Their 1981 Wimbledon match exemplified the type of tennis they played that hasn’t been seen since.

I had the privilege of being there for that match. Connors won the first two sets, and it looked as if Borg's long unbeaten run at Wimbledon, dating back to 1976, was coming to an end - and at the hands of one of his two arch rivals. But he hung on and won a five set classic. Even my old dad, who generally detested tennis, watched it on television. 'What a match,' he said. 'Couldn't leave it could you?'

I remember it like yesterday. I was 17 and had come home from school especially to see it.
I was terrified of Connors intensity.
When he got the 2 set lead I remember thinking "right. There is NO WAY Connors was losing this match. Not a player of his standard".

Fantastic 5th set! Strange score though, 0-6,4-6,6-3,6-0,6-4. Perhaps a match Connors thought he let get away!

they were the best rivals at the top of their games.lots of fun to watch.they made me a very good player just by inspiring play.i had a solid work ethic and so much fun playing, playing, playing; serve them up! Thank you, Jimmy, and thank you, Bjorn Borg, McEnroe, Rafael Nadal,Sampras ,Federeretc.a truly great hard sport and for fucks sake - playing 4 hours at a time….it was great.

potterwalker4823@ you mentioned almost all of the best players among which are mentioned 2 out of 3 from the big three. The question is why didn't you mention the third one from the big three who is the better player than those two? You can't just say Nadal,Federer and then stop.

Borg is largely correct. These two were something else. And for a 9-yr old baseliner with a self-made 2- handed backhand, supposedly modeled after my hero Rod Laver but obviously with a major modification, Conners & Borg REDEFINED tennis and made me legitimate. Thanks guys. I could never bring myself to root for one over the other and can only say that, in my limited view, Borg OWNED the clay and Conners the hardcourts. As for how either ever played great on grass, i never figured it out.

The truth...for me, as a kid growing up in the 70s, is that there was no tennis before Connors. Borg wasn't even on my radar until he won Wimbledon in '76. So...with respect to Bjorn, Jimmy came first. *Then* it was Jimmy and Bjorn a couple of years later. And THEN it was the *three of them,* not just Bjorn and John. Then Bjorn quit. And then it was Jimmy and John.

Interestingly, Borg was not friend with Connors as he was with Mcenroe. It is the only person Borg spoke out against at a press conference agter a match: "This guy can never admit anyone played better than him -he is a bad loser!". But with time they got on apparantly.

Hello Brett and Jimmy your Podcast is by far the best out there in tennis!!
This interview is truly great you're all having such a good time and it's wonderful to hear...
Jimmy you are beyond the treasure for the game of tennis and for so many reasons not just incredibly great tennis ability but also bringing the game to another level with interest... And without your abilities borg and mack would not have ever been nearly as great as they became...
I'm an exercise physiologist with division one level tennis I use my skills to help many athletes and not athletes play tennis from all levels.. And train to be better... Another sports as well.. Jimmy you are by far the most important tennis player with extreme humility that you will never get credit for... There also as great as they come... You and Borg Are actually far greater than people will appreciate today .. With the same equipment And peacability let's just say many tennis players won't be having that happy-go-lucky interview with tennis channel after having a match on a given day probably more often than they would like to think....lol
Jimmy you are a treasure to the Game that It's so wonderful and only partially appreciated at even to this date.... Brett it's so wonderful to hear you and Jimmy do this interview the mutual love and respec Between the both of you is an extremely powerful force... I am lucky to have family that I am bought in with... Play more powerful..... Jimmy you are the most important part of the game of tennis today not having any thriving as it would without you spurring on all the other great tennis players of your era and you being the leader of the pack... Without Jimmy Connors there will not be the same interest in tennis today simple as that... It's far as ability well you and bored At your peaks of ability will be as good if not better than anybody from the past present or future... Much more but the tennis is only part of it I hope You and Brett and family are able to feel the love of these tennis followers and players all the time in addition to all the other interests that you and Brett and the family have... Game set and match Brett and Jimmy and advantage connors!

Not quite true, Bjorn. Being that I'm 65, from the 70s, I'd say 2 people put tennis on the map back then: Jimmy Connors and Billie Jean King. Connors, the first certifiably great player with a 2 handed backhand and Billie's battle of the sexes match against Bobby Riggs, to this day is the most watched tennis match. You were part of it Bjorn, but without those 2, tennis is not where it is today.

I'm three years older than you. You were a bit young I think. Borg was an international sensation. I didn't care about Connors until Borg came along. As for ladies tennis, I'm sure Billie Jean was huge but it was Borg Connors and then Borg Mac that got me to care about tennis on TV. And Im from the US. Borg was an even bigger sensation Internationally. Connors just turned off most people outside the US.

Chris Evert has said when Borg came along he was like a rockstar and catapulted tennis to unprecedented popularity (particularly in Europe).Wimbledon 1973, when he was a young 17 year old blond Adonis with incredible flair, saw him mobbed wherever he went (that never happened to ‘pudding basin haircut’ Connors). Laver and Newcombe were also huge stars before Connors came along not forgetting Goolagong in the women’s game. Jimmy is an important part of the 70s tennis scene but plenty of others were equally if not more charismatic
