My squier 70 lefthanded jazz bass has a beautiful birtheye neck ! Sounds great , love to play it ! I use this boy for all my rehearsells, live gigs ; p bass 1979, mm 2003 . But i consider to play the boy for my live gigs for certain songs also, sounds great looks great , plays easy .
I just would like to say on behalf of all of my modder friends, that the personalization factor of buying a less expensive instrument and putting on different parts is a great joy in life. Who agrees with that?

I have that exact bass and it's a pleasure to play. I haven't played many fenders because I don't have money but for its price, it's fantastic.
Buy what ytou can afford and makes you happy. The Squiers I tried felt really good, even before a setup. A fine bass to gig with and you wont have to watch like a hawk.I wouldnt bring a vintage 70s jazz bass to a bar gig these days. Some drunk does a header dancing and your shit gets all fucked up. The Squier would just get some character and be on it's way to becoming a vintage instrument one day.

I was intended to mod mine anyway with an Audere preamp, battery box, Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounds and Hipshot hardware so I decided that there was no real benefit in anything more expensive than the Squier. But the Squier is a very heavy bass, over 5kg. That's the only thing I regret. It hurts my back after a while
Beware the tuners. A few hard hits and I've seen the cloverleaf part of the tuner start rattling and work loose. The are put together with a dinky tack weld. The MIM's have fairly solid hardware overall.

I use them all for recordings and gigs every week! They never let me down.
I have the Squier 70's and its a fantastic bass, and the cost is just amazing. I sold a bass that costs twice as much as the Squier and kept the Squier jazz bass. i dont see how they can sell it that cheap for what it is, it really sounds and plays great

Fender just has their crap together with the guitars they sell- American, Mexican, Japanese, or even the Asian contract stuff from Squier. I really appreciate that they don't sell anything that is junk. They have really set the bar for the rest of the industry, and it's probably why we have so many good choices in guitars nowadays. Anyone that was playing in the '80's can testify to that- because anything low priced was barely playable garbage.
Some of the affinity are junk, well the tuners are on most of the models.
@@johncollins5552 i mean somethings gotta get downgraded for that price range. At least tuning pricey so when you save up the money you can upgrade the tuning pegs and have a fantastic guitar/bass

I had to watch this (in 2022) since I just picked up my first ever bass (I’m a lifelong guitarist) - and it’s this exact Squier jazz natural finish. I love it! But on another note I completely agree with Pete about all this chatter about 7.25” radius necks! My first guitar was a 1965 Fender Jaguar with a 7.25” radius and I never had any problems with bending notes! Never could understand what people were talking about. It has become accepted myth but a good setup will stop that problem! Love you guys!
Thank you for the comparisons. I think the Mexican Fender wins the best looking award with its gorgeous woodgrain. I just bought the Squire, I am happy to report that 4 years later it comes with black knobs just like on the Fenders.
The Squier Certainly holds it's head up pretty well. As others mentioned I thought the pickup position was the main thing for its different sounds of the 70's jazz. Combination of the Tele and jazz at the beginning was classic, very nice.

I know this was a jazz bass shootout, but damn that was a nice looking and sounding P-bass at the end. A great way to start the day after a night out in Denmark with to many Gammel Dansk :D Nice playing both of you.
I have to say that Pete and Nathan have excellent on-screen comedic chemistry. In my surmise they blow away Chappers and Cap'n Lee as an entertaining duo. No competition really -- Pete and Nate need their own show on a major network! They are like the State Champion varsity team and Rob and Lee and like the piddly junior high squad. And yes, everything is a competition and Pete and Nathan win! Interestingly enough, I own both an American Fender Jazz Bass and the Squire shown in this video and I must say that I actually play the Squire more often than I do the American (I did swap out the pickups and pots)!

I’ve got a 2010 MIM ‘70’s’ jazz, it looks more like that Japanese one. It’s my number one recording/gigging instrument and it’s just a darling to play. I love it deeply and would never swap it for some £1800 American Fender.

I bought the actual squire used in this video from Andertons in Guildford. Dave who sold it too me was a top fella. He did suggest I consider a Sire but I’d already set my heart on the squier. I was quite surprised the range of sounds I can get out of this thing. But it is heavy but then I’ll only ever play it whilst sat at home on the sofa so not a problem. I’ve got some thomastik flats for it.

The aged headstock on the US one is accurate. I can't remember the reason exactly (something to do with the decal?) but the face of the headstocks were sprayed with nitro while the rest was poly so it'd age differently.

