Hi all! The limited edition print sale goes on until 21st of September: art.alluringarctic.com (have a look, getting one is also a great way to support the channel!) We're on the last stretches of the Northwest Passage and currently trying to get further south to escape the incoming winter! Live tracking here: www.alluringarctic.com/tracking Instagram/Facebook for live updates: instagram.com/alluringarctic facebook.com/alluringarctic Thanks again for watching!
This is now my faovorite sailboat... so cool! However, I don't think that you ever mention the exact model number for your Engine and the HP specs and normal cruising speed under engine power. Could you let us know please as it seems just about perfect.
It's wildly fun, if you're ever able to get into it it's worth it! Both a sport and a comforting activity, headed these guys sense, a job too! It truly is a jack of all trades experience, carpentry, electricianship, mechanic ship, metalworking, quite a balance between fun and work, but it's a lifestyle for sure
Thanks for the tech tour! As an engineer, I can really appreciate the robust redundancy and safety features that you have added to you boat. Looks like a nice balance between functionality, maintainability and simplicity. Well done!
You did tell everyone that you wouldn’t be doing many videos during the northwest passage, and that’s very understandable! I can’t imagine even attempting that trip in a sailboat, not sure I’d do it in anything but a true polar explorer vessel, so I have huge respect for you on this trip! An aluminum sailboat and titanium balls… no other way to describe it! 🤣 Of all the “living on our sailboat” TH-camrs, you guys have to be the closest to that being reality and FULL time… you obviously truly live and work on this boat and you’ve created every system to accommodate that… some professionally designed and some MacGyver’ed to work the way you need them to! Looking forward to you wintering in Greenland and seeing videos of the passage and whatever you do in Greenland. Will you be looking for rubies and gold, or just good slopes to ski on?? 😂 Awesome video as always. Cheers from 🇨🇦 🤠👍🏼☮️
From my experience, barometric dampers primary function is to prevent excessive draw up the flue, which can lift the flame off the burner. Then secondarily to prevent any backdraft into the interior space. If your chimney isn’t pulling hard, you just don’t need it. So covering it over as you’ve done makes good sense. Your overall attention to detail is first class, and your successful navigation of the Northwest Passage is the best proof of that! Congratulations to you and your whole crew!
Juho you and Sohvi are two of the most capable if perhaps underrated sailors on TH-cam. Kudos to all the thinking behind the systems of your purpose built machine.
I've been watching your progress through the passage on the tracking page and wanted to share my congratulations on your successful arrival in Greenland! You did it! I've sailed for many years, and your seamanship and very capable integration of tides, sea state, and winds, is evident. Thank you for sharing, and your continued outstanding video work!
Juho, your philosophy of design and cruising seems to me to emphasize simplicity, redundancy, safety while still having some fun! Thankyou so much for sharing your inspirations😊
Have been watching your progress on the tracking page and it demonstrates the longest journey starts with one step, and that applies so much more with arctic sailing when you are doing it six knots at a time. Comparing your journey to the explorers on big wooden ships who didn't survive with the Inuit living and traveling by kayak and umiak who have lived well for thousands of years, and now being impacted by the big freighters and luxury passenger ships who have invaded their waters. Have two brothers who have lived in Alaska for many years, and who went on a hunting trip to Kaktovik, and listened to their stories that were made more real by yours. Hope to have my own adventures soon, and have been learning by your experiences. Thank you for sharing. Remarkable accomplishment.
Saturday evening, Tally Ho published a 34(+) min video, and then you guys with a 36(+) min video, it just can't be any better Are you going to stay the winter in Grønland? Plenty of skiing trips then and some scientific work as well? Stay safe, enjoy life Wago connectors are p'fect, som vaseline or di-electric spray and they won't corrode You have clearly the right experience for sailig in harsh (arctic) area, I truly enjoy following you guys
I have to say, I thought it was unusual to have some of the systems in your living area but now I realize how important these systems are on a sailboat. I live in a house and take our systems for granted. Thank you for sharing this journey with us 😊
Thanks for the great tech tour Juho, It's so good to see a boatowner that knows and can maintain every system on his vessel, especially important as you have chosen to cruise in some of the widlest and sparsely populated regions on earth.
I love all the redundancy you built into the systems. Which I've always been a big believer in redundancy for personal safety and function of ship systems at sea. Since you have to rely on what's on your own vessel to get you back to Port safely. It really just boils down to Common Sense
Juho, you remind me of my Swede airplane pilot instructor. Once flying out of Arizona in high altitude density we were barely stalling the airplane on take off..I was freaking out but he was calm as a cucumber. We were swimming the fences and trees and he's like please just calm down please. Dude, can you have at least some emotion in the face of danger. I'm glad he didn't. Later I found out he was a renound rally race driver navigator. Love your channel guys yiu make it look easy.
Wow, fascinating ! Comprehensive, always a back up system & plan B, but all achieved in the simplest & most reliable way. Super accessible too, which I love. Perhaps not the most aesthetic appearance, but the aesthetics are all around you outside & you need absolute practicality. I just hope both of you know exactly how to use & maintain everything, just in case. Thank you, lessons to be learnt for all of us !
