    One of the absolutely best ever British tele series. I am so taken by the scene where Art Malik speaks out about how his character feels about India. It is most moving. And sad.

    What an amazing production. I watched this as a teen in the 80s and now watching it again in my 50s, with mature wide open eyes, much more aware of the subtext. I really only recall Merrick’s character. I felt his pain back then. Thank you for uploading.

    Yes. Thanks so much for uploading this incredible series. I think it is one of the great, profound epics of English television. I too saw it when it first came out; I was in my mid-thirties. Eventually I found the DVD set on sale. I've watched it many times over the years. I get something new from it or another detail falls into place every time I watch it. Perhaps I've learned more about India between viewings; or about the English. They are still so capable of such class distinctions and racial prejudice. But this version you've uploaded is absolutely pristine! I've never seen the series with such sharp images and brilliant colors. Truly pulls you into the action.

    The absolute best PBS series. Among Indophiles and Anglophiles nothing got done on the evenings this was shown. On at 8 and 10 pm. Even when the Indian Music Circle had concerts, people left early. It was a like a sacrament, the loyalty was so high! The best!

      Thelsreal: I agree. It's a fantastic piece of drama, but, if you're a lower middle class English bloke, like me, it's, incredibly offensive. All the jolly good, decent folk are rich, overpriviliged ex-public school kids and the nasties are lower class grammar school chaps like Ronald and the character portrayed by Warren Clark (Sophie?). To my peers it's incredibly offensive.

    I was very young when I watched this series in the states. I was not famiiar with the books at all. I remember being confused in that the first two episodes were about Daphne Manners. Then her storyline just vanished and the second storyline was all about the Laytons. It wasn't until a decade later that I realized the series covered just part of a series of novels. I really liked the first two episodes. I did like the rest of the series as well but was take the most with the first two. Thank you for posting these episodes.

      Shane you can listen to the serialisation of the whole set of books right now, on Radio 4 ... but maybe only if you're in the UK. Not sure, but it was recorded in 2007/8. You can get the Jewel in the Crown on audible.co.uk. -- 21 hours worth, for the one book. The others haven't been recorded as yet.

    I'm currently rereading the books on which this this wonderful series was based: The Raj Quartet novels by Paul Scott. If you can get hold of them, I can't recommend them more highly. The two great and time - resisting virtues of The Raj Quartet novels - which are also embodied in the series - are, first, the extraordinary range of characters, and, second, their powerful description of the last days of British India, which have now slipped quietly away into history. It seems strange that everything that's so skilfully portrayed in the books and in the series actually took place less than 100 years ago, during WWII.

I think I would give anything to be able to write like Paul Scott, he just describes everything so well, doesn't he? Is 'The Tower of Silence' the final book in the series? That's the one in which poor Miss Batchelor is accused by Mrs Layton of making lesbian advances towards her daughters, isn't it? Accusations that are completely untrue, of course. Have I got the right book? What do you think of the books from a German perspective, if you don't mind me asking ? Love from Amanda in Australia

      Margaret Farquhar: it's certainly an excellent series, but, to someone, like myself who was brought up in a lower middle-class setting, the demonisation of the grammar school boy, Ronald, is offensive. This is especially so, given that all the decent folk are over-proviliged, smug, ex private school kids. The portrayal of working class guy, Sophie as a pantomime villain is simply grotesque. This series only ages well if you're from a particular background.

      @@philjamieson5572 I am American so maybe I got it wrong. But to my eyes, all the young white Englishmen (except Daphne) were portrayed as shallow, ill-mannered young people dependent on their unearned privileged place in society. I felt Sophie was a homosexual with a wicked sense of humor using subversion to tweak uptight Englishmen. Merrick and Hari were two faces of the same coin, both tragic figures whose educations were at odds with their backgrounds so both were unable to fit into British society anywhere. I did not see lower class Britons as being portrayed in patronising ways. Indeed, Scott himself came from a similar background due to his father's financial difficulties. I've seen the whole series and read all four novels.

      @4Topwood agreed. I am a non-white person from a former British colony and definitely not into shows that glamourise colonisation and the whole British Raj thing. 30:13 Too bad Merrick didn't go after Daphne's hospital coworker instead of Daphne, since she thought more like he did, and seemed to think Daphne was lucky he liked her, but then again he wanted the Manners' social status.

