I played one of these over the weekend and couldn't believe how well it played and felt. You get a lot of bass for the cash with this one. I know some folks might be put off that it's a Squier, but as someone who's owned many basses and played for 25 years, I was impressed.
I just bought one of these. GREAT BASS!!! Especially for $375. I haven’t replaced the strings yet. As I do, a new Leo Quan copy bridge is going on it too. I also plan to upgrade the tuners as well. But right out of the box, after a little tightening of EVERYTHING (including the truss rod), this bass kicks ass!!!
This is so much electric bass for such a modest price, it is a no brainer. Present day Squiers are not the crap I had to deal with during the early 90´s. Glad that players today can have access to great quality instruments at interesting prices. I love how it looks huge, a man´s instrument, lol
@TONY10400 Thanks!! It's a great bass, glad you got one!! I installed some Ulyate Instruments pickups. Passive single coils, I'm editing a video on them and it should be done by the weekend. Thanks again and congrats!!
I found one on ebay for $280.00. I was surprised how good it sound. There were no dead spots on the neck. The pickups sound good. I do have a set of Bartollini 5 string jazz bass pickups. I might drop them in the bass.
@birkins Thanks and glad you dig the review!! This bass is super solid when it comes to projecting the LOW's!! I've only tuned my B string down to A and it sounded great!! If there is one downfall it's the pick ups, they're great but changing to better pickups makes a huge difference!! Hope this helps. If there's any way you could try the bass before you buy at a gig or rehearsal that would be optimal.
@@Scarabee80 th-cam.com/video/1aoMFz12bEs/w-d-xo.html put that link in your search bar and check out that video u get to hear the sound of the bass much better!🤘🏼
Btw...I did change the pickups and it made a huge difference. The Seymour's are great but better pickups make this bass sooooo much better than it already is.
Totally agree with the strings part. The stock ones sounded a bit dead in my Squier VM, so I changed them for a set of d'Addario EXL 170 and the bass sounded amazing, almost as a different bass.
Thanks soo much!! I agree with you 10000%!! It seems that it would be so easy to make a template that spaces the pickups with 70's spacing, especially because everything is CNC'd. I will ask the Fender powers that be at the upcoming Bass Hang on Oct. 12. I believe there will be a representative from Squier there. Thanks again!!
Mines a two piece and its matched so well you can barely see the join, got it for a steal too on ebay. Awesome bass. Was thinking of changing the nut to a real bone one.
Hey dude thanks for this review. I was thinking about buying an American Fender 5 String Jazz Bass but I also own a Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster and it sounds as good as my American Fender Telecaster. Watching this review made me realise that this bass might be as good as the Fender, Maybe swap the electronics and we should be good?
I always loved the Squier Jazz Bass Series. They represent great value plus its sometimes very hard to distinguish them from a 'real' Fender Jazz Bass in blind A/B comparison. I personally prefer the 3TS, but way to go Squier!
thanks so much for the great reviews and killer playing!!! I am so getting this Bass! I've always wanted a 5 string Jazz, especially without breaking the bank. they feel great and sound wicked, it's great that GC always has them in stock to play around with!
The pickups are Duncan Designed. I believe they are made i Korea via licence. All the Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe instruments have these pickups. Probably not quite the same as US Seymour Duncans but great pickups (especially considering the price point) I'd say they're on par with Fender US standard pickups, maybe even a bit better. I see no reason to change them unless you're going for a completely different kind of pickup.
I may be able to explain the "dead sounding" stock strings. Everyone of the 70's vintage mod basses come with flat wound strings. At least in every guitar store that I've seen them. I'm not a flat wound guy myself but otherwise, great video. Thanks for posting and explaining the whole 70's spacing thing.
The spacing thing is probably because the change was probably done later, as the new 77 model does have the 70s spacing (or so it seems). Awesome review. I am subscribing!
Tnx 4 the test. Buzz: I'm not sure , but I think the buzz u hear may be from the fact that he must be using a mic (also) for his voice. So it might pick up the buzz hearable directly from the strings, through the mic. So that means this buzz is not so much hearable if you only would get the sound from his amp. Hope it was helpful
Thanks!! Thats a tough one....they are very different animals. I love both basses but personally like the Jazz because of the two pickups, the Musicman is still pretty versatile with just one pickup but I prefer the Jazz.
