We went a week without water after a hurricane. Have been through several hurricanes never lost water before. It was miserable. We had just enough drinking water stored but not enough to flush the toilet. It was a nightmare. 5 people, unable to flush. Started collecting water from mud puddles so we could flush. Bad memories, and of course no electricity in the middle of summer in Florida. It felt like hell on earth. 1 week without water, 2 weeks without electricity.
In Florida as well during storms no power for over 3 weeks and have wells with multiple animals, had collection barrels for water and had hand dug a pool, just before the storm-- had just enough to last flushing toilets and for bathing, drinking, cooking, washing clothes out… it’s goes fast! Excellent video

One more important thing for true Christians. We say grace to thank God for His provision but also to pray for His protection of what you are putting in your body. Mark 16"if we drink any deadly thing it will not harm us". Stand on the Word which is Jesus.
I have kept water in one gallon wine bottles for years. I was told you had to change the water every six months, but Jim just said we don't have to. Good to know. Also, I found tonight that Dick's Sporting Goods store have seven gallon water containers for storing water, $20 each. I love this video because I'm learning how to get ready for that big earthquake California is going to have someday. Thank you Jim.
I found the plastic inside a wine box can be reused. Clean with vinegar and keep it handy to gather water. The spigot comes out, just with 2 pliers, gently pull it out. For those on a budget. I've had one in my backpack gear & also have filled with h20 and freeze it and fits perfectly in a ice cooler. Also, for anyone driving in the heat, it can be frozen & lye flat. and put behind a car seat cover.😁. Keeps u cool for many hours.
Famous saying, "DIG THE WELL BEFORE YOU'RE THIRSTY." A decade ago, before I retired from the army, I told my family I will buy an acreage with its own well when I retire. I now live on 3.5 acres with an independent well. It has a filtration system. In addition, I could further sanitize it if needed. I am relieved that I do not need to depend on any municipal system. I need to further build a multi- hundred-gallon collection system. Having 3.5 acres is a blessing. I have the opportunity to set out multiple barrels to collect the rainwater. I can have a large supply of bleach or tablets depending on container size. There is always a method to store water.
A simple tip....here where i live they sell wine and fruit juices is 3 and 5 liter boxes...inside this box is a bladder with a dispensing tap ..the tap can be pulled out to wash the bladder and refill it with water...these boxes are disposed and are a free rescource for short to medium term storage...it folds up really small and easily fits into a big out bag..i have two in my bag...that gives me the capacity to collect and store over two gallons...i suggest you all collect a few
Great information. I have a zero pitcher--actually two. When it is time to change the filter, I put the old filter in a pitcher and the new filter in another pitcher. I fill the pitcher with the new filter with water from the pitcher with the old filter. In this way the water that come out of the old pitcher is still filtered way above what comes out of the faucet and my filters last twice as long. Once it is time to change the filter in the new pitcher, I put it in the old pitcher, throw away the old filter, put a new filter in the new pitcher and continue on. This is a multilayer system just with two pitchers.
I also chill the water in the refrigerator first, before I run it through the zero water filters - because of the fishy smell that can be associated with those filters. I've had a much longer life span with this method. 💦
I was thinking of saving & using the old filter this way too or save for crisis situations as a pre-filter. Glad to hear someone else had the same idea😊
I read that if you take the old filter out & place outside in sunshine, you can get more use out of it as a filter. The last filter I bought for my Zero Water, had a strong Clorox taste to the water. I have no idea why but, I had to remove it - couldn’t take the taste/smell
A lot of times once you crack that spicket on the bottom of a water heater it will not shut off completely it'll drip due to settlement getting on the rubber seal so before you ever think about opening it run to your hardware store and buy yourself a cap you can screw on
Been a master plumber for yrs. Your inlet on a water heater is 3/4 ", the outlet at the bottom of the tank is a cheap, NON AMERICAN MADE VALVE and made out of plastic??? SO, when I put a water heater in my families house, I take the bleed valve out and replace it with a 3/4" copper/ brass nipple with a threaded 3/4" FULL PORT VALVE and then a 3/4" threaded adaptor to a hose bin. If I have a problem of any kind with the water heater. I have a full 3/4 inlet to a 3/4 outlet. NO RESTICTIONS, NONE. Cost is less than $50.. Also. The valve never locks up with hard water. And if you flush your water heater every 3/6 months, your garrenteed the pressure coming in is the same going out! No restrictions.. And if you need water, you can get it out. Also I have my WH about a foot higher that the floor. This way you can fill a bottle or a pan. I also have a 55 gallon barrel I catch rain water in and when it's full it just over flows. That's about 33 toilet flush if you have a 1.6 toilet. Good luck, PREY FOR AMERICA.. AMEN.. LOVE YOU ALL........
This guy is amazing! I was a Asst Scoutmaster and know several things, but most of his points I had not even thought about. The water in your water heater... 40 gallons. I guess if I got thirsty enough, it would occur to me. Lol.
Great video thank you! I’m from the UK, I have 50 litres stored in my under stairs cupboard. I did this after our tap water in half our town got contaminated, and we didn’t have water for 2 days. The councils advice was to boil it before drinking, but I didn’t want my family touching it. At the time I drove to a friends house who’s water was clean and filled 20ltr water camping container. Anyway, just a little lesson that even minor disturbances to our services, can cause a headache if we’ve not thought ahead :) I plan to add to the 50ltrs, but I know that’ll be fine for us for a few days.
I invested in Water Bricks. They hold about 3 gallons and are stackable. Unlike the large 55 gallon containers that you can't move once filled, I can place these on my kitchen countertop. They have a spigot option available for easy pouring. In an emergency, I can load up the bed of my truck with them if I have to leave quickly, and they can also be stored in my chest freezers to extend the time the freezers stay cold in a power outage.