I suprised myself actually! Usually, like most guitarists i would be snobby and only ever touch the USA Fender bass. However i was pleasantly suprised with the Mexican made Fender as i thought the higher output sounded better and the way it looked was better too. Obviously it was much cheaper too!! Of course this is only my opinion but i think the Mexican made Fenders are underestimated! Thanks for a great video🤘
Having owned a couple of MIM Telecasters... yeah, they are very good indeed! However the surprise for me is how good some of the Squire stuff is.
I actually thought the squire sounded the best, then the Mexican, then the American. I'm weird though, Cuz I love the sound when string rattle just a little, IDK why.

I got the Squire years back, put DP123 pups in it, it’s awesome. The bass is totally worth more than 350, and with these pups for only 130 bucks, it’s a no brainer.
70s J-Bass with block inlays is an absolutely perfect instrument design, IMO. I own a lawsuit-era MIJ Matsumoku J-Bass (the "Fresher Personal Bass") and it's utterly great.
The early 80's bass Pete brings out has 1960's (current) pickup spacing. The others have 70's pickup spacing where the bridge pickup is .5 inch or so closer to the bridge.
The Mexican made "classic" series is the greatest secret in the Fender lineup. In many ways better than the American stuff.
I thought Mexico was in America anyway. Who am I though aside from someone who knows the difference between a continent and a country. (not a knock on you. happens every single day. Made in America and Made in Mexico are not mutually exclusive from one another.)
Fektthis Nah its pretty different. Mostly because in America people demand higher pay so they are rightfully held to a higher standard. In mexico the labor is cheaper and they dont have their top instrument craftsmen there. I see that all of non American factories for most major guitar companies are improving though.
you're making a few very bad assumptions. higher pay does not mean higher craftsmanship. it just means the union makes sure the guy that works there gets more wages. it also means it's harder to fire him. have u seen some of the garbage coming out of the Gibson USA shops lately. 2nd, lower pay does not mean lower workmanship. Those jobs could actually be more competitve. You have to earn your keep. Again, no union protection. I'm not trying to sound ant-union here. They're what makes the USA great. However, in Mexico the labor is cheap but the good jobs scarce. They'd be able to pick and choose and get the good workers and weed out the rest. Not saying this happens in every case on either side. Just saying that both do occur regularly. Lets no confuse on what making an electric guitar is anyway. In these shops it's not a master luthier that's required to produce a good instrument. It's someone who pays attention to their job and a quality control team that makes sure they do as well.
I agree , I've had Japanese , older Mexican , chinese etc.. Fenders and Squiers. My Latest Mexican standard Strat is by far the best Strat I've ever had , the finish is great , the neck is awesome , it stays in tune , I can't fault it for 50%+ less than the USA equivalent

I had a 79 USA jazz bass in natural finish which had white pearloid inlays in it. Sold it to buy keyboard gear 27 years ago and am currently awaiting delivery of a Squire in natural like the on in this video...see how it feels

What has the most obvious affect on tone? Pickups, amp, cabinet, tone knob, equalizers, room acoustics, tree, tree finish?
A glaring difference is the pick up spacing in the 70’s bridge pickup was closer to the bridge the squire has a 60’s pickup spacing
the main thing that distinguishes a 70s Jazz bass from other jazz basses is the spacing of the pick ups. The 70s bridge pick up is closer towards the bridge compared to other jazz basses.

The pickup spacing, with the bridge pickup being closer to the bridge, is only true on the Mexican and USA made 70s Jazz basses, the Squier retains the "normal" spacing.
Now i see why playing on the bridge pickup is so painful on my 70' squier, the strings are very hard down there
I decided myself for the Squier VM 70ies Jazz Bass. Went to a local guitar store with a friend of mine, who has 15 years more experience with instruments than i do. Tried out everything from American Fenders, Mexican 70ies, Warwicks, to MusicMans, all ranging from 300€ to 1200€. None of them felt right, at least from the 10 basses I tried. They had the Squier in i think three colours. Tried all of them, but only the natural finished one was set up right and was manufactured to absolute perfection (at least for Asian standards). Got a huge discount on it and only paid 325€ instead of like 415€. My friend was surprised how well made it is. It's my favorite instrument, couldn't complain at all. If i had the money however, i would definetly go for the American Elite series. Same design with the block inlays and natural finish (I love that style!).

Could you guys do another comparison with a new Squier CV 70s that comes with the correct 70s closer to the bridge pickup position? I think the Squier could come up quite closer to the Fenders.
The older headstocks are usually darker because Fender realized they couldn't use the same finish on the body as the headstock, because the logo would slip right off. I can't remember which finish is which though...

I have a made in 2006 '75RI MIA Jazz bass that looks exactly like Pete's, but with black pick guard. That's probably an RI mate, the Japanese ones usually are too. I love mine, wouldn't change it for the world :)
some great grooving, and as for the basses i would have the mexican over the others, just a personal choice, as for that head stock, it looks like they just picked out the neck in a game of eenie meeny miney mo.

