I lived in Waikiki in 80's and 90's. One thing you really missed when you talked about some scary nights in front of the Hyatt Regency, is the Honolulu Police Dept opened the 24 hour Waikiki Station (Hale Maka'i) in 1992, under the leadership of Chief Michael Nakamura. This is the safest beach 24 hours a day in Waikiki since then. It is connected to the concession stand, showers and restrooms that have long been located there. I tell ALL visitors to use THAT beach now because the police station is right there, and it's the last place the troublemakers want to go! Only a few yards away from the Duke's Statue! Mahalo for your video
Thank you for the tour. I have been to Hawaii twice, once with my mother. The second time was to scatter some of her ashes as she loved Hawaii so very much. If she had her way, she would have moved there. When I go, I don't do much besides walk to the beach. OMG, this is part of the route I took to the beach every day.
Great video i really enjoyed all the little tips and information about waikiki! I remember the old day's too with all the old stores and the streets and clubs were full with excitment! I haven't been back there for 5 years but hopefully one day i will return, i do like the new international market but miss the old one aswell it was one of mine and my mums favourite places, and the old nite club scruples we got so friendly with the staff they were like our second family and would let us in for free sometimes and gave a free drinks now and then because we went there most nights and the dj would always make us feel welcome and say on his microphone when we were on the dance floor, the kiwis are in the house haha yes those were the good old day's as you say! A lot has defintley changed there since my first trip in 1989 and ive been there around 13 times but everytime feels like the first because it is such an awesome place so beautiful with stunning views and gorgeous plants and flowers everywhere!! Mahalo
What a gorgeous, sunny day - perfect for a personalized tour! Wow, you’re so knowledgeable about the area! Thanks so much for the stroll and your very helpful narration. Have a wonderful week!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane - I'd forgotten about some of those places - great memory! The old Hula's! The iconic banyan tree with the lights. Tragic that the block (the Kuhio District?) was torn down for "Luxury Row". Ah, the Mitsukoshi building - remember the 'waterfall' windows? Ha! The Waikiki I grew up with (60s-70s), tho' gaudy as hell (e.g. Intl. Marketplace - tacky!), at least had character, but now, altho' more beautiful, it seems sterile. e.g. didn't the Waikiki 3 theatre have movie star autographs/handprints, like the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood? And fake palm trees inside! Character, I tell you! Don't think I can afford to live in Hawaii again (or even be buried there), but grateful to have grown up there. Memories! (btw I counted Satoshi gracing your viewfinder 27 times, lol! Next time I'm home I'll have to try his coffee place)
I'm happy I saw this post! My wife & I love Hawaii, and we can't wait until this covid business is in the rearview mirror and we will be back! Thanks again for the video!
Another great walking tour video! I miss home everyday but when I watch these videos I feel like I'm walking around with u so tyvm! Keep 'em coming plz! Love, love, love.
Just found this video. I loved it, Shinichi! I’ve visited Hawaii twice, and when I was there at Christmas 2017 I did the same ‘back to Kalakaua Avenue’ walk as you show here. I was surprised at how Waikiki had changed over the years, and I was shocked at how different the International Market Place was. It used to be a bit cheesy, but it was fun. Now it’s all luxury shops, with Saks 5th Avenue, Penhaligons etc. Still I liked walking around there, and I was so happy that the developers had retained the beautiful banyan tree. Here in Australia that tree would have been the first thing to go.
I thoroughly enjoyed this walk about. It was a treat to get to see where you grew up and to hear your thoughts and memories. The trees along the sidewalk where really gnarly. The way the limbs twisted around each other. Mother nature sure let's her presents be known. I gave up on the Satoshi count because I was afraid of missing something. Again, this, as always is a treat for an older person who can't get out to see the sights of places she would love to go. You keep it real for me. Love ya. JC
Thanks for this video. Its been 10 years since I went to Hawaii...its a little different. And What I bought from the ABC stores were souvenir of hello kitty in Hawaiian theme 😜 and thanks that store I LOVEE Spam Musubi...was my first trying one 😍😍😍
I'm sooo relaxed by now. Thank you for that walk ❤ I love the colors...all those shades of brown, green and beige/sand. Oh, and your voice and way of narrating! As a German (= non-native English speaker) it can sometimes be difficult for me to follow narrators when they speak a foreign language rather fast but when you speak it feels like someone's speaking German to me :) It's very comfortable and I appreciate that very much.
Omg, I just loved this video. Hawaii is so beautiful. I never seen it like this before. I seen it on Dog the bounty hunter but you don't get to see alot. Lol. I loved how you took your time and didn't talk fast to explain it all to us. THIS way it gave me time to take everything in. I really do love these walking videos. Thank you so much for taking the time on your vacation to show us where you grew up. Take care from Bethlehem pa
I love watching this video! I love to see other people's perspectives about where I live. I feel the same about Shirokiya. It's very sad to see all the empty stalls! Love the Waikiki Yokocho tho! Tried almost every single restaurant in there! Glad you guys had such a good time! You guys need to bring Lawrence back!
Thank you for the tour of Waikiki I used to work for longs drugs general office here in the states before they changed to CVS it brought back nice memories to see the old store again. I went to Hawaii 30 years ago it has changed a lot
I can't believe I didn't know about this channel. I discovered you through Tabieats. Subscribed right away. I'll be binge watching on my day off. Happy safe travel to you and your family.
I love Waikiki! I want to go back soon!! I love getting tips on what to see or do because I kind of get in a rut of doing the same stuff over and over. 😆
yeah, there used to be five theatres in Waikiki, Royal and Kuhio Theatres on Kuhio Ave. and standalone original Waikiki 3 Theatre on Kalakaua Ave., and later, the Waikiki 1 and 2 Theatres just around the corner on the side st. The last of the theatres closed in the early 2000s.
I`m a Japanese citizen, and I love Honolulu, Hawaii very much. In fact, I visited Honolulu more than 13 times so far. However, 13 years have passed since I visited Honolulu last time, and I`m very sad to hear that Kyoya is closed. Anyway, I miss Honolulu very much, and I would like to pay a visit to Hawaii again as soon as possible with my family. Greetings from Yokohama, Japan.
Nice tour of Waikiki! I live so close but don't go to Waikiki very often. I miss the "old" days in high school going to watch a movie and walking around. Also, going to mitsukoshi to play video games. Lots of the stores are high end ones. I took my daughter to the Forever 21 in Waikiki because it's really big compared to the one at ala Moana. I also noticed that there's a Lawson next to the Moana hotel. I didn't go in but I don't think it's as good as the one in Japan. I'll be in Osaka with my mom and sister in October. I love Japan. I think I'm starting to get in touch with my family culture.
Speaking of ABC Stores, my mom just retired a few months ago from there since working from the late 80s. Last she told me there's an ABC Store in every major hotel in Waikiki, and almost each block. That's a lot of stores. If your going to but tshirt from there, spend the few bucks more on the silk screen transfer shirts, & not the heat transfer ones. They last longer. I can say they do because I have a few that gets washed & worn every week & still holding strong.

