Little backstory for this song: she had trouble producing it, every producer wanted it to be radio friendly, as you can see in west coast demo. Lana, however, had envisioned west coast like this, she wanted it to have more upbeat rythm in the verses and have that dreamy slow chorus - cuz that duality&contrast represented her state of mind at the moment.
The old man is the same person as her boyfriend from the born to die/blue jeans/ west coast videos. He has aged and is haunted by the thought that he killed and took his soul mate for granted. It makes much more sense in the Shades or Cool music video. Great job Job!
@@borntolose7122 her songs are very much autobiographical, she isn't playing some character she is not, so she sings about her life. Well, if music video has another meaning, then it's possible, BUT song meaning is pretty much that she doesn't wait for her Born To Die lover no more, found another(Barrie), and is focusing on her career and LA life now. Deep down she still misses her true love. "Down on the West Coast I get this feeling like It all could happen That's why I'm leaving you for the moment You for the moment boy blue Yeah you" etc...
Li Sa I am again talking about her music videos, not the actual songs. She even says in interviews (the guy always ends up killing me in my videos) this is a C H A R A C T E R ✨
There are two most popular theories: 1- The chorus happens in the future when she’s dead (in the born to die music video) and the guy is just imagining her with him and in the verses he’s just remembering his memories with her. The scene in which she’s on fire can be the guy’s fantasies about her as she died in a car accident and he saved her body out of the burning car. 2- As she says in the verses that she’s leaving the young guy alone for some time and the guy says I miss you but something keeps her from saying she will miss him too cause she’s actually gonna go to her other guy who is her sugar daddy.
so the first guy Bradley Soileau,I'm assuming, is her true love with who she lived together and about who is Video games and Born to die, Blue jeans etc. old guy is Barrie I think cause I think Shades of cool is about him, the same old guy is also in that video. I know Barrie is younger but maybe she doesn't depict all realistically but in artistic way (she did it also in Ride for instance, the guys she dated weren't actually that old:D spiritually, maybe, but not in actual age. google her boyfriend pics(Lizzy Grant); and she told that also that she did artistic take on there). When she rose to the fame she told a lot of her songs are 'always about the same damn guy', who she lived together with, was happy, pictured a future with, but sth happened and they separated, leaving her heartbroken. So she sang about how 'she would wait a million years' for him to come back in Blue Jeans, but he didn't, so she found Barrie and left that guy in spiritual sense too, not waiting for him no more, focusing more on career also, leaving true love behind. Scenes w older guy are palm trees, she's in LA now. "Down on the West Coast I get this feeling like It all could happen that's why I'm leaving you for the music You for the music it's true, it's true". When she is going under water means she goes even deeper, into heartache etc, Barrie also was fcked up guy who she couldn't change as much as she loved him, so she fell even deeper. There's also pictures in Instagram about Lana's boyfriend back then, with tatts like Bradley, who ppl assume Born To Die era is about. So this is my take. I figured this rn, I've been confused about the video since it came out:D in a sense, ppl that imply that she is already dead and a ghost haunting the other guy, are right too, cause spiritually, she IS already dead after her heartbreak.
I guess its about fame, and the verses she talks about tje west coast and the chorus about the guy she loves. The video makes the reverse, she have fun with a guy she loves on the beach, but she leaves him to get to fame in California, Hollywood in the West Coast, but she is not happy with fame like she thought it would be. She seem to be rich, well succeded, but sad in the car, because even with everything that is good and the west coast has it, the guy she loved "had the music in him"
That guy is the guy from shades of cool. But I think there is a theory that man is actually supposed to be from the born to die video, but grown older and he is haunted by lana and the car crash.🤷♀️
I think she leaves the young guy for the sugar daddy in Shades of Cool phase, she realises that he actually doesn't love her the way she thinks he loves her - she compares her time with that dude with White Mustang (pun not intended) in the West Coast phase and then decides to leave the sugar daddy and rejoin the young guy, but dies in the process - born to die. Her spirit is recalling all the moments and reminiscing about all that in form of songs.
