Three Mistakes I made during my first 100 Mile Ultramarathon!

  • Back in October of 2020 I completed my first ultra marathon at the Mohican 100. Today I explain what three mistakes could have potentially derailed me and caused me to DNF. Thankfully that didn't happen. If you're a long distance runner, ultra runner, or running enthusiast, these 3 mistakes could help you avoid your own racing disaster. You're welcome!

Speed work good for a race like Leadville but also for races with a lot of climbs I think it’s important to learn to power hike and really get proficient at using poles.
My final thing I have worked hard at during 100 milers is spending very little time at aid station. If i have a crew, grab go and eat while hiking.
    Enjoying the channel 😀👍🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

Jason Koop says aerobic fitness is best. I've started adding in 45m tempo runs this year because of him. Now I'm on week two of a marathon training plan. I hate plans, but I'm starting to get that they work well even for ultras.

Nice video. For QOD, Keurig for daily, I go French Press for weekends and special occasions. I did the Run Rabbit Run 100 in 2019 for my first 100, and I agree with #2. At around 60, I was going to drop. When I got to that aid station, I told them we need to go see the aid captain to drop. My crew must have "forgot" that part, because they proceeded to do the normal aid stop, and send me on my way. The rest of the day went great, but without them, I would have dropped for sure.

Lol. That sounds like a great crew. I was there in 2018...for the 50. Beautiful race!

QOD: I like how the kcups give a good strong cup of joe. I limit myself to 2 kcups and then fill one of those reusable kcups for all the rest of the coffee I drink that day. I had a course recon fail at mile 4 of an ultra race! I'm chuckling about it now, but I wasn't then!

Right makes for a good story but can be devastating at the time!

QOD: I have a combination, drip on one side and Keurig on the other. I am guilty of making all 3 of these mistakes (though I've never had a crew for any race). The biggest issue was number one where I misjudged the distance between aid stations (it was a few miles different than what was printed) and I ran out of water during the summer. Luckily, it was the last aid station before the finish but I ended up having to slow down to a crawl for the last section.

Been there done that. For some reason I do that a lot but aid stations always come to the rescue!

QOD: 100% drip. There's nothing like getting out of bed and starting that full lot of coffee to kick off the day

They make a K-cup refillable that we use its a metal mesh thing shaped like a k-cup. That way can put whatever coffe you like it isnt a million platic cups and get that nice hot coffe you like. They were cheap get like a 5 pack for 8 bucks on amazon.

Good point! I’d just rather put a couple more scoops in and have 4 more cups of fun.

@@UltraDad I hear ya me and the wife thought the same, biggest thing for us was the wasted coffee most the time and the clean up. One cup at a time won out in our battle. I actually was the one fighting for the drip coffee pot but when she was showing me time and again how much was left in the pot I couldn't argue. BTW like the video I run my first 50 miler this year and my first 100 miler next year! Barring any catastrophic injury!
