Got to this video late. This is perfection like Prince. Like Steely Dan, it didn't matter how brilliant of a musician you were. There was a sound Prince wanted and he kicked your butt until you got it or you were gone. As for Steely Dan, you played and they said and simple yes or no. This was the world's introduction to Kirsten Scott-Thomas. She is awesome. Great Work! To be continued...

@Tony I thought it was a horrible movie and it was horrible because Prince wanted to do EVERYTHING and control everybody. I am a huge Prince fan, but that was a horrible movie. Spike Lee or someone who could shoot tragic-comedy should have done it with very little input from Prince. I am so glad he followed this with a great film, the concert film for Sign of the Times which was amazing!

I have a hard time thinking Prince who had a Dad who played Jazz did not know other music besides Sly Stone, James Brown, current top 40. I have always taken issue with that because even a regular person like me in 2021 knows of other genres and jazz, blues, gospel, rock, classical so I have always taken issue with that - Prince was a musician so I never buy that. I also don't buy the story of Prince and the engagement- he gave the ring, He placated her I think to make things a little more peaceful for his band and other endeavors. The more I hear these stories - the more I believe that. Thank you for this video. I can't wait for the next one!

I didn't know Susanna said Wendy and and Lisa turned him on to Joni Mitchell. That's funny because he talked about her being an influence as far back as the 1999 era. Joni even commented about recognizing him in the crowd (by his eyes) at one of her Minneapolis shows in the 70's. We can never minimize his collaborators nor their contributions but sometimes certain key figures keep their hands in the cookie jar a little too long.

I disagree, he made them. Warner brothers took the times without listening to them under Prince recommendation. He wrote their music. Morris Day can’t sing that well and Prince wrote for Morris tone level, singular. Whatever Morris wrote didn’t hit. And Morris was on coke like Vanity. To be honest I feel music Time was better when Prince sang them. There are always problems when you work with friends as always jealously and higher expectations in $.. If prince use James Brown’s band leadership as an example as you know james brown was brutal. I think they ALL changed. From prince ideas and fame they all gained a name.. He probably felt ganged up on and expected them to be as hard-working as him.. prince made a comment that he knew what his people, friends were saying but he didn’t go back to defend himself. Some people don’t do that leads to more chaos. I don’t think will watch this podcast anymore. It’s the same shit they’ve been talking about in every podcast. That’s how you make your money isn’t it. I’m done

I imagine Prince was inspired buy Casablanca more then Citizen Cane for UTCM... but no doubt he loved them both... and many from that era and earlier.
UTCM really has that classic feel of the early Noir and comedy films with a touch of 80's. A true masterpiece IMO.. and a film that should have done better at the Box Office. I guess it was another example of how he was ahead of his time.

@Tony I like Claire Fischer’s orchestration and Eric Leeds horn arrangements. I think the collaborative efforts brought out the best in Prince. I’m aware that he thought that he didn’t have enough material for Parade. Considering that Dream Factory, Camille and Crystal Ball were written the same year, he did have enough material. Just not in time for the movie deadline. Around the World in a Day is ok, but most of it sounds like Purple Rain B-sides. Parade is fresh and original. At least to my ears.

Just now seeing this and I gotta say @Sinnik22 you outdid yourself here! Bravo! Just like Charles Mingus, Steve Jobs, Miles Davis, James Brown, Picasso and many brilliant, genius level creators, Prince could be a cold blooded MF. I think the “nice” Prince resurfaced in the late 1990s and seemed to flourish in the 2000s when he started to control his music. It’s all so why he seemed to be mending so many fences when he knew his time was coming. Thanks for the insight and the corroboration via audio quotes. Just a thought……..You know……….if he had really married Susannah imagine how much would have changed? A legit family might have saved his life.

PRINCE, Morris Day, Sheila E, Eric Leeds, BROWNMARK, Wendy and Lisa, St.Paul, and everyone else involved in this musical period of Prince's career, were ALL brilliant and talented!