In the scenes on the beach, she’s with the guy from Born to Die and Blue Jeans. Remember, she died in BTD, so Blue Jeans and West Coast’s beach segments can be seen as flashbacks with him. And the slow scenes during the chorus of West Coast show him older and being haunted by dead Lana, hence the scenes of her on fire and it reflecting in his eyes. When you watch Shades of Cool, it will make more sense, as she is basically haunting him, still young! That’s a really basic and terrible explanation lol. 😌
I love your description at 3:00 "...when I hear the songs, they feel to me like they're songs that I have lived with for years and years." Many people feel that too, but they normally describe it as "I feel nostalgic for something that never happened to me" or something. I've seen many people describe it this way independently of other people. I think your way of saying this feeling was not the feeling, but driving belief being the feeling, which is: " Since I feel like I've lived with these songs for years, I feel nostalgia when I listen to it." I think your comment is insightful as it articulates the emotion more effectively than just letting people know the emotion you feel. Thanks for your content, Jon!
Just in case this hasn't already been communicated, Shades of Cool has two MVs both of which are absolutely stunning and worth watching. Keep up the sweet work man x
there's a second version when Lana ends up drowning, I remember seeing it at the time and there are references to it on the wiki but I can't find it now for some reason
My interpretation of this song is you’ll notice when she’s with the older man she’s distant and dreamy. It’s almost as though she’s going through the motions to reassure him and play the part of his woman. Meanwhile when she’s with the other man on the beach she’s happy and free. She’s passionate and smiling. Confident in her own right. The contrast between the two make me feel as if when she’s with the older man she uses the relationship with the younger man to fuel her energy with the older man. The lyrics match that. She talks about leaving you for the moment you for the moment boy blue... I can see my sweet boy swayin.... the visual of these lyrics match the experience between the two guys. She’s in one committed relationship. The other man is the life she wants or at least enjoys. She is able to put her guard down and not have to live up to the glamour she portrays. She has to leave the younger man and all the while he weighs on her mind. It’s almost as she is constantly projecting him into her “real” relationship. She is a multifaceted woman torn between these two worlds. Lots of symbolism you can take on a personal account but I believe in general that is the raw message in the story being told.
in an interview she’s said that the beach scene is suppose to be her real life and the scene with the older man was suppose to be a dream in where he’s not her sugar daddy but a reliable person that she dreams of having, someone to lean on. the car scene was suppose to have a water filter over it to make it more hazy or dream like.
I think the film about Chet Baker 'Let's Get Lost' (filmed in 1988) was some inspiration for this music video so interesting that you said it feels 80s
I read somewhere that blue jeans, shades of cool and west coast was a trilogy with the same guy. Past and future, and that the verses in west coast are the memories of when they were younger, before she died
Yes shades of cool should be next 😊 thank you Jon for doing these reactions, it is really appreciated. I am hoping you will react to Lust for Life mv, two of my favorite artists in one video 😊 stay safe and healthy!
The man in the chorus is Mark Mahoney, a famous black-and-grey tattoo artist originally from Boston, MA, who moved to Hollywood to practice his art in his parlor, the Shamrock Social Club. I believe he did one of LDR's tattoos, and she loved his look and energy, which is how he ended up in "West Coast" and "Shades of Cool".
nah ok this is someone who gets Lana. everyone thinks her fans are people who are like "hehe sugar daddies and drugs" but no there's much deeper factors to her music. I'm glad he gets it lol
The beach life in the verses is the young care free and the life she really wants with someone shes really in love with - in the chorus its the life she chose for security with an older gentleman and she reminisces about that life. I pulled that all out of my ass btw
I could be wrong but I heard that she filmed the car scenes (older guy) when she filmed the Shades of Cool video and then used them later on when she filmed the rest of this video (beach scenes). She does look *slightly* different for some reason.
I read when the album came out that the label hoped for this song to be releasable as a single and was hoping for a pop music hit, but was disappointed that Lana made the chorus slower than the verses and refused to change it. The videos for Ultraviolence and later albums don't seem to have had the money put into their production that was spent on those for Born to Die. Perhaps the label decided that she was "alternative" and unlikely to cross over into the Top Ten hit list. If so, her integrity cost her a little bit of slick exposure, but gave us some honestly experimental music to enjoy.
The young guy is Bradley Solieu. The older gentleman is a world famous tattoo artist from LA, Mark Mahoney. He also makes an appearance in Shades of Cool. I think he was the muse behind this album.
