I can say that I can’t picture anything when reading or having things described to me. It’s all more of a feeling and a generic concept than anything.
I also didn’t have an imaginary friend. I didn’t find out that other people could see images in their mind’s eye until I was in my late 30s, so it kinda blew my mind that people actually had imaginary friends. Much like with most other visual representations in movies, I thought that was just visual shorthand to convey the internal structure of thought, not what people actually saw.

As someone with non-psychotic and non-delusional visual and auditory hallucinations I find it enlightening to hear that everybody can to some degree manifest non-existent objects in their vision or inner eye.
When it comes to picturing things in my imagination, my mind is basically AI, yes I can picture let say a "purple castle" but it doesn't make much sense, some parts of it are probably breaking laws on physics, im not sure how many windows it has, i don't know the details of the door unless I actively try to imagine them. That was the one cool thing about AI images, I could finally compare it to something when explaining it to my friend.

I wonder if aphantasia while difficult at first, once overcome, can help an artist as they're forced to focus on the logical shape of things without preconception of the appearance of an object getting in the way.

Speaking of Hyperphantasia, there is actually a spectrum:
Phantasia is what most people have, which is normal imaginary vision
Aphantasia is having no imagination at all aka can't picture anything in your head (Which can also lead to never being able to easily remember faces or in an artists' case-can struggle with portraits or drawing from memory)
Then there's the in betweens:
Hypophantasia (Which I have) Is similar to Aphantasia but you can picture very little or the picture is low quality/simple
And then of course Hyper is having a vivid imagination that can reach far past the typical imaginary process.
For the longest time, I struggled with my Hypophantasia because I didn't know I had it, so I couldn't picture things often and if I did, it looked straight up like an old low poly game lol