Tonally I prefer the American Fender; aesthetically I prefer the Mexican Fender. Having said that, the Squier has an incredibly nice look and sound as well! They've really done a hell of a job with their Classic Vibe line of guitars and basses. I have a CV Tele myself, and I love it!

The Squier would be absolutely fine with a little bit of EQ'ing on the amp I reckon. A little more low end and a tiny bit less top. I think maybe that's where some of the money goes...? The general rule of thumb seems to be; the more money you spend on a Jazz, the less work you have to do in studio with it to make it sound its best. Edit: And then there's the build quality, finishing & setup too. **shrug**

Nitro Cellulose lacquer :) Cheers from across the pond. Oh and if it helps , explaining the neck radius to anyone, imagine a circle 14 inches in diameter. The radius of that circle is 7 inches. Then take a chunk of that circle for the face of the fingerboard. That neck would have a 7 inch radius. The larger the radius, the flatter the neck. Compound radius necks have a different radius between the first and last fret.
I think they all sound great, but the standout is the MIM, then the Squier, and the MIA just sounds a bit weedy compared to the others. I'm in the market for something of this ilk, and if I had the money I'd take the MIM in a heartbeat, but I think the Squier will do me nicely.

Max Dewil My vote goes towards the Squier VM 70’s. I have a VM 70’s 5 string jazz bass and am able to dial a nice Mac Demarco tone. The great thing about the jazz bass is that it’s very versatile and you’ll be able to play pretty much anything else short of Djent or extreme metal
They should do a video of the Vm70s vs the Ibanez tmb 310 or even the 300
That was really interesting..had phone bluetoothed to Pure Dab stereo radio while servicing my bike so not watching the vid...when i heard the intro I looked up to see what bass it was..sounded bloody great and the Ash finish looked amazing...how delighted was i to see it was the Mexican not the USA..... See Pete I think your right...badge snobbery at play there big time. Trying to convince yourself the US one sounds better....MIM won hands down for me.... would have been an interesting blindfold challenge ....

Ive worn bass finishes down on a fender Polly urethane bass it took ten years but it can happen but I can totally tell the difference between an ash body or alder body on fender basses I've had both and there's a difference

A good Sire V7 is as good as a good US Fender Jazz Bass but Sire's preamps are better than Fender's. Like in any brand you'll find good and not so good ones for the same model. The thing is that a Sire is so much cheaper. By the way, Nathan gigs with a Sire.
What they missed: The important difference is that the bridge pickup is farther back on the 70's models than on 60's models, which makes it sound different.
You can see the difference on Pete's 80's bass. By then they had moved the bridge pickup back to the 60's position.
OMG to my ears, the Mexican one sounded WAY better than the other two. My ears are cheap then. My order was Mex, then Squier, then USA.
The MIA sounded like it had richer mids and lower output. The MIM was a little bit scooped and the squire had quiet highs. I didn't like the white trim neck on the MIA, and the squire had less attractive wood.
I'd go for the MIM and upgrade the pickups to the MIA pickups.
What we call 70's jazz bass has one and only one main difference. It's bridge magnet was moved half of an inch toward bridge so it has different middle response. It was just few years somwhere in 70's.

The squier has a certain thick metalic quality that I adore, chunky sound, reminds me of the sampled bass parts in the music of the band Justice. The american fender is most likely a better balanced instrument but doesn’t get me as enthusiastic.
I actually have the Squire and honestly i dont think i have been more impressed with an instrument i have bought. sure it needed a setup, but so did my Les Paul. it sounds and plays awesome and really for the price increase for the next level up its just not worth it.
Allan Helmick I agree, I absolutely love my Squier VM 70s jazz bass, love the thick vintage lacquer and black block inlays and binding. I like the Squier VM stuff so much I also picked up the precision bass pj and the Jaguar special!!!

I have this squier classic vibe 70's jazz bass and it's good 👍but the pickups doesn't have the range in volume that the fender has and the wood quality is very different 👌
I got the squier, literally unplayable out of the box, had to tighten the truss rod. Lower the action. And then lower the pick ups. But now it’s perfect and I love it. Wouldn’t recommend to a beginner

Sire v3 or Squier 70’s?
The major difference in tone is the fact that the Fender has the wider, period accurate pickup spacing, whereas the Squier has the more normal 60s spacing. As the bridge pickup on the 70s Jazz is closer to the bridge, it has a clankier, more aggressive top end. Both basses are fantastic, just a little different.
Right 60s has a 3.6 inch spacing whereas 70s had 4 inch spacing (bridge pickup moved closer to saddles for brighter tone). Hence the Squier vintage modified 70s Jbass keeps the 3.6in spacing hence “modified” from the vintage spec
I got a Squire 70’s off of Craigslist for $175. It’s pretty cool, I just need to shim the neck and it’s good to go.
In a mix you could not tell it’s all about the build quality at that point