One boyfriend of her passed away. For example, he's the one she wrote Yayo for (said so herself in some live shows).I think there are more references to that relationship throughout her writing: there's a tweet of Lana in Jan 1st of 2012 saying RIP to, as I'm aware of, that man, and there's the song Heroin in which she says 'Bad beginning to my New Year". I do think these videos are about it, but the other way around, like Lana's going to be old, and he will still be there beside her.
okay here you go .. the theory I believe to be true .. BORN TO DIE : the video is of her with her reckless love interest .. they're so passionate and full of feelings as you can see in the car scenes.. at the end of the video she passes away due to that passion that led to a car accident. WEST COAST: the video cuts between two timelines .. we basically see through the old man's eyes .. that's her love interest overwhelmed with guilt and yearning for her.. he can't get over her and driven to a point of madness where he sees her ghost everywhere .. SHADES OF COOL: is basically just how the old man is followed by her ghost .. btw.. I think blue jeans where he drowns her is a metaphor of how his reckless driving led to her death.
I feel like with the first guy she is more free, and truly loves him, but decides to go live a glamorous lifestyle.. “That’s why I’m leaving you for the moment, boy blue” then the old man it’s like in the future when she does get to live that glamorous life that she loves, but obviously misses her other lover.. “I can see my sweet boy swayin” even though she’s with the new guy.. just my interpretation since throughout all of ultraviolence Lana dives deep into dark relationships and even her vices.
The aesthetic of the video, is based off the let's get lost documentary about Chet Baker a jazz musician. It's nearly shot for shot in some parts, very interesting.
To me, they're the same guy excepts she died in the Born to die music video and she is haunting him when he's old/or he is remembering when she they were young.
The guy that plays the older guy is a famous tattoo artist and owns his own shop in West Hollywood, CA. He’s considered a living legend in the tattoo world. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Mahoney
I think the most popular theory is that Lana dies in the born to die video and the following videos are either before the events of born to die whilst she’s in the abusive relationship or of her haunting the boyfriend who caused her death. The older man is thought to be him in the future.
U can actually see the young guy dead in the background that means her sugar daddy killed him cuz she gotta end this Boi story somehow which explains why she's saying "move baby, move baby I'm in love" like she's warning him plus her sugar daddy is calm & aggressive, js.. Cuz this mv got a darker meaning than it sounds
Oh my god. I love you cause your reaction videos about Lana. I am so happy to hear that you wll react to TROPICO , because since the first video about Lana you made I've been asking and wishing you do this. Thanks for making me happy and now please do a video reaction to Ultraviolence
IDK about what the story is supposed to be here necessarily, but I believe the video as a whole is inspired by a Chet Baker documentary(?) called Lets Get Lost, and the older guy in the car is maybe supposed to have a later-years Chet look. I believe the older guy is a famous tattoo artist. Love these vids, as always! Looking forward to Tropico react
Born to Die - Lana died Blue Jeans - a memory of when Lana and the guy meets West coast - a memory of the guy from when they were at the west coast, and his desire to have her by her side as shown in the chorus Shades of cool - Lana is just a ghost, haunting the guy.
The older gentleman in the car is Mark Mahoney who is a famous LA tattoo artist! He’s done everyone from Notorious BIG to Lady Gaga, and of course, Lana. He’s pretty exclusive and quite a big name out there. Doesn’t really contribute to the theories, but thought it was worth mentioning ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
YOOOOOOO HEAR ME OUT! I think in Blue Jeans, it's about their YOUNG love - which doesn't work out because he was after money and leaves her to become a druggie gangster. Somewhere in the middle, they meet up again and get together. She leaves the young guy for the sugar daddy - who is also a druggie and a playboy, he's probably the "drug lord" and above all these petty gangsters and shit. In Shades of Cool phase, she realises that he actually doesn't love her the way she thinks he loves her - she compares her time with that dude with White Mustang (pun not intended) in the West Coast phase and then decides to leave the sugar daddy and rejoin the young guy, but dies in the process - born to die. Her spirit is recalling all the moments and reminiscing about her life and narrating it to us in form of songs. This fulfills her "I will love you till the end of time, I will wait a million years" promise to her gangster lover - but we all die anyway and she will be waiting for him in the other side (probably a spirit realm, I'm a pagan, if you're an abrahamic, it's prolly heaven for you), so that they can finally be together in peace - death is the only way to find peace, death is the only way they both can finally be together; mortal life is painful and torturous. (THIS IS JUST THE PLOT OF THE SERIES, THIS IS NOT HOW REAL LIFE WORKS, IF YOU NEED HELP, PLEASE SEEK A THERAPIST. IF SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS IN AGONY, GET THE HELP HE/SHE/THEY NEED OR CONTACT THE SUICIDE PREVENTION HOTLINE, PLEASE) 🥺🥺🥺🥺 Bruh this is so toxic yet a tragic and beautiful plot😂😂😂😂 (but it's not CONDONING this kind of toxicity, it's just a story line not that it should happen IRL. It happens to some people, it had happened to some. Let's just consider this as a tragic adult romance, when we read RJ, we, as adults, know how toxic characters are the flaws of the characters and the author must've intended to invoke that kind sense and feeling in the audience, but yet we find them beautifully tragic and tragically beautiful BECAUSE it's literature - not necessarily for the plotline). Cruel World is also probably about the sugar daddy, but we wouldn't know unless there's a MV for that. NOTE: Since she's comparing her life with these men, Blue Jeans could be happening after the scenes in West Coast, because he doesn't have any visible tattoos on blue jeans. They could've gotten together after first comes shades of cool, then west coast, then comes blue jeans and then born to die.