Great information - thank you! We've stored bottled water for drinking and filled other containers for hygiene water. We don't use dairy/milk jugs. Also bought a WaterBob which is a water storage bladder that unfolds in a bathtub and has hose to fill from spigot and a pump to get the water out as needed. I think it is 100-gallon capacity. We have a Berkey we use daily. We have coffee filters for pre-filtering and Potable Aqua Water Purification Tablets for purifying water if it's not tap water. We do have a box of water test strips to test the tap water but have not done so yet. Also have some LifeStraws. Would like to set up a rain catchment system but have not so far. Stored water will eventually run out and carrying water from the river is not doable for us. Also, I think rainwater would be easier to purify. We have Steramine Quaternary Sanitizing Tablets for sanitizing food contact surfaces as they last a long time and bleach does not.
@@verygrateful007can't wash them well enough to use again. You can put water in them for flushing toilets or washing. Put a few drops of bleach in when you fill them.
though you can't stack them - the black and yellow totes will work for non-potable water too - for a quick fill! pool shock chemicals will help as well. Jim provides a lot of great information to supplement your guidance!
I have a deep well with a 1 hp pump, on my property, and an 80 gallon pressure tank. Next, I have a large concrete water tank with a sand filter on it. I’m not sure but I think it is 1000 or 1500 gals. I also have a stream across the road in front of my house and have a way to boil that water on an open fire outside. I even have access to plenty of firewood to use for this as well. Then, last but not least, I have a berky filter with the capability of filtering 12,000 gallons.
I just learned that distillation doesn’t reduce pesticides in water. Most boil at a lower temperature than water. Just boiling might be more effective against pesticides.
Jim Phillips, a great wealth of knowledge, such a terrific person to team up with for your channel and surely be friends with. Thank you for this very important video Jim, Jonathan and Kylene. Knowledge is power. Happy trails!
IM GRATEFUL FOR THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION, I HAVE WELL WATER WITH SOMETHINGS FOR PURIFICATION. I ALSO INVESTED IN AN EPIC WATER FILTER WITH NANO FILTRATION. ALSO PRESSURE CANNING WATER MAY ALSO HELP.😊
If you have enough off grid power to run your A/C, you can collect 2qt to 2 gallons a day on the condensate line depending on humidity levels. In the desert this will work during monsoon season. (Not in May/June when RH is down to 2-10%). Must treat it before use.
If you have electric and a dehumidifier it will make you water right in your home or put it outdoors to run it. Disinfect the machine before you run it and I would still boil it before I drank it.
Fantastic video!. I have knowledge and experience regarding potable water, and I learned some good stuff from Jim. Water is the most important prep, that many preppers do not have as #1. If nothing else hopefully the vid will make you think. Thanks guys.
Most people don't think about water because it's always been available and people just can't believe that it cold be disrupted. I hope it will bet people thinking also.
@SafeHarborAlliance I think about it often. It is one of my biggest worries. I just don't know what to do . I'm alone , in the city, on city water and cant have a well.
Hi Safe Harbor, me too. Space is limited. I lived in NYC for many years when I didn't think about prepping until 9/11 and the long summer week+ blackout the following year or two. I store 1 gallon bottles (not in the opaque milk jug type plastic bottles, but rather in the clear sturdier bottles) on the floor of a closet in neat rows. It put some cardboard over and put our shoes on top. I have 20 gallons in closets for two of us. Not nearly enough, but just to get beyond the chaos. You can also keep a bathtub water bladder handy, not very expensive, if you have some warning, like a storm, and they hold up to 100 gal of potable water. I hope those suggestions help.
I use filters understanding that it only filters solids down to the few microns rated on the filter. Contaminated water needs further processing to make it relatively safe.
I bought a distiller and am starting to store in glass bottles. I have thoughts on how to preserve...ie backcountry hiking trick of chlorine dioxide... thanks for Jim's information.
Added bonus in draining some water from your water heater monthly is it will run more efficiently and it can extend the life of the water heater. 👍👍 The sequence of treating the water is critical! Jonathan PLEASE correct me if I’m wrong here: Prefilter 2nd Prefilter Heat treatment Chemical treatment Fine filter treatment (I.e. Berkey Filter)
Maybe if there is an aquafer under the ground you could digg down until you get water, then boil it and strain it through a couple of clean t shirts. Or collect rain water if that's possible.
Awesome video as always. The key point for me was to remind me that it's always better to use two methods in series eg filter AND boil. I keep calcium hypochlorite and some candle-filters. But I've learned that I need to improve on how I would pre-filter contaminated water.
we have city water but also have a well and even replaced the pump our self when it failed and can run pump off generator and if pump fails I will pull it and drop a slender bucket down the hole and pull it out ..it is 210ft
I store my water that I get at the town surface well up north in the mountains in Lanaudière Qc Canada. In 18L blue plastic bottles and I add 6 millimeters of 1.5% Hydrogen Peroxide in it and empty by rotation and date filled in my Berkey system and the water is great...
@@SafeHarborAlliance the problem lies with people within the group. The vast majority are there to be nice, because they know me. About 12 out of 64 people watch any of the videos I post. Less than that I'm afraid are actually doing anything. The only one I know actively preparing is my mom and step dad. They're in their 70's and on it. I'm 55. My generation sadly, didn't spend enough time listening to our grandparents. I did. I had lots of fun in life still do. Part of that is preparing now. My wife and I are raising our grandson who has a disability. Our daughter passed away almost a year ago. Our goals are to give him the best life possible. Which means working on his disability, so he can be self sufficient. To the best of his ability. My grandson is a joy, and joyful. He's special. He touches people by being in their presents. I don't worry too much in the. Warmer months because i have many 55 gallon rain barrels. We also have many 5 gallon jugs, but it gets too cold toleave them full in winter. How do you store for winter where storage indoors 8 s limited. Snow melted?
THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video, and for the additional learning resources info! This video answered some of my burning/ puzzling questions!! Very helpful, vital info!! Thank You! Question though: I've heard it said that if you open and smell an older bottle of chlorine bleach, if it still smells like bleach, its still okay, to use for sterilizing drinking water, etc. How true? sure of a thing is that though? You'd think that the germ-killing potency of the bleach would be gradually dropping-off. Is there another way to test if the potency of the bleach is strong enough to sanitize drinking water? Maybe some swimming pool test strips of some sort? What "number" or level of chlorine would I be looking for, in the tested water (in preparation for drinking) then? ("Regular", liquid chlorine bleach is getting to be hard to find!! I DID take you tip on getting some pool shock though!) Thank You!!
'flushing' your hot-water heater/tanks the way Jim suggests at 10:00 does NOT work, they are designed to prevent debris being disturbed and distributed throughout the pipework; all you will do is waste water. But he is right that you should check ALL taps/valves at least once a year.
This is one of the best vids I’ve seen. It’s kinda scary, though. There’s so much too it. So a berkey will just clog? How do I pre filter it again? I’ve got to go to some of those sites he owns!
In addition to mechanically pre-filtering any water as best you can before running it through the Berkey, I was instructed to use a green scrubby pad (aka Scotch pads) to clean the surface of the filter elements and then rinse the scrubbed filters with clean water on a regular basis. 'Regular basis' depends on how heavily used your filters are, I guess.
The Berky is a good filter, but it is important to get the water as clear as possible. It will filter murky water but the filter will plug up sooner. The more cloudy or muddy the water the sooner it will plug. There are a few simple basic things you can do with dirty water if you don't have a good set of prefilters. 1) Put the water in a container (bucket or such) and let is set undisturbed for hours, over night or longer, for particulate to settle out. 2) Skim off any floaters and use the water from above the stuff that settled out. 3) Mechanically filter it through as many layer as needed of coffee filter, paper towels, bath towels, etc. as needed to get the water to look clear.
Can you store water in 100 gallon rain barrels and then filter it through a Berkey if there was ever a crisis? Amazon has the 100 gallon foldable ones for $20 bucks. I was going to purchase 5 of them and store them in my shed after filling them.
Once we calculated how much water we would need for a month, we realized it would be difficult to store that much water. We wanted a month of water for two people and two pets. We decided that we would need 60 gallons. (We only have 18 gallons stored now.) 60 gallons are difficult to storage and handle. Our temperature varies from 103 to 0, sometimes less than zero. A 55 gallon drum would not work for us. We discovered and order a WaterBob for storage of water. It is a plastic liner for a bath tub. It can store up to 100 gallons. It includes a pump to dispense the water. We plan to use if there was a major water issue. Of course that would meant we would have to have a few hours notice a head of time. The item has given us peace of mind.
I called the water Bob company. They said it's only good for 6 to 8 weeks of storage time. I too thought it was a sigh of relief when I got mine. So you have to have multiple ones so that you can extend the time of having water by changing out the water Bob. In addition I asked the owner what would be the best thing to put in the water of the water Bob to keep it safe from developing anything toxic and he said that chlorine dioxide kits would be the best thing to use inside the water Bob hope this helps
55 gallon food grade barrels. Can commonly found on Offer Up, Craig's List, etc. For about 3 $30.00. Clean them out with 1 cup of bleach, 5 gallons of water, cap, roll around for a few mins. Rinse, put in place, fill with tap water (all the way) cap, then you are good for a few years.
What I want to know is what do I do with my four 55 gallon water barrels that I have around my home in the winter? I’m in Michigan and these will freeze to a block of ice. I can empty and bring in the house and put in basement and refill, but……any other ideas??
We have very hard water so we have a water softener. I didn’t think about it at the time and used the softened water with some of the ‘water storage’ drops. Since Jim said he stores hard water with no drops, I’m thinking I need to empty the containers and start over? What do y’all think?
I'm confused. At one point in the video Mr. Phillips says that at 160 degrees, 10 minutes at a rolling boil kills everything. I know I missed something. Can someone help?
A Ranger told me that three drops of Clorox in a gallen of water will make any water pottable. Is that correct ? What do I do if I did this in (original) plastic water bottles ?
Hi. I’ve been thinking about buying a hand pump for my well (Bison). Has anyone used or experienced these? I know about the price and I’m not concerned.
When I was a little girl , our water pipes were frozen. My mother got snow and let it melt for the toilet. We had power, so she boiled some for us to drink. ,
Excellent video! I learned a lot and am going to check out Jim's Way. I do have a question about removing chemicals (herbicides, pesticides, gasoline or diesel, etc) from water. Is this even possible? I am asking because the nearest creek to my house is most likely contaminated from agricultural and street runoff.
The good news is that most of the common chemical contamination can be removed by activated carbon filters, carbon block is better than a filter filled with carbon granuals.
He meant 55 gallons. Food grade plastic barrels are $15 used. 350 gallon totes are $60 used. Water can be sterilized with ozone generators and UV "C" light. An old fashioned pitcher pump can be bolted to the kitchen counter to overhang the kitchen sink. The 350 gallon totes can be positioned in the basement to feed the pitcher pump. Until you have assembled a water system, you are not prepared.

