I never though in a million years we would have to worry about having enough food in the Unites States. But the last 2 years have really opened my eyes. I have just begun my long term storage journey. I was wondering how we would get fresh water. I just ordered the Calcium Hypochlorite that solves one of my problems. Thanks so much for all the information.

I agree - her video on that opened my eyes too - we have a pool on our property and buy shock every year... I am sure what we buy isn't qualified for water purification but I surely am going to buy several bags of what RoseRed says to buy - and shock for our pool is very expensive so expect what you buy to purifiy your water is expensive too... but that bag I think will go a long way compaired to me putting it in my 7000 gallon pool.

I am in Black Mountain NC next to the worst of the hurricane and I can tell you after Sandy and Katrina I learned to have not 3, not 7, but 14-30 days of water and supplies because it will take FEMA up to a week just to get to you and even longer for supplies. The other things you are not mentioning is drinking or potable water (which is what you are talking about) and GRAY water or NPO non potable water. You drink and cook with Potable water and maybe do laundry. HOWEVER you can use gray water (waste from laundry or washing dishes etc) for flushing the toilet. I have two separate sets of containers, one set potable, the other NPO. I do not mix them up.

Great video, as always! Many in the "prepper" community recognize that if people are going to be highly active, then 3 gallons minimum per person, per day is what you want to plan to have. Much of that is going to be for drinking, but then you also have washing yourself and cooking. Some even plan for 5 gallons per day. Obviously the elderly and the very young will not use so much, but do we want to put our eggs in that basket? Also, the person may not be able to participate in group washing and cooking activities, so do we really want to PLAN on them being able to do it? I think that too many fail to address recycling the water we would use in that situation and we need to be practicing that NOW because trying to learn it then is not the time. Just things for each person to think about for their own situation.
Awesome job letting people know about pool shock, Pam! Simply fantastic!

When my mom was teaching me to pressure can back in '62 (I'm old) she taught me to pressure can water, because it was a good way to learn to pressure can without risking wasting food if the jars didn't seal. We also store water in the freezer, which along with blankets to fill voids in the freezer, helps keep food frozen for days.
Why have water storage? One need only STOP and think about how much water one uses daily to see how valuable water is. Hope for the best, plan for the worst. Thankfully around here most folks have solar well houses or old-fashioned Amish style hand water pumps on their back porches.

Rose! I wanted to bring to your attention when I clicked on the calcium hypochlorite link to Amazon I noticed the packaging was different and upon looking at the active ingredient it lists "other" as well. I see it does have algae killer in it so I thought perhaps they linked a new version of TKO to the old description. They don't realize an "improved" version would be something we can't use. I could be wrong, but I wanted to bring to your attention.

Thank you for all of your wonderful videos! I love all of the scientific information given with each lesson on Preserving good and water. I do, however, have a question that has been weighing heavily on me. If and when something should happen to where you need to use these things. How can people preserve foods without electricity to help keep a good flowing pantry. If it's just a few days that would be one thing but if something were to happen longer term, what are some preserving methods that don't require electricity for meats, veggies, fruits, etc.? I feel it's important to still try to replace what has been used, being that you will be eating through your food stock in a matter of time. Could you do some videos on preserving methods that do not require electricity? I hope I didn't miss some videos where you already have, and if you have, could someone direct me to those videos? Thank you sincerely for all your posts and all the info you gave us. Love your videos ❤

Just wanted to add that besides the 5 gallon stackable water tanks, storing mason jars of water in every nook and cranny, a package of pool shock, Life straws, a Berkey (yes, there's a lot of debate about their filters, but I would choose using the filters over dehydration), using tarps/or kiddie pools (hard plastic or blowup) to catch rainwater, a katadyn water filter, there is also the option of digging a shallow well. There are some good youtube videos of how to do it and the supplies needed. We have the supplies ready and the pipes have been cleaned in case it ever came to this. I also printed out the instructions with video screenshots and have them in my prep binder.

Great info! I was wondering about having to treat our city water for storing. It is processed via reverse osmosis, but they add chlorine. So it should be safe to store... though I still filter it before drinking it.
I use a lot of white vinegar by the gallon, which come in thick containers, perfect for storing water. I also use the heavy gallon Arizona Tea containers for water. Both of these are quite sturdy. I have also bought some prebottled water, both distilled, as well as, drinking water. CLEAR CONTAINERS MUST BE STORED AWAY FROM SUNLIGHT. Light will create algae inside and degrade thin plastic.
We have a store in town that sells delicious reverse osmosis water, plus you can buy brand new containers. Many grocery stores have water for sale to fill your own containers, too, but I only buy reverse osmosis or vapor distilled for drinking.

