For a first reaction, you should start with the studio version. This version is catering to the die-hard fans in the audience that know this song well.
Thanks for reacting to Twenty One Pilots. I’m kinda glad they left you a bit confused, with more questions than answers. I think that means you need to see more Twenty One Pilots! Their live shows are amazing! Yes it’s just two guys. The drummer plays drums and trumpet. The singer plays bass guitar, guitar, piano, ukulele and a few other random instruments, he also writes all the lyrics and music, and produces the studio versions. They created their own backing tracks for the concerts and they have never hid this. The singer doesn’t need a trampoline to make those jumps -it’s his basketball background. They definitely use a mix of genres, between songs and within songs; all their songs sound different, yet sound like Twenty One Pilots. The concert production is actually amazing but you aren't seeing it in this song, so your rating is fair for what you got here. For recent concerts (2021-2022) they added a 4-piece touring band for some songs. The drummer brings a lot of energy with his drums too, but the video didn’t capture him for you. At Twenty One Pilots shows, the fans are a part of the show. Yes, years ago I only wanted to hear the artist live- I didn't want to hear the fans. But these shows are different. We take our turn to sing. It's not just about being there and listening to the artist, it's about the experience and being part of it. You have to experience it. I watched the whole video and you earned my like! I like your style too, so I’ll subscribe and check out more of what you bring, and hopefully that will include more Twenty One Pilots.
Hey David, was introduced to 21P by my son. I'm with you on hip-hop, but something abt them drew me in a bit. I don't like every song, but I've found several I like. Trees is tops on my list. Very fair score and analysis, I've only seen one or two live performances, but Tyler brings the energy for sure. Hope you can do another one in the future. Maybe someone can recommend a good live version of Trees.
Also their crowd interaction is great. Josh has a drum island he plays on while the fans hold him up. Tyler crowd surfs, stands n the crowd and so on. Also if you watch TREES LIVE at the fox theater you will see their concert ending. Both playing drums while fans hold them up.
Sometimes it's really just better for a first experience with a song to be the studio version. Unless it's really an AMAZING performance that has something special going on, the studio version really is better to convey the intended sound. Especially when there is a music video. It's a shame because it can turn people away from otherwise good music.
Agreed. This performance was very low energy. Which is not normal. I felt like Tyler may have been not feeling so well or something bothered him. There are better versions out there.
They blend a lot of different genres together - they are very diverse - Tyler plays multiple instruments, writes and produces all the music and Josh is on the drums There are only two of them so they do play different instruments but also obviously can't play them all at once in a live performance - Tyler plays a lot of piano in a lot of their songs They put on the best concerts I've ever been to They also have a backstory behind all their music that the fans will understand- you'll have people in the comments who don't understand their music and have only heard their hits
Love TOP. Went to 2 of their concerts with my daughter. The best concerts I have ever attended. I am 60 and have seen a lot of concerts. It is hard to define their genre.
I'm also 60 and have seen them several times with my young adult daughters. I agree that they put on one of the best concert experiences that I have ever been to.
Get ready for the Cliqueue to show up... Their live shows are awesome. This was not the best recording or song to be the first introduction to them. Trees is one of the best songs live. Just him and the drummer - yes.
@Love 2 Chiefs Tyler is an AMAZING MUSICIAN, SINGER, WRITER. He's this generations McCartney. The alternative duo has had two singles in the top five on the Hot 100, which is a very rare feat. According to Billboard, only two other rock acts in history have managed to place a pair of singles in the top five on the Hot 100 in the same week: Elvis Presley and The Beatles.
@Love 2 Chiefs Tyler is this generations equivalent to McCartney. 21 Pilots has the fan base and record sales. He connects with the young people just as the Beatles did. I'm 60 years old.
Tyler Joseph is a genious. Their music is kinda rap, kinda,Hip Hop, kinda Pop, Kinda Soul. He has amazing vocal range, plays bass and keyboards, and guitar. The Drummer is great. There is only two of them. Tyler has an alterego he calls Blurryface. That was part of this, song. My names,Blurry face and i care what you think. Until you understand what he is about you can have some headscratching moments. If you watch more, dont freak out when he wears the Ski Mask. That is Blurryface. Car Radio is a deep song but one of my,favorites. You get to see some great crowd interaction. Im personally not a rap or hiphop fan but i have the entire 21 pilots music library and ive listened to it multiple times. A really good one to come back on to get a better understanding and experiance 21 pilots is the live version of Trees!!
I’m the same.. I credit linkin park for my first real appreciation to rap, and now Tyler when he does. I’m not really into other rappers..but I’m kinda liking Ren lately
Yeah, this wasn't the greatest version to first experience TOP. The official vid is much better. As others mentioned, probably better to do the official vids before diving into the lives until you get a feel for them. That said, yes, it's really just 2 guys. They write all of their music and their energy live is great. Trust the recommendations in the comments, we won't steer you wrong. And as for the genre, they are genre-less. They blend rock, rap, hip-hop, edm, ukulele, screamo, really just make their own lane. If you do more, I would suggest Car Radio, Holding Onto You, and Migraine. Then you'll get a good feel for who they are. Super talented duo. Well worth the journey. |-/
Tyler(the vocalist) and Josh(drummer) have created their own style of music, they are generally referred to as pop but they also have elements of hip hop, different styles of rock, reggae, and I would say 80s pop specifically as well. This isn't the best introduction for them cuz they didn't get into the actual song until about a minute into the video and obviously you hadn't heard the original song before. You're right that this song has a lot of commercial appeal cuz it was all over the radio when the Blurryface album came out. I saw them live last year and they do have backing musicians(guitarist, bassist, trumpet player and I'm not sure what other instruments) but the vocalist/rapper Tyler Joseph is multi-talented cuz he taught himself to play guitar and, as you saw in this video, he plays bass but he also plays: ukulele, piano, tambourine, and I'm sure other various instruments. Both Tyler and Josh seem to be heavily involved in the production of their music as well if you check out their MTV Unplugged performance. I'm honestly surprised that they were requested to you cuz a big part of the appeal with TOP is their lyrics and message cuz they are huge as far as mental health awareness and their music videos have a lot of easter eggs and lore behind them. Tyler and Josh both leave the stage several times to go out into the crowd during their live shows and they go out together when they close shows with the song Trees.
This is a very popular song I grew up listening too. Deffently one of the top songs of the 2010s. This band has made some very good songs. To me I believe it is mash of rock, pop, and hip hop. The music videos are deffently iconic. I believe this song is a slightly lower tempo compared to the studio version. I don't know too much about the this band sadly, then knowing they are very famous and have some very great songs throughout the years. Hope you enjoy more songs from them.
Yeah, this song is kinda pop rock & hip hop all together but in a way that's not exactly a fusion. Hard to explain, but a lot of people like it. This song was HUGE just after it came out. Not quite sure they wouldn't hire a couple of backing musicians to fill out a whole band or at least have a DJ on stage that the lead singer could interact with. Knowing it's just these two guys and not seeing anybody else on stage, I'm impressed with how good actually turned out though.
This is a 2 man band but I’ve seen recently they’ve kinda expanded a little bit from what I’ve seen. They also kinda bridge into all sorts of genre’s. Some would say they are genreless.
Hey, I’m new here. To answer your questions, yes just 2 guys, Tyler Joseph the singer and josh dun on the drums. And now.. what genre are they? They really have their own. Some songs are more rock, some more hip hop, some more reggae..it’s really a wide mix ..hope you check out more. Subscribing

