There is nothing inspiring about watching someone "clean" an already clean home. Or, to watch someone who looks like they let their home be destroyed just so they would have content to film. It is refreshing to see the "real deal" with you, Sophia! I greatly appreciate the honesty! Well done!

“A lot of us come from a generation who was raised by parents who are always telling us ‘never tell anyone about the stuff that doesn’t work. Don’t talk about your failures. Don’t talk about your flaws. Don’t talk about the things that you’re not good at. Only present yourself as everything is always perfect’. What it has created is an entire generation of people who live in guilt and shame.”
Sophia, I have followed you for YEARS. Since the beginning. I’m 36 now, and was raised exactly this way. Thank you for re-mothering us ❤ I mean that as sincerely as possible. I live in a small house (under 1,000 square ft) with a sister and currently 1 dog and 1 cat. In the past we have had up to 4 cats at a time. There is always pet hair. I can dust, sweep, vacuum, and mop then turn around and there is more pet hair visible. It is never ending, but they are worth it and I would never give them up. Most everyone who visits has animals too, so they understand and if the don't, who cares, they can just deal with it or stay away. I live on a farm, so sometimes horse hair is carries in on clothes. Shoes and boots left near the back door probably have manure on them from the barn and chicken pens too. We clean, but don't obsess over trying to have a spotless house. [Honestly, I know people who mop their carport at least weekly -- definitely not happening here, life is too short, too many books waiting to be read.

Maybe since you are so handy you could build a couple of those fancy dog crates, but they look like end tables. Then you could put the dogs in the living room. Not sure how much space you have though so it may not be an option. But if you built it yourself you could customize it into whatever you want and need. Just a thought to maybe free up the space in the kitchen for your pantry.

We have the world's hairiest dog and he seems to breed tumbleweeds day and night, and keeping up with every tumbleweed collection is impossible. We are kidding ourselves if we think our homes are clinical and pristine like a lot of people on social media and video channels convey. It is unrealistic and sends out the wrong message that we are not "keeping up with the clean Joneses". You are an inspiration and thank you for sharing reality.

How about building an L-form or U-form bench underneath the windows? You will have a cozy breakfast table with many storage room underneath the bench... And really I don't think you need a bigger pantry, because the kids are growing and probably they move to their space the next years...

You have one "tower" of very narrow drawers (with your tea things in top drawer)... if possible, i would transform this tower into a "bottle and spice" drawers. Have a high drawer for bottles, and a short one for spices. It is my favourite thing in my own kitchen. Olive oil bottle (and vinegars etc) are such a pain to store without one ! Keep the face the same but change the inside of the cabinets (if possible).

It did help me get most of our tiny apartment decluttered before we moved into our house several years ago! The work counter space looks great with the dog crates next to each other underneath. Also, the drawers look so neat now and your solution to collect all the ziplock bags, parchment paper and foil etc. together in the same place near the counter where you are most likely to use them was a smart decision. Finally, I want to say thank you for normalising the fact that no home is perfect and that we are not failing if our houses aren’t spotless. Frankly, whose is most of the time, right?! I think it is essential to show younger people starting out that unrealistic expectation are a hard task master most of us can never keep up with; and that if we constantly try to meet overly high goals or expectations we will lose ourselves to frequent disappointment in the process. It is far better to be realistic and do as much as we can, when we can, without doing harm to our bodies or mental health as we do it.

But, over time - there seems to be less to declutter and the decisions become easier to make. I think we become more aware of what we bring in and our acquisition habits change. Decluttering becomes part of normal household maintenance. And, yes… I’ve got dirt. Lots of dirt. More now than ever. Life has been one big hit after another for almost a year.

First, you look real nice. Your hair looks nice. Second, we need to be honest with ourselves and admit that we all have dirt and I love that you are being honest something that a lot of us need to be. Like you said that you are just normal which most of us are. Thank you for sharing and truly enjoy watching your videos

Did you say one time about blocking off the window on your kitchen? Maybe you can make a small butler pantry there if applicable with it closed off and the peninsula thing out of the way. Always thought you made your home so pretty.

May I suggest looking into pull-out drawers that fit into existing cabinets? They are commonly made of metal, but some are made of wood. You being so handy may be able to make them as a project? Having mostly drawers below hip-hight is awesome. We just moved houses, from a kitchen I designed tofit us, to an older home with only cabinets under the counter. So I’m getting drawers for our kitchen, too😊

Your home looks great🥰 , we just have to try monthly to reset the kitchen because it is a major work area, well it is if the owner actually cooks like you do👍🏻
Those people who never cook, and only use their kitchen for a picture opportunity don’t count.
Have a blessed week Ms Sophia❤️

First of all, you are NOT a slob! You are a very busy working mother who is prioritizing her family over cleaning 😊. Also, I have read articles that indicate that people who live in absolutely clean houses are more prone to illness than those with a little bit of dirt because their immune systems never have to get exercised. Now, on to my organizing comments. Several years ago, I decided to use a deep drawer for my towels and cleaning cloths and stole them vertically. I put some spring loaded dividers in the drawer to keep the towels in place in rows. Then, I rolled the towels and stood them on end. It was a game changer! I can see every towel and was able to fit twice as much in the drawer. I use the shallow drawers to store foil, plastic, etc. I keep plastic stuff in one drawer and foil and parchment paper in the other. That way I don’t have to stack anything. Once I live with something for a while and find that I like how it’s working, then I upgrade any storage solutions to prettier ones (like bamboo dividers instead of plastic). You are doing great 🎉

I don’t think it matters how new/old your house is. Most is standard thing, I don’t think the people who design kitchen are the very people who cook in it! We bought and live in a new build house and we ripped the kitchen out to put in what would work for us. Best investment of time and money!

    • @mygreatchallenge
      @mygreatchallenge  ปีที่แล้ว

I totally agree! We should design our own kitchen based on our flow and needs. Not everyone wants a kitchen island (I would not know what to do with it).

You are absolutely correct about working with the kitchen we do have. Yoh are doing a great job. The progression you have made through the years is incredible. Also as you were chatting I thought that new pantry Idea would be nice because the current pantry would make a great other storage and appliance station. But the beloved pups!!
It worked out great! Very satisfying:)))
