He’s proving himself to be a great conductor. His past 4 years (2013 - ) with Stavanger Orchestra have been a success. His American debut was in June of 2017 with The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, collaborating with Mr. P. Zuckerman in the Beethoven Violin Concerto. Excellent reviews. So Vásquez’s instincts at this early stage (2009) of his career are phenomenal. People who quibble about his “fast” tempos might listen to it again and hear how the singers benefit. He doesn’t drag before the 3 final crucial climactic moments and always keeps the music moving forward. The result is one of the very few live performances where the conductor is able to stretch the climaxes yet still have ALL of the soprano choristers dead center on the high Bb’s, contributing to a brilliant finale. The orchestra alone cannot, cannot, cannot carry the climax of this symphony. Vásquez seems to understand what singing voices are NOT capable of doing. If you wear out the singers, the entire piece will fail. For this young man to be able to judge that so perfectly at the finale of a beloved symphony that is exhausting to conduct, from memory, in a live performance, at this stage of his career is grounds for praise and admiration. His reading of the Resurrection Symphony is now at the top of my list with Mr Rattle’s. It’s thrilling, moving, honest, and the reaction of the audience (and orchestra itself!) speaks volumes. He’s also a modest, kind, totally non-egocentric human being. The music world needs him badly.
People! People! People! Cut this young genius some slack, won't you? Must you compel him to suffer, as the evil critics and audiences of Vienna did to Mahler? This kid is but 25 years old, for God's sake... AND he MEMORIZED this entire score...AND he replaced Dudamel as the conductor of this HIGHLY skilled orchestra! But yes, the audience would benefit from a bit of education. This young man's interpretation is MAHLERVOUS! Gustav would most certainly ENCOURAGE young Christian! BRAVO!
Young man, and a young man's reading, including the tempi -- very moving, like first sex in first true love. I liked it a lot. The acid test he passed with flying colors -- if the conductor is not bellowing out "Auferstehen! Ja, auferstehen!" with the chorus at the top of his lungs, he's just not into it. Mahler's birthday today, and I am roaming around listening to various readings of this finale to celebrate. Delighted I found this one -- all praise to TH-cam.
Tears.... It's like being inside of joy listening to this... Being openly acknowledged and acquitted by Christ at the last Day and raised up in glory to be fully blessed in the full enjoying of the Triune God to all eternity
Don't get me wrong, I like the Bernstein tempo a lot as well, but the tempo in this is WAY better for wind players, the high brass could actually hold out the phrases (particularly at 2:55 ). The crescendo in Vasquez's interpretation is much more dramatic because although it doesn't stay there for as long as Bernstein's, it's a much fuller sound. Amazing performance all around.
Kyle, the same could be said of how his tempos affect the chorus as well as the high brass. They (especially the sopranos) can DELIVER big time at the climaxes because he doesn’t wear out their voices by dragging.
Yes! You're absolutely right. Listen to the sound of the choir on that downbeat after the crescendo too. That's a true, meaty, full throated fff moment there and it is glorious. You can actually hear the basses and tenors singing their hearts out.
Where in most performances the bells in the final bars seldom make themselves heard over the din of the orchestra, here they really toll out loud in exaltation of live anew. Superb performance from everyone and the orchestra plays with real class, in fact better than some of their illustrious counterparts (and well paid at that!) of the top league! Muchisimas gracias!
Vasquez reminds of my high school football coach... he didn't care if you made mistakes as long as you were being intense about it! This gives me gooseflesh every time I hear it
Yes, a little hurried. But I think this guy will be a great Mahlerian. We need some - we have Rattle (and Mark Elder - he has the potential) I really like this posting. A great and grand ending to Mahler 2. Tears? Oh yes!
Maestro Vasquez is on the road of musical greatness; however, the similarities with Dudamel comes from the training. His training is top class. In Stavagner, Norway, he will find his true voice as he matures. The world is fortunate to have a country like Venezuela that supports music of the highest quality.
Magda Nieves
Bravo Maestro !!!
Don't know what they're feeding them in Venezuela, but wow, like Dudamel before him, this kid has some chops. Love both the youthful passion and technical proficiency. Excellent stuff!
This music makes close my eyes, bow down and feel that my soul is returning to the Creator.
This epic work of musical wonder was brilliantly executed by Maestro Vasquez. Thank you for posting the entire opus. I hope that you come to San Francisco, California and conduct our syphony. I'll be there.
YO HE CANTADO ESTA OBRA CON CHRISTIAN YA NI SE NI CUANTAS VECES,PERO CADA VEZ Q LA DIRIGE SIEMPRE LE IMPRIME MAS ENERGIA Q LA VEZ ANTERIOR,ASI ES EL....................
Dear sir and musicians, thank you for abandoning yourself to the music and letting it be performed with the greatest passion. Let people say what they want to say - and I'm just in beginning conducting, so what do I know? - but thank you for giving it your all and conducting and performing this piece in a way that allowed nothing to be held back.
Last night, I saw and heard in the San Francisco Symphony, perform this same Mahler 2. I can say with certainty that this performance was superior to Michael Tilson Thomas, Grammy performance of Mahler. Maestro Thomas was flipping through the score whereas Maestro Vasquez memorized the score. Maestro Vasquez is destined to become a great conductor. He needs to be more in touch with his inner voice. BRAVO!!!
¡Maravilloso!
That is impossible. Its a coincidence; otherwise he'd be up for an Oscar. These Venezuelans are on to something really big. For classical music, Caracas rivals Berlin and London for sheer quality of music.
@padredemishijos12 Yep, I do agree that there's definitely a place for such a high-octane Mahler 2. Interesting, the Pentacostal church comparison. It seems to be the right spirit for such a work, instead of the normal "refined" straight-laced preference which sometimes seems to be inexplicably present among classical music snobs.
Why so negative words against Christian. The conducting is a kind of profession where the imitation is a very important part of the formation, and the final perfection comes with the mature. Maybe sometimes he looks like Bernstein, Abbado, Abreu and Dudamel, but only him and his future experiences will set his own way to conduct. And I have to add that he has 2 very important qualities, he is very accesible and modest and if you can watch those you are blind. Try to go beyond. Felicidades Amigo
@physphilmusic I agree with your comment, and I think the histrionics works. I saw Michael Tilson Thomas and the SF Symphony Orchestra perform this, and without the histrionics, I was not spiritually uplifted. There is a rivival quality that one gets in Pentacostal Churches that Maestro Vasquez succeeds in replicating. Considering the theme, the histrionics is appropriate in this piece, Mahler's Second.
This is my kind of conductor. The brass is blowing it's guts out and he's asking for more.
I would love to have made this comment.
2:58 the climax of mankind.
Truthfully this guy's passion is how we feel internally listening. At least for me.
2:47 the man is completely extatic .... that is exactly the reason why Mahler composed such a music .
The symphony is the entire world. If the conductor is not giving everything, then he's not conducting. Bravo.
This is the music that gets me through life when things get really rough