I say jump feet first into the rabbit hole that is discovering T0P you won't be disappointed as what they are well they have no style they are everything mixed together literally they're amazing
Used to really like these. Vessel (their first album) is a wonderful album that got me through some hard times. Blurryface was their huge album that went global. Since then, they’ve been very meh in my opinion. Saw them live though, smaller stage at a festival (2016). They were great live
Dave...21Pilots is truly unique and different. Its weird...total conflict w ur mind...one part of urself really doesnt want to like it but in the end...they r pretty damn good.
Not the best performance. They don't have a set genre. Based in rock but has lots of other influences. It's just Tyler on vocals, bass, piano and guitar. Josh on the drums. Please please please give them another chance. Maybe do an actual video. I know it's very hard to get them uploaded. Stressed out is their biggest hit. My least favorite song from them. My favorite is either Lane boy, fake you out or message man. Heathens was done for suicide squad.
Man... I love this song. But in a live performance, at least sing the chorus ONCE! He let the crowd sing it (that's fine) a few times, but the last chorus, it sounded like playback of a young child singing. I don't get it

The original version has Tyler singing "What's my name??..." In this live performance, Tyler sings "What's YOUR name?" And the crowd sings "MY name's Blurryface, and I care what you think", shifting Blurryface to the fans.
@@voldsoy8072 I appreciate your reply. I admit I was being too critical. I just really like that song and was hoping to hear the musicality of the song more, but I am sure they've played it a few different ways in the past. I'll have check out some more performances. Any recommendations? The best example I can give of a band not playing their song "properly" for my tastes, is when 30 Seconds To Mars played "The Kill" acoustically. The disappointment I felt then was intense, haha. This performance just reminded me of that, I guess.
@We want The Cup All of the Fox theater live performances are fantastic. I also highly recommend the stripped down Live Room recordings (older) which are very raw and emotional.

Neither The Beatles, Elvis, or Michael ever had an album where every track went GOLD. 21 PILOTS has done it TWICE. ✌