I LOOOOOOOOVE this bass...easily the best 5 string that I've EVER played and the B string sounds great and full too. I tried 1 of these in guitar center and I went yesterday to try it again and it was gone :( When I have the resources available I am most definitely going to pick it up!!!
Hey Steve, Not sure if you still have this bass, but I decided to try D'Addario Pro Steels on this bass (though mine is a 2015 model with Fender-designed pickups). After only a couple months, I find that the string seems to dig into the frets a good deal. Have you noticed anything like this? I used D'Addario Nickels prior to the Pro Steels, and there were no grooved dug into the frets with them. I think I will switch back...fret wire on these is a bit soft...
Edward Tapper Hi Ed!!! I don't have it anymore but when I did have it I did play it all of the time and never seemed to have that issue. Perhaps a batch were made with softer fret wire? I am going to be getting another one soon, I'll be doing some traveling and these are perfect basses for that. Thanks.
I love my VM,the older ones have Fender designed pickups in them. I did notice the wiring in mine looks different than yours,I got actual clothe like material covered wiring, like you find in older electronics,I bought mine at a pawn shop, maybe this was done by the previous owner,BUT it really don't look like it to me,it all looks factory
I've got the 4 string Sterling, a great bass but if you want the spanky top-end of this Jazz, you need the Jazz...I'm adding the 5-string...but keeping the Sterling...
Low B are known to be weak on Fender basses due to 34” scale, poor design of neck and pickup location. How does it sound on this Squier model? (Need more user feedback to add to comments at time 6:06)
is it too bright? due to the fact that is maple and maple. how is the bottom end? because the videos are always cut frequencies in comparison with the real thing
hi, if I don't remember wrong, I think I saw another video testing squier VM 4 strings. did you notice difference between them ? Im really doubting between 4 and 5 strings version. if they sound equal, I'll go for V. thanks and regards !!!
I think these basses are great. I've tried a couple at GC. being that you have tons of experience with Jazz Basses, how does it compare with an actual Fender 70's? thank you.
How is for a starter bass? Played guitar for years but want to move onto Bass and i'm looking for a bass that isn't exactly cheap, but is not too expensive.
Is that fret buzz I'm hearing from 5:15 to 5:30? I just picked up a used one today from Musician's Friend - I'll have my guy do a complete setup for me once it shows up. Can't beat it for the price; nice complement to my fretless Squier Jaco bass.
Great review I have my eye set on the squier 1977 Jazz bass that they released a bit ago. Quick question did you lower the string height when you put a new set on or is this how the bass came? Just curious since there is a good amount of frett buzz once you change to fingers especially when playing low on the neck. Also how is the pickup volume compared to an American Jazz bass? Word is that the output is lower then normal thus replacing them with a set of Bartolini's or EMG's is the way to go but I didnt hear that in you review. Great match with your Mark Bass amp too!
Definitely had to set up a little when changing string and going direct there's no string noise. Volume on the pickups is a little low on the stock pickups. The definite needed upgrades are strings and pickups, that makes this bass comparable to basses that are 2-3 times more than this bass.
Virgil I bought the bass that you're referring to and I bought a set of Fender 75 RI pickups to replace the SD's that the bass came with ( which btw sounded pretty damn good with them ) and now it sounds absolutely amazing. ! mind you I have a Real 74 and 77 and I won't say that the Squire is kicking their ass but it ain' t taking a back seat to them either as far as tone is concerned
Hello, first of all great review, really tempted by this bass tho I wondered if you could help. My band play in drop g on seven string and F standard on 8 and was wondering have you tried this bass in such a low tunning and how does it get on? I'm worried the passive pickups won't handle it. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, paul
Greatest part of the bass. If it get's thrashed, you can just get a new one. I liked that comment. Sounds like Kurt Cobain's style of guitar management. But great sounding bass and thanks for the video.
Hey man i just want to know that if i replace the EMG JVX with this stock pick up then how it will sound? And with loaded EMG's will it be better sounding bass than the marcus miller sire V7 bass? Great review by the way.
60s has a 3.6 inch spacing whereas 70s had 4 inch spacing (bridge pickup moved closer to saddles for brighter tone). Hence the Squier vintage modified 70s Jbass keeps the 3.6in spacing hence “modified” from the vintage spec
