The best visualization of a wider swing being shallower I have seen is placing a small circle (e.g. a frisbee) inside a large circle (e.g. a hula hoop) on the ground touching in the same place where a ball would be angled roughly in a normal swing plane. It is easy to see the angle of attack of the small circle is steeper than the wider circle.

Yeah great video that is what I have been working hard on (width) and it takes care of several things (getting on plane, stay on plane, power, and accuracy). Greg Norman has said several times that he believes width was on of his keys to consistency.

Great video. Keeping your right arm straight as long as possible helps the turn. Important to relax. It's not an easy move for less flexible/older people. Take it slow and tension-free is the key. I've been working on this and it has lowered my ball flight and gained me extra distance.
Finally i am managing to get consistent right arm width,for me i have to load/use the right elbow between 7-8 o'clock or im squeezing oranges! If like me you have loose joints and/or have been told to swing with passive arms, loading your joints of the right arm in sequence may help achieve what Milo teaches.
Always a revelation watching Milo. The coolest part is watching Brenden realized the reasoning why it works when performing it. My speed is coming back to me and my across the line at the top is getting in a better position. Moving away from desperation....LOL
If like me you are struggling with this drill, try some right hand only swings and then introduce the left hand on the club at the end of the backswing ie when left arm would be at parallel. Works for me,the reason why I struggle was being taught when i first started golf to get behind the ball whilst holding stuff under my armpits!
Milo is spot on saying that if your arms are wide you have to generate power from within. Most great golfers learnt as kids and HAD to do this.Unfortunately most of us learnt as adult males and want to smash the ball with the clubhead = collapsed right arm!
OMG now i know why when I’m hitting slow tempo swings focused on shoulder turn and getting solid shots with better than my normal distance and then try to dial it up it goes from good to worse. Great informative video.
For some an important piece of information to note in the drill is to turn your hips in sync with the arms rather than just throwing the arms out straight? Noticed both milo and Brendan do a great job loading that left foot in the transition which helps shallowing. Good stuff.
For most amateurs it is all 95% improvement when they learn how to transition pressure from trail leg into lead leg. Most of the time that will take care of the hip turn. And the pressure shift needs to be way earlier than most people think. And more rapidly.

Ryan Fox is one of the biggest hitters on the European tour, he lets his left ( lead) arm fold about 40* at the top of his back swing, & so looks similar to John Daly , works for him though.
I agree. I am not sure about this instruction on this video. The more I extend the right arm the bigger the fat chunk shot I play. This was almost the case with Brendon. Totally opposite instruction from all the Hogan info and stack and tilt...so who is correct/wrong?

I did point out to you about 3 yrs ago when you were throwing hammers on a beach! that you had a left side dominated push takeaway and narrow right arm.I have found right hip/glute like Milo describes and left chest down helped me with more right side width tho my bldy right arm still collapses ! but i restore it halfway down.

The drill I've seen for that is if you grip the club with your lead hand, then put your trail arm under your lead arm and press the back of your trail hand against the back of the lead hand and it keeps the lead arm straight.

For consistency it is definitely good but pure speed creation, I don’t think so. Longer arms, hence wider arc will give you more speed, but so does the folding of the left elbow. And also right elbow. It gives you a longer distance for the club to travel and accelerate even more. The extension off the left elbow may cause inconsistency, yes but it is a speed generator. Look at other videos of Milo where he demonstrates the similarities to baseball and he swings a baseball... both his elbows are bend way more than in golf. At impact in baseball the elbows are nearly straight, still in acceleration. You do the same when throwing a frisbee and backhand tennis. The extension of the elbows throughout the swing is a massive speed producer. In one video of Joe Miller he mentioned that he intentionally uses the left elbow as a further hinge, hence a further speed generator. What do you think?