That last note was out of this world..cannot get enough of this performance.

Simply one of the most powerful finale's ever written. Tears, chills, sheer audible bliss!
It just blows my mind everytime I see this video. He has memorized the score, so he really knows this piece by heart. Just fantastic!
This is breathtaking. I can't imagine a dearer human hope than the Resurrection.
Literally crying right now.

One of best I have heard and seen...love this conductor..he is truly a Mahler genius
The passion...!!!! Thats the most important thing i want to see in a conductor. Bravo
The Organ is much louder than usual and I love it!
Sudamerica adelante!!
La mia preferita, delle sinfonia di Malher. Stupenda.
I just love how he has poured himself into this music as well as the orchestra and choir. It is powerful to watch.
Wow. Such an incredible performance, led by an exceptional conductor. So, so good. Goosebumps up and down my arms.

I like Bernstein's tempo more

Abaddo and the Lucerne are the best, imo. He has a way of making every section play in perfect harmony with each other

Astounding! This is brilliant, and the musicians are so young. The playing, singing, and conducting are all just marvelous. Wonderful performance!

Exuberance, enhanced by youthful daring, makes this a stirring performance!!! Bravo, Vasquez!!!
Superb Superb Superb ❤️

Beatific, beautiful, triumphant

Maestro Christian, Simplememte......Magnificente!!!
A great performance and orchestra, and I don't care whatever anyone says. The power is electric
One year later and I am still addicted to this!
Absolutamente genial. Mahler se habría sentido orgulloso.
It just takes my breath away. Me quita mi aliento.
Undoubtedly, this was the template for Bradley Cooper's rendition of the same piece in the Leonard Bernstein biopic. Such passion. A thrill to watch.
He is marvelous. I'm in love with him!
3:04 Bass drops before they were mainstream
FANTASTICO.

this will be in recommended someday @@
Damn good. Better than most professional orchestras in the U. S. A. and Europe.
I'm in love.
Lloro
Best of all!

And God made man a LITTLE lower than the angels...and breathed His own Spirit into him!!! Thanks be to God!!!
Bravo.

Made for ears of the God
This is just awesome. Who needs aerobics or cardio? I'd love to know how many calories Christian burned conducting this.
This tempo works.
Genius.
Oh well, genius of mahler, yes, das ist sicher
excelente
totally agree with you Vasquez could become a real real great conductor if he doesn't imitate Dudamel
whoa
Brovo!