UTCM is one of my favorite movies and as time goes on I think it will be appreciated . I always felt it was in the shadow of what preceded it- Purple Rain. *sigh* more Susannah. Prince really had sides to him. It always fascinated me how he kept his women kept. I am sure Jill has stories to tell. Prince was human- a genius amongst us. Prince had a lot on his shoulders. Prince had sides and I think Jill summed it up best, he had a professional relationship and personal ones. Prince did what he had to do to be able to do what he had to do. I get it. Jill also said he had white people for aesthetics. I enjoyed Jerome, liked that Jerome said they needed a director who could "get" their comedy. Jerome makes it seem as if being in France was fun with Prince. It was interesting some said he was mean at that time. Anybody know why? Hmmm . . . . he made sure Susannah was not the lead of UTCM, and gave her a ring to squash the hard feelings😂 Gotta love it , left her home while he enjoyed Paris with Jerome. No words. Thanks for the vid. Prince was special. He was a genius. He was still human. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

I told Princez Friend, dat I wished Prince wuz mo nterested n pushing his Rock & Roll &/or New Wave side, rather than 2 git n2 da Rap arena. I think da SO CALLED white criticz were rite on 2 countz:
#1. Prince started rejecting electronicz, n favor of great musicianz & real nstrumentz. Only problem? Sounded like a Hyatt Regency/Ramada Inn lounge.
#2. Prince wuz da trendsetter n da 70z & 80z. He wuz a BIG part of da Minneapolis sound & many actz, like Da DeBargez, Ready 4 da World, etc., followed his lead. During da 90z, n2 da early 2000z, it seemed Prince wuz playin Ketchup, wit Rapperz
      SMH
Keeping da electronicz & making da NPG a neo-Gothic/Hard Rock/Electronic project, woulda kept Prince, way mo nteresting, 4 my taste.

First and foremost, your videos are on point! seriously!
Now let me say this... and forgive me if I offend.. but Prince was an ass... I can understand to a point that he had a LOT of things going on with the movie, the Family and the upcoming tour BUT still no one deserves to get their ass handed to them like he was doing. Little do you know that the seeds for the breakup of the Revolution was 4thcoming. You could see it in the air. Then the way he attempted to stall Morris career was beyond petty... And the situation with the group the Family was awful like the Time 2.0 all over again. How do you expect someone who is in a group that you created and had one show ( mind you) to cool their heels while you're off to make a movie... like you, they had to make money too! I don't blame St. Paul! As for Wendy's sister, he used that marriage as a ploy to keep her in check and close to him! And the way he had treated her about her role in the movie was f----ked up! The same thing with JJ. He kept stringing her along with premise of her album that she was around like she did! The only way to go is down! I'm looking to next video!

@@Sinnik22 There was his magnetism, the strong emotional bond that they had formed with him, and the hope that he had changed.
I think it was Jimmy that said that Prince could have had everybody under that Paisley Park umbrella. They were all growing and developing under his teaching. Paisley Park could have been the Motown of Minneapolis.
When Wendy and Lisa had grown up into composers, which is ultimately what Wendy and Lisa became; composing musical scores/soundtracks for television shows (and even won at least one Emmy) Prince could have become their producer and given them a record deal. Instead, he squashed them and became their armchair producer, criticizing their work because it wasn't how he would have done it.
He would grow people for his purposes and get rid of them when they developed a backbone, realizing their talent and worth. Morris, Jimmy, Terry, Lisa, Wendy, Jerome, Dez, Andre, Brownmark, St. Paul, Jill Jones, Susan Rogers, Patty McCreary . . . . . Prince was not into validating people for their talent and hard work. Right here in this episode, Susan Rogers said, "He cared more about the work we were doing than the people as individuals.' This really smacks of the attitude of a slaveholder, doesn't it?? Somehow to him, it seemed that validating others took away from who he was and what he did. How twisted and irrational is that?? How Ironic!!!

So 🤷 who is telling the truth and what to believe. Morris mentions in his memoir that Prince loved Joni but