I agree with your assessment. The idea of this video is to help those suffering from over bending trail elbow and suffering from bad impact. If you look at my driver swing my left arm bends slightly and straightens through the ball however my right elbow still only folds to 90.
Agree about left arm,I would throw a frisbee a lot further with my lead arm rather than trail arm even if it was my left! But this video is about collapsing right arm, one of my biggest faults tho i save it with good body action as i have long shallow divots.I have done a lot of right arm only swings/strikes ( mainly sponge balls) which Ive found is a great drill for extending a collapsed right arm,if only i could get it sorted on backswing.
@@grahamjones7371 in my opinion you can do both... I also think the pull with the lead arm is faster. On the other hand eg Mike Austin always claimed to throw with the rear arm. Also the collapse of the rear (right) elbow is maybe difficult to be consistent but people who use it are fast. If it is high like in a throwing position, not just a pull back of the elbow. Famous right elbow like a throw, Ryan fox, Freddy couples and John Daly... And all three are very long. And I don't think it is just luck but do see a connection. Consistency is a different topic. @@florianredecsy4997 I tried Milos drill from this video,I felt so weak and underpowered! and no feel. A collapsing right arm is the caveman part of my swing! But i have worked on all of Milos other great tips and I have improved my other sources of power and speed which is probably allowing me to recover from my collapsed right arm. I have noticed a lot of the top 20 long drive champions have a slight flip at impact but then they get 6 chances to hit it straight!

Strange how 85% of club golfers still slice despite all these free online tips. The only answer without doing a lot of coached practice is to start playing at about 6 years old. After early teens the body starts to stiffen up, difficult to learn a good swing. Of course, all these teaching pros started at 6 years old.
Milo should be the gold standard for teaching. Working out which technique is correct is tough but the answer is simple when your playing with the swing that works for you use it! Tiger and Nick Faldo both changed their swings at pinnacle of there careers, bodies change and swings change. Stick with Milo as he explains why many of the methods are used and typically which suits him and why. Your points are valid, however if you go to a range and watch the pros you will see many gimmicky gadgets being used.
Everytime I see Milo, I want to fly down and visit him. But alas, Covid, work make it prohibitive. There's got to be a in person teacher in Oregon that teaches this swing philosophy. I'm currently interviewing coaches.
PS right arm only swings with 3 different backswing lengths have had a big impact in getting my hcp down from 11-4 although it has taken me 4 frustrating years!
Interesting concept, but unless I am misconstruing Milo’s instruction, it is easier now to see why he and Mike Malaska ended up separating. The concepts seem to have veered in opposite directions with Milo’s more geared to younger, more athletic players and Mike’s to more senior players. Just my take from this side of the camera.
It is a speed producer but you want it to work like throwing. When you throw your arm never bends beyond 90*. We don’t want to prevent it from folding in reality just prevent it from folding too much
It is a matter of physics. Wider means more potential force. And more kinetic energy. Hence equals more speed. But you need to be able to apply more force into the club. Else it won’t work. That is why long drivers have a wide arc
Dude, check out overhand golf's "holy grail" swinging the club like a baseball bat downward into the ground along the plane line. I think it would take care of all these width issues and is a lot easier than all these drills and jazz imo.

Ok some feedback after trying this. I want to report that this approach forces me to use my lower body in a way I haven’t done before. Also I now understand what pros mean by a “one piece takeaway” or “staying connected throughout the swing”. After a short time doing this my upper body felt passive and it’s as if my lower body is generating that power. My shots were inconsistent BUT more often than not they were straight and powerful. I’ve tried a lot of techniques but this feels different and is generating some exciting shots.
Since you're trying to get shaft lean, shouldn't you be compressing closer to the ground with you lower/upper body in a squatting move? If you stay the same height at setup and impact you have to throw your arms to even hit the ball. If you stayed the same height and had shaft lean, you would club would miss over the ball completely

As student of Milo I’m wondering why your not attempting these drills in slow motion, maybe you edited them out? Your practice swing speed for these DRILLS should be your hitting swing speed! The thing to remember is tension kills, in my lesson we tried to separate the wrist from the arms. Golfers try to make power by extending both from the top. Just a note, keep that head of the club behind your hands that’s was my swing thought. P.S. Watch Rorys right arm on his driver swings, his extension of the right arm and the unwinding create power and accuracy. Milos right arm doesn’t extend till after contact. Good luck!
Right arm staying straight? Hmmm. Not sure about that. None of the great players went “wide-to-wider” in their swing arc. They went wide-to-narrow. Look at Hogan. Their arc went from wide-to-narrow to front load the club and create lag.
Wide to narrow is just an 2D optical illusion. If you look at most great ball strikers 3D movement you see the trail arm folds to around 90* and in Transition doesn’t narrow but begins widening. When you look at most amateur players you see trail arms that fold well past 90* . We surely don’t want the trail arm to stay straight but most fold it too much so the feeling of keeping it straight gets it to bend less.
when you ask your guests a question and then you step away for a club or go off screen it seems disrespectful and i notice some of the guests get thrown off by it. be prepared before the question and stay in place and focused on the response.

