  • This is the only known footage of Nick Drake speaking anything more than a couple of words in a studio, this was recorded on a portable tape machine at 5am in the morning after a night of partying..the origonal footage is very poor as the tape had degraded badly but i have spent time and effort to enhance the footage to an acceptable standard.
Dedicated to the memory of a consumate Artist and excellent guitarist and songwriter, who met his death far to young in 1974,..I hope where ever you are Nick your still playing your Guitar.

His speaking voice is very much in keeping with his English upper class upbringing . Cambridge educated , Drake was a very private person who suffered with depression . His reluctance to perform live inhibited his work to be heard by a wider audience . I have all three of his albums . His final album , Pink Moon , is my favourite - mostly due to the stark , stripped bare , intimate nature of its songs .

I noticed that, too... and that "gentleness" is much appreciated. I think the only thing I don't like with many people's views is that Nick Drake songs should never be covered. I've heard simply gorgeous versions of many of his songs, and it makes Drake's short work seem even more amazing. When your music is covered by everyone from jazz to folk to rock to techno to orchestrational artists, you know there's a lot to those songs. Drake was very close to making that commercial sucess as guys like Van Morrison and Neil Young were back in the day. Maybe his shyness and anxiety didn't help with collaborating with other artists and producers? Thanx for the comment!

this recording was originaly done on a reel to reel which had recordings on both sides, they were stored in less than ideal conditions for many years, these were part of Nicks home recordings given by his family to the American guitarist Scott Appel some of which ended up as the bootleg "Tanworth in Arden" and has since been officially reissued under other titles.
the Radio chatter you can hear has come through from the other side of the tape which add a strange ethereal quality to the recording

@@mariehughes5516 You should consult a dictionary. Here's one of the definitions of literally "in effect : VIRTUALLY -used in an exaggerated way to emphasize a statement or description that is not literally true or possible". Moreover, it has been used that way for centuries, by the greatest writers even. Are you also surpised when "awesome" doesn't mean "inspires awe"? So, no: "literally the hottest guy" also means "he was really really hot figuratively speaking". Of course this requires the faculty of understanding context, and understanding the uses of terms like "literally" beyond just their etymology and a single simplistic definition of them. It has several, well documented in dictionaries, including being used for emphasis

You seem to be under 35, so I should understand that you probably grew up using common internet language of Millennials and Gen Z. If you look in a dictionary, the preferred uses are all at the top. If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the list, you’ll often find alternate and/or archaic uses that are offset in a way that shows this is not preferred. And here, you will often find contradictory definitions to the preferred use. Does this clear things up, or are you still upset about this?

Nice to hear him talk. He sounds very worldly. Hard to believe in today's crazy social media, this is all we get. It only adds to the mystique. He sounds very normal in every way. His music transfers so well to different idioms like jazz and folk (see some of the excellent covers of Nick's songs) that one feels that Drake was on the edge of that breakout commercial success, as guys like Neil Young had in the West.

      @rpidly4915 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Ok I looked online and found a full transcription! This video doesn't actually have the entire audio, it's about a minute longer.
Emm...good evening...or should I say good morning? The time is twenty-five to five
And I've been sitting here for some time now,
      Actually I
After a party which I quite enjoyed, but you know it
One has one reservations when one has quite enjoyed oneself,
But one has to make reservations because, uh,
      The people were particularly interesting.
In fact, there weren't as many people there as I expected there to be,
      It was, I thought...you know,
The Maynard-Mitchells have a big big do
In fact there weren't nearly as many as one might have thought,
Which was, which was a pity.
In fact, I think I must have drunk rather a lot
(Or although it seemed so at the time I felt myself quite sober)
But when I leapt into the car to drive home
      After my merry abandon
I found the task extremely difficult!
      And it was extremely fortunate
That, um, there was nothing else on the road because, looking back at it,
I seem to remember I had a mental brainstorm
(Well, I didn't realise at the time)
And I think I drove the whole way home on the righthand side of the road!
Which is something of course which comes from driving in France too much,
Which is what I've been doing recently,
As you probably know, driving in France, you know.
And in moments of stress such as was this journey home,
One forgets so easily- the lies, the truth and the pain.
And so I'm wavering from the point
What I was trying to say...is uhm,
When I sat here I had an extremely pleasant time on the piano, actually
I was playing the piano and sort of singing,
And I rather fear I might have kept people awake upstairs
One hopes not, but it was pleasant, and it's extremely pleasant sitting here now,
Because I think there is something extraordinarily nice
About seeing the dawn up before one goes to bed,
Because there's something uncanny about it
When it suddenly becomes light, because one connects darkness with going to bed,
Surely... um, and when one is still up when it becomes light,
And it's a new day, and you still haven't gone to bed to sleep
(Because the night equals sleep, so easily)
And when one is still up when the new day begins
It is something of an intriguing experience, I always find.
I can look out of the window now, and that tree over there is green,
Whereas before one goes to bed,
Just when one goes to bed, that tree should be black, surely!
Everything should be black before one goes to bed,
But that is surely the essence of the Romantic!
Anyway, I think I'm straying from the point.
I should probably stop talking now
Because, um, if I don't I shall start sort of relating on life histories and things,
      Which will be frightfully tedious.
So it's here that I'll sort of say goodnight, you know...
      Goodnight!