Also, most bad guys are stupid and lazy. Getting anything out of a ranch takes a lot of long term work that is not appealing to them.
I have great security and surveillance systems. Longhorn cattle and chickens are work.

All my ranching neighbors are armed.
I’m older and slower now but I can still hit a 3” target at 40 yards.

In Florida as well during storms no power for over 3 weeks and have wells with multiple animals, had collection barrels for water and had hand dug a pool, just before the storm--
had just enough to last flushing toilets and for bathing, drinking, cooking, washing clothes out… it’s goes fast! Excellent video

Assuming you survive the quake!!!
Jim recently passed away, according to his website. Thoughts and prayers for his family.
I do the same
Doesn't the filter take out the electrolytes? That's why i stopped using mine.
I am so impressed with this video. This is an example of what kids should be learning. I will be going to your site. Thank you so much
I have canned water in glass jars- It is good always for long time
A lot of times once you crack that spicket on the bottom of a water heater it will not shut off completely it'll drip due to settlement getting on the rubber seal so before you ever think about opening it run to your hardware store and buy yourself a cap you can screw on
Good advice

Thank you, I always thought you could put any garden hose on drain of water heater. I'll see about getting this fixed.
Thank all three of you for sharing . 👍🏻🇬🇧💛🤍
This guy is amazing! I was a Asst Scoutmaster and know several things, but most of his points I had not even thought about. The water in your water heater... 40 gallons. I guess if I got thirsty enough, it would occur to me. Lol.