Great job as always. The best visualization of a wider swing being shallower I have seen is placing a small circle (e.g. a frisbee) inside a large circle (e.g. a hula hoop) on the ground touching in the same place where a ball would be angled roughly in a normal swing plane. It is easy to see the angle of attack of the small circle is steeper than the wider circle.

Yeah great video that is what I have been working hard on (width) and it takes care of several things (getting on plane, stay on plane, power, and accuracy). Greg Norman has said several times that he believes width was on of his keys to consistency.

Great video. Keeping your right arm straight as long as possible helps the turn. Important to relax. It's not an easy move for less flexible/older people. Take it slow and tension-free is the key. I've been working on this and it has lowered my ball flight and gained me extra distance.

Finally i am managing to get consistent right arm width,for me i have to load/use the right elbow between 7-8 o'clock or im squeezing oranges!
If like me you have loose joints and/or have been told to swing with passive arms, loading your joints of the right arm in sequence may help achieve what Milo teaches.

If like me you are struggling with this drill, try some right hand only swings and then introduce the left hand on the club at the end of the backswing ie when left arm would be at parallel. Works for me,the reason why I struggle was being taught when i first started golf to get behind the ball whilst holding stuff under my armpits!
Milo is spot on saying that if your arms are wide you have to generate power from within. Most great golfers learnt as kids and HAD to do this.Unfortunately most of us learnt as adult males and want to smash the ball with the clubhead = collapsed right arm!
OMG now i know why when I’m hitting slow tempo swings focused on shoulder turn and getting solid shots with better than my normal distance and then try to dial it up it goes from good to worse. Great informative video.

For some an important piece of information to note in the drill is to turn your hips in sync with the arms rather than just throwing the arms out straight? Noticed both milo and Brendan do a great job loading that left foot in the transition which helps shallowing. Good stuff.
For most amateurs it is all 95% improvement when they learn how to transition pressure from trail leg into lead leg. Most of the time that will take care of the hip turn. And the pressure shift needs to be way earlier than most people think. And more rapidly.

I agree. I am not sure about this instruction on this video. The more I extend the right arm the bigger the fat chunk shot I play. This was almost the case with Brendon. Totally opposite instruction from all the Hogan info and stack and tilt...so who is correct/wrong?

I did point out to you about 3 yrs ago when you were throwing hammers on a beach! that you had a left side dominated push takeaway and narrow right arm.I have found right hip/glute like Milo describes and left chest down helped me with more right side width tho my bldy right arm still collapses ! but i restore it halfway down.

The drill I've seen for that is if you grip the club with your lead hand, then put your trail arm under your lead arm and press the back of your trail hand against the back of the lead hand and it keeps the lead arm straight.

For consistency it is definitely good but pure speed creation, I don’t think so. Longer arms, hence wider arc will give you more speed, but so does the folding of the left elbow. And also right elbow. It gives you a longer distance for the club to travel and accelerate even more. The extension off the left elbow may cause inconsistency, yes but it is a speed generator. Look at other videos of Milo where he demonstrates the similarities to baseball and he swings a baseball... both his elbows are bend way more than in golf. At impact in baseball the elbows are nearly straight, still in acceleration. You do the same when throwing a frisbee and backhand tennis. The extension of the elbows throughout the swing is a massive speed producer. In one video of Joe Miller he mentioned that he intentionally uses the left elbow as a further hinge, hence a further speed generator.

I agree with your assessment. The idea of this video is to help those suffering from over bending trail elbow and suffering from bad impact. If you look at my driver swing my left arm bends slightly and straightens through the ball however my right elbow still only folds to 90.
Agree about left arm,I would throw a frisbee a lot further with my lead arm rather than trail arm even if it was my left! But this video is about collapsing right arm, one of my biggest faults tho i save it with good body action as i have long shallow divots.I have done a lot of right arm only swings/strikes ( mainly sponge balls) which Ive found is a great drill for extending a collapsed right arm,if only i could get it sorted on backswing.
@@grahamjones7371 in my opinion you can do both... I also think the pull with the lead arm is faster. On the other hand eg Mike Austin always claimed to throw with the rear arm.
Also the collapse of the rear (right) elbow is maybe difficult to be consistent but people who use it are fast. If it is high like in a throwing position, not just a pull back of the elbow.
Famous right elbow like a throw, Ryan fox, Freddy couples and John Daly... And all three are very long. And I don't think it is just luck but do see a connection. Consistency is a different topic. Have a nice evening.
@@florianredecsy4997 I tried Milos drill from this video,I felt so weak and underpowered! and no feel. A collapsing right arm is the caveman part of my swing! But i have worked on all of Milos other great tips and I have improved my other sources of power and speed which is probably allowing me to recover from my collapsed right arm. I have noticed a lot of the top 20 long drive champions have a slight flip at impact but then they get 6 chances to hit it straight!
Off to the garage to try that great drill! tho it a carpet tile on concrete so i have to be shallow!