Juho, I am very impressed with your bespoke systems on your boat. You are pretty clever and your systems reflect that. I love your attitude with through hulls, the bane of any sailor.
Juho, we support you and Sophie, this is another epic example of your on going gracious attitude and genuine sailing ability. Fantastic and we are all very grateful. Can't wait for future episode's showing the passage to Greenland.
Hope that when you get to read this comment that all is well and you're healthy and in good spirits. I looked at your tracker and see you have made it to East, Congratulations!!!
Hi Juho, I found your channel 3 weeks ago and now I'm nearly up to date :-). It is a great channel, the quality of your videos is exceptional! And I have the utmost respect for what you both do (arctic sailing and skiing; the quality and thoughtfulness of your boat work and living as a couple in such a small and isolated "home"). Please keep it up! I'm very exited to dive in the Northwest Passage videos. There is on small thing so. I think you already aware but you never talked about it: You use the swinging centerboard as a backup depth measure. Never do it in reverse! Better even, try to never backup with centerboard down. We just had a boat in with a swinging centerboard which hit a rock in reverse (I'm a boat builder). There was quite a lot of damage! And especially with your pin positioned inside the hull there is quite a risk. As I said, I think that you are aware of this but just to be sure ;-) Greetings to Greenland!
I am in the process of rebuilding my own 44 footer for long distance cruising. Like the way the boat is rigged up for quick and easy access to "everything that will go wrong" ( just a matter of time ) I also rigs my boat with easy access and dual system sources for when "when shit hits the fan". You are exciting and educational to follow, keep up the good work. Greetings from Northern Norway
Bought a print for my father. The one looking out the window. Looking forward to videos of the passage. Also looking forward to updates on overwintering in Greenland. Where will you guys be overwintering?
I'm building my boat and not yet on electrical yet. I know exactly why you need double pole . Somehow though i never thought about it considering the boat. Main problem I have with single pole switches is led floodlights staying kindof. But as stray currents in the boat that would be unforgiving. I'm sooo frkng glad i watched this video.
@ewauvwas DC is a loop between the poles of the battery. Complications here are going to be with introduced current e.g. from the AC system. DC ground planes are a fascinating subject for electronics designers and will be the cause of most or all problems. In this case maybe look really hard at galvanic isolation for shore power and keep your ground exposure e.g. through the engine block minimal.
Anyway! Let's look at the stove!!! 😁 I was so disappointed when your first update after the passage was a technical walk-around on your boat. But, I love it! Keep it coming. And I'm looking forward to seeing the whole story from your adventures ❤
Hi Juho! Just wanted to say thank you for making these beautiful videos. I'm going through a very hard time in life right now and they really help me handle my anxiety.
Great info on your set up, watching your videos as you worked on most of those components separately in the past, this really helps tie it all together and how everything works together on the boat
I totally agree with you regarding the through hulls (I mean holes 🤣 ) in the boat, regarding the shower I have seen a design where the shower and toilet are inside the wheel house and at sea the drains are above sea level with a valve for the tank to be used in port etc. that boat also has watertight bulkheads around the rudder shaft etc, it also used the big diesel heater
I only understood about a third of this video ! Until you said MacGyver and I saw some parachute cord and a lever and it all made sense. Thank you. Safe travels.
I appreciate the tour of your systems and their functions the deisel fuel system is great I like the drum siphon set up and the fuel polishing systems and you can monitor it all while doing everyday chores
The transducer is interesting. It must be in the water to work. On plastic boats the transducer can be inside a water filled box that is inside the boat. The bottom of the box is the solid not foam core fiberglass hull.
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge and adventures... I know you're super busy, but if you can show your rudder packing set up I'd be interested in the design. Regards!!
A funny personal story: I was really looking forward to your next video ( this video ), but I was in the wrong place at the wrong time tonight, and was not observing my surroundings properly and I got myself in a legal predicament where it looked like I was doing something illegal. After about an hour, the police let me go, and I came home and took and shower and turned on TH-cam and got back to my normal monotonous humdrum life.
My Husband and myself are not sailors and don't understand the information about sailing but have to hand it to you,you make it sound very interesting, have watched you and Sophie from the start of your channel and look forward to many more episodes, Best Wishes from UK
I really love your approach i did the same on mine by simply installing an AGM emergency battery bank that can be used as service batteries if my LifePO fails or as Engine starter/ Anchor Windlass power if my engine starter battery fails 👍🏻
Thank You for the comment section, Quote: " We're currently on the last stretches of sailing from Alaska to Greenland! " that is good to know. I know the ice would open up a way for you at some point; but it's still nerve racking thinking of how one big piece of floating ice could so drastically alter the outcome. take your time now....it's just a week to ice minimum.
What has your experience been? I know that doing it means a boost converter and a separate router plus you either have to fiddle with the cable or buy a bit of hardware. The win here is seemingly based on not needing an inverter for any other load e.g. an AC fridge. Once you fire up that inverter for some other reason your gains get much more questionable