What about using silver in one of the stages of the water filtration system? The 1800s used a silver coin in their water kegs.
In the 1800s people died from dysentery all the time.
Anyway, just a little lesson that even minor disturbances to our services, can cause a headache if we’ve not thought ahead :)
I plan to add to the 50ltrs, but I know that’ll be fine for us for a few days.

I’m gonna nerd a lot of coffee filters. I was just thinking of making coffee, but when you add in for filtering…wowzer…
We have Steramine Quaternary Sanitizing Tablets for sanitizing food contact surfaces as they last a long time and bleach does not.
may I ask why do you not use milk jugs?
@@verygrateful007can't wash them well enough to use again. You can put water in them for flushing toilets or washing. Put a few drops of bleach in when you fill them.
What do you use if not plastic jugs. Otherwise good info
though you can't stack them - the black and yellow totes will work for non-potable water too - for a quick fill! pool shock chemicals will help as well. Jim provides a lot of great information to supplement your guidance!
You have to be “very careful” with pool shock.
Never ever take short cut use the toilet (white chunks blocks) to clean toilets!!
Pool shock can be dangerous you have robbery very careful and know what your doing.

On the concrete water tanks do you have water hauled in
@@brendagratza6210 No ma’am, I fill it from my well.
I just learned that distillation doesn’t reduce pesticides in water. Most boil at a lower temperature than water. Just boiling might be more effective against pesticides.

Thanks for the information 👍
No problem 👍
Store water in 3 200ft deep wells and then we use a Berkley filter. Thanks 😊
Y'all are so cute. Couple goals!!! 👏🏻💖
I’ve been told putting a bit of salt in your water will provide the electrolytes needed.
Himalayan salt will provide electrolytes and minerals. Definitely something everyone should stock up on.
Himalayan salt and Celtic salt.
I love this!
Thanks for all your great advice. Where can I buy 10, 5 and .2 micron filters to purify my pond water? I had no success on FEMAs website.
Added bonus in draining some water from your water heater monthly is it will run more efficiently and it can extend the life of the water heater. 👍👍
The sequence of treating the water is critical!
Jonathan PLEASE correct me if I’m wrong here:
Prefilter
2nd Prefilter
Heat treatment
Chemical treatment
Fine filter treatment (I.e. Berkey Filter)
Maybe if there is an aquafer under the ground you could digg down until you get water, then boil it and strain it through a couple of clean t shirts. Or collect rain water if that's possible.

If when you first put in a water heater replace the drain valve with a full port ball valve.
Awesome video as always.
The key point for me was to remind me that it's always better to use two methods in series eg filter AND boil.
I keep calcium hypochlorite and some candle-filters. But I've learned that I need to improve on how I would pre-filter contaminated water.
Pre-filter: cloth, like a t-shirt. Cheap paper coffee filters work well also. 💦

Just found this video. So boiling say, lake water for the time mentioned and temperature mentioned will make the water safe to drink?
No answers here so far. Hopefully, they are just backed up.
Boiling will kill viruses but not chemical contamination.
@@SafeHarborAlliance I’m gonna buy some coffee filters!

Can you store water in 100 gallon rain barrels and then filter it through a Berkey if there was ever a crisis? Amazon has the 100 gallon foldable ones for $20 bucks. I was going to purchase 5 of them and store them in my shed after filling them.
That’s a good question. I’d like to know also
Once we calculated how much water we would need for a month, we realized it would be difficult to store that much water.

If your basement is heated at all then you should be good. The problem would be if the power goes out for a long period of time and then they freeze
We have very hard water so we have a water softener. I didn’t think about it at the time and used the softened water with some of the ‘water storage’ drops. Since Jim said he stores hard water with no drops, I’m thinking I need to empty the containers and start over? What do y’all think?

Excellent video! I learned a lot and am going to check out Jim's Way. I do have a question about removing chemicals (herbicides, pesticides, gasoline or diesel, etc) from water. Is this even possible? I am asking because the nearest creek to my house is most likely contaminated from agricultural and street runoff.
The good news is that most of the common chemical contamination can be removed by activated carbon filters, carbon block is better than a filter filled with carbon granuals.
@@SafeHarborAlliance I'll second a good activated carbon filter. I'd start with a homemade one and go from there.
Man! 55 gallons per person! That’s soooo much to store!
I can’t afford the barrels
I believe he said 5 gallons as in FIVE not 55
He meant 55 gallons.