Mahalo for that, I lived there in 93 and remember a lot of the way you describe. My dad also lived there when I was a keiki and would visit him for the summer. He lived at the base of Diamond Head by the Bistro (if you remember that place) and my sister ended up going to Kaimuki High for a couple years. I moved there when I was 21 and worked at the Tower Records by Ala Moana. It's a shame that all the shops are pretty much anywhere USA now. Thank goodness they spared the giant banyon trees.....I stay at the end of Waikiki as the Aston Waikiki and I like to swim down at Queens beach further down the street. And yes I hate the resort fees.

Harry Winston is a jewelry store that's been around since I think the 1930s. They are extremely expensive I'm assuming because you can't even see a price on anything on the website. 😅 But they have gorgeous jewelry.
I have not been there for a while, but I love your video of Kalakaua Street. I have not seen the new parts of the street from my last visit to Hawai’i . My mother was born there, and she has a bunch of family there still. I want to go there again, but my mother is not physically able to go back there at this time. My father/ her husband has passed earlier this year and she is grieving in her own way. I hope you and your sister is doing well.
I don't know why I've never been to Hawaii. I've always wanted to visit, but just never got around to it. It's so beautiful. Maybe I'll get there one day.
I didn’t know Longs Drugs still existed. When I was younger in California we had tons of them but they became CVS Pharmacy Stores. They were primarily a California chain with the first store opening in Oakland, California. Longs Drugs that’s a name I haven’t seen and heard for awhile.
When CVS bought the entire Longs Drugs Stores chain, they changed all the stores to the CVS name...EXCEPT for all the Longs Drugs in Hawaii...Guess we put up a big fight, and they realized Hawaii had a significant identity attachment with the Longs Drugs name and so allowed all the stores on all of the islands to remain as Longs Drugs...the paper bags/plastic bags still say Longs Drugs;...
as far as i can remember, the fire truck colors were changed from red to yellow to be more visible at night and day..believe the change happened in the 1970s or early 1980s. The only island with red fire trucks is on Kauai..
so interesting to hear a bit of history on what is now 'luxury row' - i stayed on that end of Waikiki in 2019 and there was only that one gay bar/club on a small side street
The Moana Hotel was the first hotel, built in late 1800s, opened in 1901. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel was built later and opened in early 1927...These are the two oldest hotels in Waikiki.
the Oceanarium was in the Pacific Beach Hotel just $100 million renovation into the Alohalani Resort. Built in 1979, the three-story, 280,000-gallon, larger-than-life aquarium provides incredible views of nearly 400 fish.
Harry Winston......lets put it like this. for the academy awards, actresses wear his multi million dollar jewels escorted by armed guards.does honolulu have a lot of rich residents or are these shops mainly for tourist?