    • @4Topwood
      @4Topwood 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I am not sure Merrick's interest in Daphne was due primarily to her status as a relation of Lady Manners. I think it had to do more with her being alone in the world (as far as having no immediate family) and therefore more vulnerable. Also, she was receptive to experiences outside the very narrow scope of her class, unlike the other British young people in her social circle (all of whom were so shallow). There was more to Merrick than his overwhelming feelings of social inferiority and repressed homosexuality. That's what makes him so fascinating. His darkness and his depth.

      @@4Topwood
      You put that perfectly Ann, I've always wondered about Merrick's suppressed homosexuality, but there is a lot more to him than that. He is a very dark and dangerous character, whose darkness always seems to be simmering just below the surface. Do you think, as I do, that Merrick is really attracted to Hari Kumar, not to Daphne? You noticed that Ronald Merrick doesn't take any real interest in Daphne until he sees her talking to Hari Kumar. By the way, wasn't Tim Piggott Smith perfect in his role as Ronald Merrick? He seems to have completely understood Merrick and who he was. I remember seeing this series on TV, here in Australia, back in the very early 1980's when I was only 11 or 12. So it's very different seeing it now, at the age of 53. I was worried that I would find it outdated now, but it's not at all. The cast and the acting are so good that the series transcends time. Thank you for sharing your comment, what you wrote really made me think about Merrick's character. Love from Amanda in Melbourne, Australia

      Yes, I think you nailed it. Merrick takes an interest in Kumar at the first meeting. We could almost say he "selects" him. The when he realizes Daphne knows Kumar, that seals the deal. It is then he begins to pursue Daphne. (Remember, Merrick and Daphne are already what I would call "nodding acquaintances". She passes his truck carrying Kumar to headquarters and waves at Merrick. But Merrick only becomes interested in her later--when Kumar enters the picture.)
      Tim Piggot-Smith's portrayal of Merrick was brilliant! And he also had a terrific range, able to play characters quite different from Merrick. Have you seen the Midsomer Murders episode, "Days of Misrule"? He's excellent in it. We lost him much too soon. RIP.

    The Undivided Subcontinent Of India before the division and partition of India into two separate nations based on religion based politics was indeed the undisputed Jewel In The Crown Of The Powerful British Empire . The Sun Never Sets On The British Empire was the famous slogan of those times when the undivided India was under the British Empire Control before the Independence of India in 1947 and the creation of a new democratic republic of India governed by the people of India with the newly found joys of complete and total freedom from the British Rule Of Law in India . Though the ugly creation of Muslim religion based Pakistan and the bloody partition Of India into two separate nations totally ruined the joys and pleasures of Freedom forever for the two nations which became sworn enemies of each other till death do us part . That was 1947 . This is August 2022 now . But we still remember the past history of India . The Jewel In The British Crown India .

    I liked this epic series, but still find the characterizations annoying. The priviliged, ex-public boys and girls are the trustworthy, noble sort of British and the ex-grammar school boy is the nasty, perverted, devious kind.

    • @kahkah1986
      @kahkah1986 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Up to a point I agree, although if you look closely the public school chaps and chapesses are complacent and enabling, with a certainty that bleeds into arrogance. This is a long series, but almost all the characters get punished for their hubris eventually, especially people like Hari and Daphne, even if their story is the most sympathetic.
      I agree though, you are being set up to root for the lovely upper classes, when in reality most people 'beneath' them were treated with contempt. They farmed out a lot of the real work of subjugation to poorer people with fewer prospects like Merrick, taking the credit for their (heavily qualified) successes from illegal/ corrupt methods, then acting surprised when they are caught out and try and cover it up.

    • @williamrees6662
      @williamrees6662 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Without wishing to give offence, I think you may have missed the point. The book on which this is based, and the series itself, largely pin Merrick’s unfortunate and unhappy personality on a deep seated inferiority caused precisely by the elitism he encounters in India and in the UK. It turns him into a resentful, insane, dangerous and racist pervert, whilst the upper class, and largely useless, colonialists, who have turned him into what he is, rely desperately on his courage, resourcefulness and intelligence to run their empire for them, all the while despising him.
      What makes Merrick such a tragic figure in my view is that he is, like Hari, caught in the middle of a system. If he could see beyond his own class and race privilege in India, he would see that he is only different to the Indians in his utility to the ruling class, but he can’t, he won’t, and that contradiction destroys him.

      Agreed. Don't forget that another thing that was afflicting him was that he was struggling with his homosexuality, so he had two reasons to be hostile to the system which was doubly discrimatory towards him.
