@@Robertius the council can do what they like with a listed building if it suits them, but if you try to do anything with a listed building you own yourself you haven't got a chance in hell unless you grease the palms of a local Councillor under the table. Builders and building company's do it all the time, as the old saying goes 'it's not what you know it's who you know'. There is a lot of rich councillor's out there who didn't become so wealthy legitimately.

By renovations I presume you mean gutting the whole back garden shed and stripping away much of the property's identity. What's left is sort of a cursed monument to Fred's misfortune. With the 3 different wives I mean all of whom seemed to take advantage of the old bloke one way or another. And of course the illness which befell dear old Fred. If he saw what had become of his beloved steam workshop, the last of its kind in a lot of ways, he would really be quite saddened by the state its in. Its a tragedy for such a hard working man with the most astounding old time knowledge to have part of his legacy tarnished like that. At least his boys are carrying on his passion for steam, assuming they've still got hold of Betsy the roller.