Probably my favourite lana's song. That switch of tempo is everything
Agreed
This and million dollar man for me
This and California
PLEASE react to Rambo by Bryson tiller ft. The Weeknd. It's amazing. I love you ❤️

Ugh imagine if it was never released 😩
West Coast raised me, my parents could never 💅🏽👁️👄👁️
Actually when West Coast got released it was pretty popular on some French radios, that's how I discovered the song at the time
I don’t see how this isn’t radio friendly…the standards for what is considered‘playable’ music is total garbage now for over a decade.
@@lisaelsancho6490france loves lana, we’ve been obsessed with her ever since the video games days 😭

Love watching your videos. I don’t have the attention span to watch tv only to listen to music and this is the perfect combo
The best song and video of Lana for me, masterpiece 🥰😍

WEST COAST: the video cuts between two timelines .. we basically see through the old man's eyes .. that's her love interest overwhelmed with guilt and yearning for her.. he can't get over her and driven to a point of madness where he sees her ghost everywhere ..
SHADES OF COOL: is basically just how the old man is followed by her ghost ..
btw.. I think blue jeans where he drowns her is a metaphor of how his reckless driving led to her death.
Please do shades of cool next
Damn I totally forgot about this song damn took me to a deep place from the memories it holds
It's nearly shot for shot in some parts, very interesting.
love this song
Yes!!
This is my go to earphone music while waking down a long busy road , along with Damien Rice's Blower's Daughter.......
Wish I could listen to this song for the first time again..😫
you're such a nice guy (:
What about Video Games and Summertime Sadness vidoes??
such a good song
To me, they're the same guy excepts she died in the Born to die music video and she is haunting him when he's old/or he is remembering when she they were young.
Holy hell!
React to Shades of Cool, please. You do a great job with Lana's songs! A big hug from Argentina!
we need that Flatbush Zombies reaction! you've been sleeping on Meech bro, that guy's a phenom
Oh my god. I love you cause your reaction videos about Lana. I am so happy to hear that you wll react to TROPICO , because since the first video about Lana you made I've been asking and wishing you do this. Thanks for making me happy and now please do a video reaction to Ultraviolence
What song is playing in the beginning of this video?!
OMG YES
I think this song is very cool, yeah, I mean these changes of temp are making song is better and cooler!
Young and Beautiful please
IDK about what the story is supposed to be here necessarily, but I believe the video as a whole is inspired by a Chet Baker documentary(?) called Lets Get Lost, and the older guy in the car is maybe supposed to have a later-years Chet look. I believe the older guy is a famous tattoo artist. Love these vids, as always! Looking forward to Tropico react
SHADES OF COOL music video reaction plz🙈🙈🙈🙈
Born to Die - Lana died
Blue Jeans - a memory of when Lana and the guy meets
West coast - a memory of the guy from when they were at the west coast, and his desire to have her by her side as shown in the chorus
Shades of cool - Lana is just a ghost, haunting the guy.
I hope someone sees this, it's literally 3.37am and I'm using my brain 😂😂 LMFAO.
