    This video was hidden for it's first 36 hours of life on the internet. In that time 200 users followed our ARG to get to this page. The following congratulations message was originally posted on this video:

    The most interesting last months of the ARG were barely touched (for example: where did the player get the box with the button from, where did the key for it come from, etc. The thing with the launch holding back around christmas was actually due to having the key mailed across US from the west coast to the east and it only arrived at christmas when Randomiser - the person with the box was away for the family obligations).
    Just for the taste of what those last months of the ARG entailed, a "short" list: a real-life event with a bee-man in a supermarket; scraps of paper with codes in a tennessee library; a room escape in Portland; a letter from a time traveller inside a book in another library in Berkeley; continuously released series of TH-cam videos with coordinates that slowly spell out "BUTTS"; multiple professionally made songs and/or music tracks; 3D models of FF2 memorabilia; a unity game "Unboxing Story" that mimics Her Story and has some Sigil secrets.

    FF2 is more about the story behind and around the game than the game itself. The game, on the whole, is mildly amusing and not very fun. But as this documentary shows, the story behind it is fascinating.

      That's probably something we call "meme" - it doesn't have much value itself, but if put in right context with right experience/knowledge applied, it becomes actually valuable, uncovers some story and narrative.

    Frog Fractions 2 honestly blew me away with it's scope. It constantly challenged me and made me laugh at the same time. The way the stuff you did in text world was always changing was so cool that I am still screaming internally about why no one else I know is talking about it. It was my game of the year last year for sure.

  • @RichardBlaziken

    I'd heard of Frog Fractions 2 a good while back (courtesy of Two Best Friends Play wondering if everything was Frog Fractions 2), but the story... jeez man. I don't even know what to think, aside from this is a brilliant marketing move in every way except financially. But from the sound of it, I think it's immensely successful in the way the creator values most, and that's worth it.

    This conversation was amazing! A shame the game has less than 10k owners on Steam. Even if a fraction (pacepalm) of folks who enjoyed this video bought the game today, these numbers would jump significantly. The first sale will boost these figures, and perhaps a re-labeling in the future would help? But that might sacrifice the integrity of the game. What a unique story though, cheers DoD!

    I haven't played this game yet, but based on what I saw online, it makes sense why it's not selling super well. The most interesting thing about it is that it's hidden in another game. One of the things about the first game that made it special was how it started out normal and gradually got weirder and weirder. This game seems like a consistently random collection of mini games. There is no escalation and no sense of surprise.

    This really hits on what was coolest about the post Frog Fractions world. Every game that was released could secretly be Frog Fractions 2. There was that inherent mystery. On the topic of putting the game on sale I think the problem you might have is that people won't remember that Frog Fractions 2 is within the fairy game when you put it on sale. Which might also be part of the poor sales.
    Maybe another "thing" in order to get it back into the public space around when you do decide to put it on sale might help?

    • @eod696
      @eod696 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The distribution setup is just a nightmare man...you're tying the fate of two games together that couldn't be more polar opposite in terms of target audience - sarcasstic, nostalgic 90s gamer vs 12 yr old girl...so your pitting the market forces against one another over your game, and it certainly doesn't help that you wont identify the ip or its creator - it's destined to bomb, and drag whatever you tie it to down with it, unless the two ips would reach the same sorts of people naturally.
      I think patching it into one game is a narrow way to go, man. Crawford should patch it into bunches of games. It could be hidden in subliminal updates across the industry, and he could take a royalty on analytics data about how many times the patch gets accessed. Booyah...exponential growth, for a seemingly infinite period...new year, new games, new patch.

    • @aljowen
      @aljowen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perhaps separating it from its current host, so they both become separate games?
      Then giving owners of the fairy game a copy of frog fractions 2 as a separate entity. That way it at least gains better brand recognition on Steam from people who might remember something about that game when seeing the title.
      I would rather not have 5 copies of the same game on my hard drive from various indie games.

    • @anonony9081
      @anonony9081 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      aljowen I think he's talking about people like myself. I saw the price point and put it on my wish list. its a game I want to try but there are other, cheaper games that I would buy first. if this went on 50% sale is buy it today.

    • @aljowen
      @aljowen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would assume there probably aren't a whole lot of people such as yourself compared to the number of people who were aware of frog fractions.
      The indie game space is a drop in the pond compared to mainstream gaming, dilute that further to people who have heard of frog fractions, then dilute that down to the number of people who have heard of the second one. Within that you have the people who did buy it, which wasn't enough to make a profit, never mind fund a sequel. Even if at launch it sat at 50% of people purchasing and 50% waiting for a sale what are the chances that they are still interested in the game after this length of time?
      Not to mention that many publications didn't think much of the game either, which further hurts the games chances to succeed within the already small group of people who have heard of it.
      Perhaps with video's such as this one publicising the game it will be able to gain enough traction to be commercially successful. Even though I didn't play the series (watched a lets play of the first and didn't bother with the second) I do hope the creator is able to justify future game endeavours, he sounds like a guy with a lot of cool ideas with potential.

    • @dstarr3
      @dstarr3 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I reeeeeeeally don't think he's that concerned about money. I mean, anyone who even knows what money is knows that his chosen distribution method is a disaster. I think he's much more likely making a point by going the route he has.

    Another well put together doc! I always find it disheartening that someone who has given most of their ideas and talent away for free later asks for a little compensation on a project and people don't op to help them out. It's odd because if you played frog factions a few times, followed the ARG and didn't kickstart the game or buy it when it was available... It just seems weird to me to not throw them some cash.