I sail
I have done solar

One of my favorite sayings - "When you are prepared, it never happens"
I would trust this boat fitted the way you have it more than a brand new boat

That NW passage series will be epic, I`m sure. What an adventure!
Thanks for the great tech tour Juho, It's so good to see a boatowner that knows and can maintain every system on his vessel, especially important as you have chosen to cruise in some of the widlest and sparsely populated regions on earth.
Glad you've gotten enough sleep now that you're in Greenland to be able to edit. Thanks for another great video, Juho.
Thank you so much for this detailed video, amazing work you have done. Love your work and I’m so glad to have found you. 👍👍
Can't wait for the northwest passage series. Great video, your boat is a beast!

Total boat nerd episode 😊 Great 🤟

34:35 hugely rewarding as well i’m sure … more happy adventures to you and your companions
Nice review of your proven boat installation. I like the safety features

Wago makes nice water-repellent gel boxes that go around their connectors to make them waterproof.
You have done a great job refitted your sailboat, very impressive.
You set up is well thought out for your needs. Interesting to watch.

I've been tracking you guys, well done on your passage. Lumi is an amazing boat, you two should be very proud
Congratulations for the success through the Northwest passage.
I see on AIS you made it!
Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Looking forward for the documentary of your NW passage
Hope you both are safe and well and continuing successfully on your voyage. Fair winds.

I loved those waterproof compartments for the sensors. Of course.
Excellent explanation of your systems. You are a very knowledgeable man.
Great video with interesting details, Juho.
Thanks for that.
Well done guys congrats on safe trip and arrival in Greenland look forward to the videos later cheers from Australia
Bought a print for my father. The one looking out the window. Looking forward to videos of the passage. Also looking forward to updates on overwintering in Greenland. Where will you guys be overwintering?
Thanks for posting this video. I see where you are on live tracking. Well done!
The elegance of simplicity in the face of myriad failure modes is awesome. Folks don't get it unless they've been there.
no idea what your talking about but its very soothing while I work on an artwork commission... look forward to the next series

You rock, brother. Keep on sailin!
technical beauty Lumi !!!
Thank you for the tech walk through. It is great to get details on your setup and your thought process.
Great technical tour, waiting for the NW passage videos, thanks !
Your set up is brilliant, yes, keep it as simple as can be!
Well done 👍. Thanks for taking the time to make and share this video. I like your style.
Juho- What do you do for fresh water? How large is your fresh water storage tank? Do you have a water maker? If not, how do you get fresh water?
I enjoyed the detailed tour. Thanks for sharing.
Anyway! Let's look at the stove!!! 😁 I was so disappointed when your first update after the passage was a technical walk-around on your boat. But, I love it! Keep it coming. And I'm looking forward to seeing the whole story from your adventures ❤

Diesel runaway... rarely though of. Genius and simple solution and good on you for thinking of it.
Never seen a boat setup but I'm hooked
-Sending warm wishes and hope of good fortune from Florida in the U.S.!
wow, Lumi is an awesome boat!
Thanks!
Great info on your set up, watching your videos as you worked on most of those components separately in the past, this really helps tie it all together and how everything works together on the boat
Thanks for giving some insight as to how you do this.. thanks for sharing!
Thanks
Thanks for the episode and the update.
Each of those icebergs seems to have such a unique personality.
Thank, great. And gonratulations for Nortwest Passage!!!!
You really know your boat.
Very fail-safe system architecture! Well designed! 👍🏻👍🏻

Outstanding video as always. Safe journey through the N. passage
Great stuff, keep up the good work.
What’s your secret to keeping white crocs clean?
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge and adventures... I know you're super busy, but if you can show your rudder packing set up I'd be interested in the design.

Alaska does have some of the most stupidly stunning scenery.
Super simple

Good explanation.
Fascinating!
In my opinion you are a extreme explorer and you’re videos should be on Tv
My Husband and myself are not sailors and don't understand the information about sailing but have to hand it to you,you make it sound very interesting, have watched you and Sophie from the start of your channel and look forward to many more episodes,

I noticed you are using the AC starlink controller…you can build a DC based system really easily so you don’t need the inverter and associated loss.
What has your experience been? I know that doing it means a boost converter and a separate router plus you either have to fiddle with the cable or buy a bit of hardware.