it might be "Tanworth in Arden" you are referring to which is the first on many Nick Bootlegs from the 90's and comes from the same set of tapes that were given to Scott Appell by Nicks parents, however some of the tapes went missing ? the recording you hear above is from one of those reel to reel tapes that Nick made in his bedroom..all the tracks are covers of Bert Janch, John Renborne, Jackson C Frank et al, so are nearly all in the Folk Blues style..they were all recorded before Nick had developed his own style but certainly show his blossoming virtuosity on the guitar...however they are not live "as being recorded in front of an audience"
these missing tapes have have come to light on various bootlegs over the years

..Cheers.....You don't have to answer this question if you don't want to, but how did the tape come into your possession in the first place?....I'm sure somebody out there could do a clean up job on the tape....Maybe I'm going thru a melancholy phase or maybe it's impending Winter, but I can't stop listening to Nick Drake these days.....Cheers!!....

It's difficult to read him and what he music meant, when you can't hear his thoughts, that's why I think these recordings are so important. Surely his sister must have some footage of him, if not I wonder if she's heard this, she'll have forgotten his voice by now.

Nick Drake is in my opinion the Daniel Day Lewis of music. There will never be anybody like him. I am a huge fan of his. There is very little known about him and I must say I'm curious too as to where the tape came from? Who made the recording? Was it from a radio broadcast or?

    • @Adibarum
      @Adibarum  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Keith
this home recording was done by Nick himself on an 8 track, he had in his bedroom, on the other side of the tape him or someone else i suspect had taped a lot of MOR Music..which years later due to the way the tape had been stored in the attic at Far leys the music had bled through onto the recording that Nick had done shortly after returning from Aix in France so that makes this recording dated to before Nick had made any of his records so maybe 1968

+Marcus Vinnas Um, good evening...or should I say, good morning. The time is twenty-five to five, and I've been sitting here for some time now, actually...(?) from a party which I quite enjoyed, but you know, it's... One has one's reservations when one has quite enjoyed oneself, but one has to make reservations because, um, the people were particularly interesting. In fact, there wasn't as many people there as I expected there to be, it was, I thought...you know, the Maynard-Mitchells have a big, big 'do', in fact there weren't nearly as many as one might have thought, which was, which was a pity.
In fact, I think I must have drunk a lot, or although it seemed so, at the time I felt myself quite sober, but when I leapt into the car to drive home, after my merry abandon, I found the task extremely difficult. And it was extremely fortunate that, um, there was nothing else on the road because, looking back at it, I seem to remember I had a mental brainstorm, and I didn't realise at the time, and I think I drove the whole way home on the righthand side of the road...which is something, of course, which comes from driving in France too much, which is what I've been doing recently, as you probably know...driving in France, you know. And in moments of stress, such as was this journey home, one forgets so easily, the lies, the truth and the pain...and so I'm wavering from the point...
What I was trying to say...um, when I sat here I had an extremely pleasant time on the piano actually. I was playing the piano and sort of singing, and I rather fear I may have kept people awake upstairs...one hopes not, but it was pleasant, and it's extremely pleasant sitting here now, because I think there is something extraordinarily nice about seeing the dawn up before one goes to bed, because there's something uncanny about it, when it suddenly becomes light, because one connects darkness with going to bed, surely...um, and when one is still up when it becomes light, and it's a new day, and you still haven't gone to bed, to sleep, because the night equals sleep, so easily, and when one is still up when the new day begins, it is something of an (achieved?) experience, I always find.
I can look out of the window now, and that tree over there is green, whereas before one goes to bed, just when one goes to bed, that tree should be black, surely. Everything should be black before one goes to bed, but that is surely the essence of the romantic.
Anyway, I think I'm straying from the point. I shall probably stop now because, um, if I don't I shall start sort of surrealating on life histories and things, which will be frightfully tedious. So it's here that I'll sort of say good night, you know... Good night.

    • @routeoz02
      @routeoz02 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Goodnight and god bless, Nick; whatever "god" is or isn't. And, Evan B, thanks for transcribing. I could hear Nick, but reading the words is better because, well, i'm more of a reading word man than a speaking word man, and his words, in "print", are something of an addition to literature, given to us from a narrow slice of his life.

"The lies the truth and the pain" interesting I wonder what he was referring to. I can't help wondering if he had a secret lover that he left behind and in those days couldn't keep contact with, like we can these days, I wonder if he was gay and couldn't understand what was going on with himself, perhaps he longed for his partner. He wasn't always as withdrawn as he was in the years leading up to his death. His sister described him as her soul mate, I wonder what she knows.