Im with you Joan..any large containers that food comes in I save them and all those fizzy water drinks, those are washed around the rim and left to dry in the garage with the lids too. I will be filling my two bathtubs and an overlooked place for water is in our hot water heaters. I also have been saving a lot of paper, (plenty of that in our mailboxes everyday lol), used Kleenex (yes you read that right..used Kleenex), dryer lint, paper containers like what my coconut milk and regular come in, and boxes. My garage is filled with boxes. Anything I can use to get the firewood started with, I save it. Plus I know I have much more paper in my file cabinet. If I need kindling...its time to clean out my file cabinet. lol

We clean our barrels with fresh Clorox. We use RV hoses to fill our barrels because they are the cleanest. We add a water purification solution to the water stored in the barrels which extends the shelf life to 5 years. We will be changing out this summer and watering our plants. Honestly, our water is a six-month supply for four people, a cat, and two dogs. We factored in water for our freeze-dried foods. We also have handheld water purification. Find any corner in the house or garage for a 55-gallon container, fill it up and use it to set things on, like freeze-dried food. I agree water is number one on the planning list.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is the best video that I have seen regarding water storage. Very explicit, detailed, organized, etc. For anyone concerned about ingesting minute amounts of bleach, I think of all the swimming I did growing up and occasionally and accidentally gulping chlorinated water with no ill effect.

We live in the country and when I store water I also use containers for flushing toilets as well. Our tank takes about 2 gallons so we also prepare for this as well. During a winter ice storm it is not unusual for us to be out of power for up to a month so it's great to have. I do love the idea of using canning jars for water storage until use. How clever!!

Water is the weak link in my preps due to lack of storage space - Along with the little water storage I have, I also have very good portable water filters which I can take to a few local water sources and fill up containers -
I know of folks that have a well and in case of power outage as a back up they also have a manual water pump just like granny had -

We live in Southern CA & the tap water is not great at all. All the people I know only use it for bathing, gardening, cleaning & some cooking. No one drinks it. I rotate 6, 5gal water jugs for drinking & cooking. So I always have at least one full jug of water on hand, but usually more. My problem is space & money. I don't have much of either. Mostly bcz we are saving to move in a few months. When we get to the heartland. I plan to setup a rain water catchment system with a natural filtration system. Activated charcoal, pebbles, river stones, & clean sand. I figure if I can't keep long-term water storage for a grid down scenario. I need to create a way to basically produce our own water. Do you have any thoughts on this kind of system? Also, we're moving to a area that on average gets 44" of rain & has tons of public surface water available. So there's an abundance of water.

There is a company called "Simple Pumps" which sets your well up with a modern hand pump for a grid down, pump water by hand without Electricity. Can be used in your well along side your electric pump. good alternative those who have personal wells.

We live outside a major metropolitan area not prone to any natural disasters. A number of years ago there was a widespread power outage. We were not affected but our town gets water from the large city and their pumps were down. We have water towers but once they were empty that was it. So a water shortage can hit anywhere. In addition to our potable water we also have a stash of 'improperly' stored water-not sanitized and in old soda bottles that you're not supposed to reuse. I wouldn't drink it, but it's fine for flushing and in a pinch I'd water the veg with it. So be creative and use what you have on hand. Not all water is for drinking and you can use any old clean container for toilet water, just label it. That way you can use the better containers for drinking water and you have plenty on hand for other uses.

Diane, I have a similar system. I reuse juice containers for my water intended to be potable, and Tidy Cat litter jugs for water intended for other purposes. I also use the Tidy Cat buckets (after cleaning) to store my vacuum sealed food. They are actually food safe plastic. I'm kicking myself for getting rid of so many before getting that idea.

Nope, not going to use my water for flushing the toilet. I lift the seat and line it with these really thick bags I have and it gets taken out to the trash once a day. You can add some cat litter if you want in the bag to assist with absorption and smell. Yep..thick plastic bags and cat litter will take care of the..well you know. I have done this lots of times and it works, great when camping too. I have learned so much over the years from folks that are Nomads. They know how to manage power, food and storage and of course manage water usage. They are experts as many of them have been doing these things for many years. TH-cam has thousands of videos on Nomadic living and off grid living. Some prepping videos age great too. I do really suggest to have some portable power using solar panels with battery storage like a Jackery or a bluetti. The bigger the unit the more you will have to keep things going that are essential like any medical devices or even a refrigerator. Learned it all on TH-cam.