with Hamburger Mary's right around the corner from the old Hula's.. But geez, really, ABC stores everywhere still?
I think the Royal Theater also had twinkling lights up in the ceiling to mimic a clear starry night and they also had the fake palm trees.
Wonderful video! Thank you showing us around 💙💙💙
Thanks for showing us around and sharing the history of the area

That was a super enjoyable walk Shinichi, so relaxing ... no wonder you miss Hawaii, what a cool place to grow up 😃
Thank you for the tour of Waikiki I used to work for longs drugs general office here in the states before they changed to CVS it brought back nice memories to see the old store again. I went to Hawaii 30 years ago it has changed a lot
I walked many times down the same street each time I found something I didn't see before loved it there walked around town many times
Great video. I miss the theaters too...one of my first movies was The Sound of Music at the Waikiki theater 😊

Sébastien Fortin Yes! We should start a petition to have shinichi and Satoshi take us on a tour of Waikiki!
I haven't sold and been to Hawaii since the 90's.. It's completely different . Love this video !

Wow....beautiful walk about shinichi
Having a walk in Honolulu awesome be safe God BLESS to all
Thanks too! Been to the ABC store in Guam..nice place too!
It's very very nice movie!
たくさん歩きましたね〜^^
It's a great video. Feels like I joined a walking tour! Admire your skills for walking and still take quite stable videos. I tried. I failed.
Jean J yes, I felt the same way! I can definitely see Shinichi being a walking tour guide! Entertaining, knowledgeable, and such a soothing voice; perfect combination for a tour guide!
Jean J By the way, about the stability, he might be using a gimbal, which is a stabilizer for cameras and phones. It creates super smooth vodeos, even while running!

i remember the theatre that had moving clouds on the ceiling, forgot if it was 1, 2, or 3...
I think it was the waikiki Theater, which i guess would be 1?

Wow yeah. The pedicab drives. I kinda miss those days.
Always use to get the Shorebird Waikiki coupon out of those coupon books for breakfast.
This is such a wonderful walking tour! I've never been to Hawaii, but watching this makes me want to visit! So beautiful! By the way, I had no idea that you can't cross the street while using your phone there! How much is the fine if you do get caught? I wish they would implement that law in more places!
I don’t know but it’s a new law. I think it’s a few hundred dollars but I’m not sure.
So much has changed since I was there in 2012
That was a wonderful walking tour of Waikiki!
It has changed so much since I was there! Just one question...the best Spam musubi on Oahu...aren't they the ones your dear mother makes?!? LOL! I know not everyone can get them, but hers look the most delicious of all! 😃
Nice video. I just visited Waikiki a month ago. Great trip!
Eat With Karen Wow, lucky! Ive never been, but this video makes me want to go! Did you walk the same street as the one in the video?
im so appreciative! the camera is sooo steady! wow
Morimoto is in the old Pacific Beach Hotel now known as the Alohilani Hotel.
Oh...the buses...amazing
i sure did expect a lot of people to be there!
I really, really enjoyed this walk. I want to hop on a plane right now! Mahalo Shinichi! Oh, and PS, I like the hot soup at ABC stores! Not all of them have prepared food though.

I’m always considering it
That is too bad about Shirokiya, but thank you for giving me an alternate destination. I really enjoy walking videos, thank you!

74 ABC stores in Waikiki.
Interesting🌸 (I’ve never been to Hawaii!)
The fire trucks are yellow in Waikiki???
Yes they are!
I live in Northern California. Some communities here have yellow fire trucks also. 😊
as far as i can remember, the fire truck colors were changed from red to yellow to be more visible at night and day..believe the change happened in the 1970s or early 1980s. The only island with red fire trucks is on Kauai..
here in the states..most abc is liquor
Great video

Royal Hawaiian was the first hotel in hawaii
The Moana Hotel was the first hotel, built in late 1800s, opened in 1901. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel was built later and opened in early 1927...These are the two oldest hotels in Waikiki.

Does anyone else remember a building that had an aquarium on the strip? Can someone tell me what the was?
Yes the aquarium is still there.
the Oceanarium was in the Pacific Beach Hotel just $100 million renovation into the Alohalani Resort. Built in 1979, the three-story, 280,000-gallon, larger-than-life aquarium provides incredible views of nearly 400 fish.
