    Most people will tell you be happy and grateful, someone has it worse than you. You are taught to be okay no matter what you're going through.
    But our need to meet a standard for a happy life is biological. Even the brain understand there are things to avoid and things to gain. You cant be okay with physical abuse because you have it better than someone who has severe physical abuse. Your brain will want to avoid and its normal and survival.

    Avoidance is also the avoid-dance because your dancing around what your trying to avoid. Also when you avoid certain things what you create is a-void.

    12:20 This graph showing Reward/Approach and Threat/Avoidance looks a lot like Marc Brackett's graph he calls the mood meter. He works with SEL, social emotional learning. His graph uses the four quadrants so people can take more specific notice of their own (and other people's) emotions. The vertical scale shows how much energy we feel, from very charged and excited to very calm or lethargic or sleepy. The horizontal scale shows pleasantness, with unpleasant being on the left and pleasant on the right. People of all ages can plot their emotions at any given moment on the chart, then decide how to act, instead of just reacting to feelings their environment stimulates in them. So people can be more proactive with how they react to different situations and even plan for recurring ones. Something like this can be immediately effective to stop violent outbursts in children and to encourage people to pursue longer range goals that can't be achieved in short amounts of time.

    I remember someone telling me he worked with computer software, that when he asked his boss for a raise, his boss said he can't bring himself to paying someone so young more money. So he quit and started his own business and made that extra money. And the company he left had to hire three people to replace him. That opens a lot of questions: how do we get more performance from others (or ourselves)? How do we convince our boss to pay us more so we don't need to go out on our own? Or was this the organic nature of economics playing itself out?

    Following a solid few years of partying I am a lot more deadpan, low arousal that I used to be (I’ve never been high) but I’m extremely flat, with anhedonia and fairly regular bouts of depression-like symptoms.
    Please, if someone smarter than I has any suggestion for some meds I can take to fix this…life is unbearable

      That does not sound fun. Do you get enough good sleep, exercise and a relatively healthy diet? Do you have close friends that you can open your heart to? If you dont then I would suggest focussing on getting that in order instead of focussing on your thoughts and feelings.... Because you are not your thoughts and feeling, you are the one experiencing those thoughts and feelings.

    this kind of research would profit a lot from interaction with psychics, and the replication prerequisite (through Lab tests) would still be satisfied. But while we do not refrain from using computers, which use chips most probably re engineered from CPUs retrieved from alien space crafts, in our research, the regular human dismisses this type of assistance (through psychics) showing that the main purpose of these Psychology faculties (and other faculties, no unilateral accusation intended) is not assisting others (for example those who for some reason lack of selfmotivation) in an effective and quick manner. They are making dog (Pavlov 1890) and mice tests for over a century now and they still know almost nothing of the brain.

      +KnockandWatch "interaction with psychics"
      If there are real psychics, why have none of them claimed the Randi prize? Not even one person has, and several have tried.
      "the regular human dismisses this type of assistance"
      Perhaps because there are no psychics who can prove their gift is real under lab conditions? If there were, people might be less inclined to discount them.
      Certainly, if their main purpose is in assisting others, it would be a valuable proof of concept to recruit others.
      And yet, there are none who can prove their gift under lab conditions.
      I wonder why that is?

    To dismiss the history of neurobiology as "basic common sense," as if it could just be somehow inferred, is astonishing.

  • @fishisnotfishfish2267
    @fishisnotfishfish2267 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Still cant understand why they dont build AI more Inspired off the brain, unless they are starting to change thier approach. Neural net works are inspired off of the brain, In 2015 - 2016 started to take off, so seems like nature Is trying to give people that build AI, a hint that's a pretty reasonable Avenue to peruse. The approach matters. But idk if in 2021 researchers have enough use data to inspire some more designs In AI. But whatever I got my own stuff to focus on. Elong musk Is a funny guy lol good luck with them predictions 😒🥱🤦‍♂️

  • @bluedistortions
    @bluedistortions 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm still waiting. Here, I'll go first. She said animal experiments weren't necessary for neurobiology. I said that is non-sense. You said I misunderstood her objection. I asked how. You repeated, once again, that I was wrong, but neglected to explain how. I suspect you're just upset that someone would defend the necessity of animal experiments, but you haven't made any arguments either way, you just say I'm "wrong" and "misunderstanding" over and over without any explanation at all.

    Since nowadays economists occupy themselves with the Studies about Happiness (versus psychologists) , the International studies about the Happiness in different countries are really a joke. The questions are (example)" 1) are you satisfied with your financial security? 2) do you feel safe ? 3) can you participate in a democratic process? and so on. What part of the brain is firing here? Probably none. This kind of study is about the satisfaction of the ego, and not about the dopamine-relasing-fall-in-love-state....which is "happiness" .

    Her lecture would have more weight if she was an actual physician. So her credentials mitigate the validity of her claims. However, she is quite interesting, albeit boring.

    • @manthasagittarius1
      @manthasagittarius1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Why? A physician may also be a clinical researcher, but there is nothing to suggest that a patient treatment caseload places a physician in a superior position scientifically. They are two very different ways of gathering and interpreting information. Also -- how is it you find someone "interesting, albeit boring"? Bit of a direct contradiction in terms, isn't it?

    • @smokinghorsey9
      @smokinghorsey9 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Since when is the claim of a physician worth more than a professor of psychology when talking about the brain? Credentials aren't the important thing anyway. Either the argument seems logical and the evidence seems robust or it doesn't.