Strange how 85% of club golfers still slice despite all these free online tips. The only answer without doing a lot of coached practice is to start playing at about 6 years old. After early teens the body starts to stiffen up, difficult to learn a good swing. Of course, all these teaching pros started at 6 years old.

Milo should be the gold standard for teaching. Working out which technique is correct is tough but the answer is simple when your playing with the swing that works for you use it! Tiger and Nick Faldo both changed their swings at pinnacle of there careers, bodies change and swings change. Stick with Milo as he explains why many of the methods are used and typically which suits him and why. Your points are valid, however if you go to a range and watch the pros you will see many gimmicky gadgets being used.
Everytime I see Milo, I want to fly down and visit him. But alas, Covid, work make it prohibitive. There's got to be a in person teacher in Oregon that teaches this swing philosophy. I'm currently interviewing coaches.

PS right arm only swings with 3 different backswing lengths have had a big impact in getting my hcp down from 11-4 although it has taken me 4 frustrating years!
Great lesson , why do you try breaking club head speed records while practising ? Why not hit slow good tempo shots and learn the feeling of impact .
Interesting concept, but unless I am misconstruing Milo’s instruction, it is easier now to see why he and Mike Malaska ended up separating. The concepts seem to have veered in opposite directions with Milo’s more geared to younger, more athletic players and Mike’s to more senior players. Just my take from this side of the camera.

It is a speed producer but you want it to work like throwing. When you throw your arm never bends beyond 90*. We don’t want to prevent it from folding in reality just prevent it from folding too much

It is a matter of physics. Wider means more potential force. And more kinetic energy. Hence equals more speed. But you need to be able to apply more force into the club. Else it won’t work. That is why long drivers have a wide arc

Dude, check out overhand golf's "holy grail" swinging the club like a baseball bat downward into the ground along the plane line. I think it would take care of all these width issues and is a lot easier than all these drills and jazz imo.

Ok some feedback after trying this. I want to report that this approach forces me to use my lower body in a way I haven’t done before. Also I now understand what pros mean by a “one piece takeaway” or “staying connected throughout the swing”. After a short time doing this my upper body felt passive and it’s as if my lower body is generating that power. My shots were inconsistent BUT more often than not they were straight and powerful. I’ve tried a lot of techniques but this feels different and is generating some exciting shots.

Since you're trying to get shaft lean, shouldn't you be compressing closer to the ground with you lower/upper body in a squatting move? If you stay the same height at setup and impact you have to throw your arms to even hit the ball. If you stayed the same height and had shaft lean, you would club would miss over the ball completely

As student of Milo I’m wondering why your not attempting these drills in slow motion, maybe you edited them out? Your practice swing speed for these DRILLS should be your hitting swing speed! The thing to remember is tension kills, in my lesson we tried to separate the wrist from the arms. Golfers try to make power by extending both from the top. Just a note, keep that head of the club behind your hands that’s was my swing thought. P.S. Watch Rorys right arm on his driver swings, his extension of the right arm and the unwinding create power and accuracy. Milos right arm doesn’t extend till after contact. Good luck!
Right arm staying straight? Hmmm. Not sure about that. None of the great players went “wide-to-wider” in their swing arc. They went wide-to-narrow. Look at Hogan. Their arc went from wide-to-narrow to front load the club and create lag.
Wide to narrow is just an 2D optical illusion. If you look at most great ball strikers 3D movement you see the trail arm folds to around 90* and in Transition doesn’t narrow but begins widening. When you look at most amateur players you see trail arms that fold well past 90* . We surely don’t want the trail arm to stay straight but most fold it too much so the feeling of keeping it straight gets it to bend less.
