  • Yerranderie is a former silver-mining town deep in the Blue Mountains south-west of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
The town is accessed by a 60-km long rough, gravel road from a western entrance to Blue Mountains National Park; best suited to 4X4 vehicles.
There are no services at Yerranderie apart from a camping area with toilets and showers and short term accommodation in some of the old township buildings.
Several old buildings and historic sites remain in two separate townships; being the Private Township and Government Township.
There are also a number of mines in the area which can be accessed by walking tracks.
Along the way, you will pass an interesting stone hut at the Mount Werong Camping Area; another former mining area.

Nice one . Me and a mate walked from Katoomba out narrowneck up the Cowmong river to Yerranderie in 1997 . We ended up getting evacuated out by the RFS to picton railway station . was huge bushfires out there that year . The drive from Yerranderie to Picton is the most spectacular drive I have ever been on in the Blue mtns . few people get to see . its closed to the public

Heard from the caretaker that the p.o lodge is apparently haunted, never stayed in there though.

The hut at Mt Werong is known as "Possums Hut" the knick name of the fellow who built it and lived there. It was supposed to be built on the private block in the NP (which is located to the left across the small track) however he built it on the wrong block. The actual private block was eventually purchased by the National Parks. It's maintenance was carried out by the inmates at the Oberon Correctional centre (Young Offenders) which closed in late 2022.

Thanks for that interesting bit of info. Miscalculation perhaps?

    *FEBRUARY 2023 UPDATE:* Track condition.
When I visited Yerranderie in February 2022, the Colong Stock Route was in near excellent condition and easily handled by a standard 4X4 vehicle. How things change. The following is a report from February 2023.
_"The condition of the Oberon Colong Stock Route can vary considerably. As at the 22nd of February 2023 it is rough, wet and slippery. You should get an up to date assessment of the road before heading to Yerranderie._
_The photos (see link below) were taken on the 22nd of February 2023 after rain showers and storms in preceding weeks. Please look carefully and be sure that your vehicle and your driving skills can handle these sort of conditions. The potholes can be deep and when filled with water hard to tell how deep they are. On sunny days the potholes can hide in the tree shadows. Hit them at any speed and you will do some damage. There are also now some deep washouts across the road and if you don’t have high enough clearance you may need a shovel to fill in a track across them. If you don’t have high clearance make sure you keep one set of wheels on the highest part of the road. Most of the road is only safe at 20-30 kph with many spots requiring a slow walking pace._
_There is 64 kilometres of dirt road and 3 significant creek crossings at the eastern end. You have to be unlucky but there can be trees down across the road. Usually after a storm or windy weather. If you have a chainsaw….. bring it with you. Keep an eye on the BOM Sydney rain radar and forecasts in the days leading up to your arrival._
_Note that National Parks require an online booking. If the campgrounds and accommodation are full or closed, you may get turned around if you turn up without one!"_

    *APRIL 2023 UPDATE* - A Game Changer. Mobile phone coverage at Yerranderie will be available in April 2023;
*MAY 2023 FURTHER UPDATE* - Mobile phone coverage has limited functionality and may be weak. Don't rely on it at this stage.
    ------------------
The following has been copied from the Yerranderie Discussion Group (Facebook):
    "WORK ON MOBILE CELL RECOMMENCED.
The crew is back working on the cell installation and say it should be finished by the end of the week.
When you are in Yerranderie, you will soon be able to take phone calls from work and your children wanting to borrow money from you.
    That's progress!"

The office safe in the Court House at Camden was removed from the old Court House at Yerranderie. I do not know if it still there as I understand the Court House at Camden is unstaffed these days.

Thanks for that. It's always interesting to know how things move around. If it is closed, I am sure local history lovers will look after its wellbeing.
