I made a charcoal grill and just a cup of charcoal will boil one litre of water. The magic is the use of a 500 ml solid copper vase. I think the bulb shape plus the conductivity of copper helps.
Also the bonus is that soot tends to wipe off very easily when you use wood. 500 ml takes 8-9 minutes depending on the type of charcoal and the weather.
The copper vase is worth the extra weight
Hi Martin. Another great video!! I'm not sure I'd pay that much. Looks a great bit of kit I suppose I'm old school I use the trangia burner and chop and change the pots I use. Speed not a big thing for me I always have a stove of some description with me but then decide I'm going to try a small fire.

Cheers Paddy. I hear you pal. A lot of money for an alcohol stove. I can see why thou as the amount of work that went into it. I have another one of their stoves that costs €18 and it uses the same technology, and can store fuel in it. Will have that up soon. I'm like you. I have a different stove for all occasions 😄. A few questions now you have been (presumably) using this unit for 6 months or so......How much fuel do you need to boil 300 ml of water from cold? How well does it simmer? how does it simmer for a long slow cook? How do you/they justify the cost? Why is it better than an Evernew Alcohol burner which costs less, is lighter (made of ti.), uses no more alcohol and can be used to simmer.....and...what is the 'Advanced' design...it works on a tried and tested principal of the Trangia stove, and really has nothing new, even the 'vortex' flame is old hat. Be interesting to see your thoughts on these points.
On the Trangia burner, the flame naturally centres once it's up to temperature. It does that without sophisticated angled jets and a vortex. I have 3 Trangia burners and they all do this. Of course, however centred the flame is, it will spread once it hits the bottom of the pot. I like the Trangia integrated system: burner, lid (to conserve fuel between uses), simmer ring, pans, lid, all in one. For a day, you can put fuel in the burner, put the lid on and not have to carry fuel separately.
I hear you. I just love innovation and engineering. . I have a second stove by Goshawk and it's the same cost as the tringia with a lid as well to store fuel. Very impressive. Filming it at the moment. I love the simmer functionality of the tringia.
Just got mine, fief it up, staggeringly quick to boil my water, but then it occurred to me, how do I put the thing out? I used a damp cloth in the end, gonna cut up a disc of silicone later try that, but may I ask what you’ve used to extinguish it? Many thanks, great vid

I can tell simply by looking at the inferno this monstrosity unleashes that it will cost you a fortune in fuel over its lifetime. Imagine having a Mclaren for a daily driver. Cool, but very, very profligate

Looks like a nice stove, and I like the built-in windshield. Is there a lid to snuff it out like on the trangia? Otherwise, I can see a lot of fuel being wasted
Unfortunately not but the second stove they gave me can store fuel. I have small bottles that measure what I need.
The windshield needs to be close fitting around the pot, and to come up close to or above the lip. Designs like this new goshawk one are an evolutionary dead end.
And honestly, who cares what angle the jets are at?? 🙃

Impressed for an alcohol stove but using the evernew 600 pan and the vesuv 600 windshield theres only a few seconds between them . By the way ts not Goosehawk...its GOS Hawk as in the bird Goshawk :)

Looks smart, however all these spirit stoves are just too expensive to run compared to gas.
I always considered them cheaper to run but I could be wrong! 2 litres of bio fuel from places like B&Q are around 7-8 pounds. I prefer alcohol for 2 reasons though, first being I feel bad about all the waste involved in using gas canisters (I should really get an adapter to refill them) and second is I always know exactly how much fuel I have with me, with canisters I always worry there isn't as much as I think in them! Both types of stove have their place for sure though
Yep I hear you. For multi day trips I'd us Gas. I have an adapter also. They are convenient but it's all preference really. I really like the simplicity of the alcohol stoves. 🙂 What Gear burner do you have?
Hey Alex. They are cheaper to run and as you said.. the gat canister waste ain't good. I have an adapter and buy the large canisters. Very handy. But for me it's alcohol stoves all the way.
@@alexp2398 Yes B&Q its £8 but the Spirit stoves are very thirsty. If you notice all these people who say they use a small bottle of fuel and it lasts for several days are only boiling up about twice a day, and when they claim to cook on them are actually just warming stuff up..I like to cook a full breky and then have about 3 cups of tea. Later on I have a hot drink with my food again and a cup of coffee mid afternoon. A couple of hot drinks at bedtime..Doing this over 3 days I use less than half a small gas can, using bio I used over 2 litres, plus you have to keep topping up the stove, and 2 litres weigh 2 kg. However I do use a Trangia storm set up with a 3rd party gas adapter occasionally .
@@Chris66able ah yeah definitely then! I'm one of those people boiling water 2 or 3 times a day! Can get away with 100-200ml of fuel for the trip, with your heavy use gas definitely seems like the way forward

Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol, is the simplest alcohol in terms of molecular structure, but it is not commonly used for fuel or consumption due to its toxic nature. Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) is the type of alcohol typically used as a fuel source in alcohol stoves, and it is commonly found in products like denatured alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, and rubbing alcohol.
In terms of energy density or calorific value, ethanol (ethyl alcohol) provides approximately 29.7 megajoules per liter (MJ/L) or about 21,100 BTUs per pound. It is a widely used and efficient alcohol fuel for camping stoves and other applications.
So, to answer your question, among the alcohols used for fuel, ethanol has one of the highest calorific values. However, it's important to note that other factors, such as stove design and combustion efficiency, also play a role in how effectively the fuel is utilized for cooking or heating.
@@soletrail I think a lot of alcohol stoves need a throttle. You don't only boil water. You need to simmer quite a lot. You would also save fuel

@@soletrail Isopropyl is not ethanol at all. It has the highest energy density compared to meth or eth, but usually has trouble combusting completely, which results in a sooty flame and pots. The vortex flame may help with that, though...need experiments.

Yep it's expensive, great engineering and craftsmanship I must say but yep... I agree. 🙂
I use a stove which suits my needs, I do not alter my needs to suit the stove. If at home I do not limit how many hot drinks I have or if I have a hot snack, then why would I use a stove that limits me when camping. If anything I like to have an extra drink especially at night, or in winter..If you are limiting your normal consumption of hot food and drink because of your stove and fuel, then you have got a rubbish stove !
You make a great point! It's important to choose a stove that suits your needs and camping style, rather than adjusting your preferences to fit the stove. Camping should be about enjoying the experience, including your hot drinks and meals. If your stove isn't allowing you to do that, it might be time to consider a different one. After all, a good stove should enhance your outdoor experience, not limit it. Happy camping! 🏕️🔥
All workable solutions are compromises. If you're in the bush, you're limited by what you can carry, both in terms of weight and size. That's why your camping stove can't be compared to a kitchen stove. Find what meets your particular needs best and use it. On winter trips I might bring a paraffin stove to make lots of hot drinks but that same stove won't be part of a warm weather kit.
