      You should! I had the same thought recently and a friend told me I should go for it! A week later I booked a ticket with my brother and our friend and we road tripped up the east coast searching for and photographing wildlife. It is one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had!
      It wasn't easy to schedule and financially it was a stretch but we made it work. So often we talk ourselves out of doing things but if you can find that small gap in your life where you can squeeze in an adventure, you should do it. If you have any questions or want recommendations, please let me know!
      Here is a dorky video my brother recorded while we were heading to the atherton tablelands in N. Queensland to look for Tree Kangaroos, Platypus, and a wide variety of bird species. I'm sitting in the back with the binocs strapped in case I need to ID a bird on the road lol. Get outside, have fun, and be goofy. You'll enjoy it. th-cam.com/video/FeNoZlGlXeI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=P27pupSTNEeUUHbH

    The fact you show your crops and edits over the raw full image is amazing. Shows at what extend some have to be cropped in but still yield great image quality.

    Wow! I'd call that a Full Hand of Crakes in just one sitting (laying)! Spotted & Plain, Baillon's, Buff-banded plus the Turbo-chook! Also: they are beautiful birds, albeit not parrot/robin-colourful...
    A lovely moring out and about, thanks for letting us tag along, digitally. 🙂

      Thanks Pia, yes, I think they are beautiful too but I know many people overlook them. This was by far the most success I have ever had with Crakes as they are usually much harder to find and see. Yes, the 500 is not a light lens to cart around. Cheers, Duade

    Awesome mate.
    You got the trifecta of crakes and the banded rail as well.
    The poor old spotless crake seldom looks his or her best in direct light. Overcast or muted light brings the blue out and contrasts better with their red eye.
    I have never seen so many crakes in one spot before, it was crake heaven lol

    I loved the video, Duade. In a few moments, I will be going out with my R5 and EF 600 f4, looking for Red Foxes in their Winter coats. Like you, I love the IQ of the big primes. I’ve had good luck carrying a monopod to help me with the weight of the rig. For me, it’s a good compromise. Not as steady as a tripod,, but easier to carry and walk about. It makes it so much easier to hold the camera when a cooperative subject gives me a few poses over a few minutes.

    Wow, you really lucked out with the crakes and rail! Such great shots you got. Of the similar species where I live in Massachusetts, you're lucky to see one bird, let alone a whole flock! The parrots were great, too! I have the EF 600mk2 and R5, and that thing is an even bigger beast than yours. I need a monopod to use it for more than a few minutes. I had maybe 20 minutes in the rain with a sora at a local community garden recently and was pretty stoked to get some awesome shots.

    Great video Duade. 🙏 I stumbled onto Kinnairds wetland in October this year on a trip to Shepparton. It's a terrific place. Most of where you were shooting from was under water when I was there, some of the tracks were fully flooded. Awesome to see so many crakes! Needless to say I didn't see any LOL. Cussen Park in Tatura is also great for crakes if you get that far west, I saw two Spotless and one Baillon's there. 👍

    Your field trips really are amazing. So that’s an idea for a future video. Given two weeks, where in your vast country would you go for a first time visitor. Assume it’s about wildlife photography, but with an emphasis on birds. I would love to photograph the Superb Fairy Wren, your Parrots and Rosellas, but also your kangaroos and that adorable antechinus. Better yet, lead a tour. I’d sign up in 2025 (I have 5 trips scheduled already in 2024).

    • @Duade
      @Duade  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      G'day, thanks, best bang for buck would be Darwin and Kakadu in the Northern Terroritory, just so many birds and a well established tour guide infrastructure. Next is probably Cairns, again loads of birds and good guides. the Iron Range in Northern QLD is also good but very seasonal, hard to get too so a bit more expensive. We have loads of Fairy-wrens all around Australia with the Superb being the most common on the east coast, so maybe after Cairns you could do Brisbane and surrounds including Lamington National Park for the Bowerbirds. There is a book called Finding Australian Birds by Clarke that lists all the states and where you will find each species which may help. Of course if you ever make it all the way down south here let me know, we do not have the diversity of species they have up North and not really a very good guide infrastructure. Cheers, Duade

    Photographing birds in Australia seems so easy... It's just that birds, which are hard to see in Europe, even as a professional ornithologist, come right up to your lens and don't care about your presence. Incredible. Great photos!

      Yeah it's like easy mode, just turn up at a park, no-one else there, no dog walkers or people coming up and disturbing things to ask you how far your lens can see, just go where you want not restricted to paths or hides with bad light. Lie down and 4 different crake species just wander along in the sun. Just hearing a crake in the UK is like a lifetime achievement.

      Trust me, it's not always this easy! especially the closer you live to a city

    • @Duade
      @Duade  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks, I am lucky to live in regional Australia so we do not have the population of bigger cities so I don't often have an issue with other humans. Certain birds are accommodating as in this video however many are not. It really depends on the species and location but given we have so many birds it is not too hard to find a species that will let you photograph it. Cheers, Duade

    Duade a 3.30am start to get to Kinnaids for such an early sunrise is very impressive! I will always enjoy your sunrise landscapes and this time with gorgeous backlit Kangaroos. Wonderful to meet some of your endemic rail birds and the big lens really does smash that background for sure. The filtered early light, low perspective and the big lens were a winning combo with the Crakes for sure. Great to meet your bright green Superb Parrot and a bird I see or hear almost daily at my home bordering a river reserve (Eastern Rosella). Hard to believe the big lens had gathered dust for most of this year Duade but so many other lenses you have trialled. A beautiful time of year and a pleasure to watch. Thanks mate.

    I love seeing you out in the field! We had a similar Australian Spotted Crake moment at the Werribee Treatment Plant recently. They must be doing so well this year which is great to see!! So glad that you saw a Superb Parrot! Gorgeous bird. We haven't managed to get up to Numurkah to see them this year. Great video! (I wish we had the camera gear you have but we chose lightweight so we can walk around with out stuff without puffing out... doubt I'd be strong enough to hold one of those big lenses!!) ~ Karen
    (PS. we were up in Wangaratta a few weeks ago staying in the Warby Ranges & we saw you at the petrol station!! Such a hoot to see you in real life! We would have said hello but we were outside in our car & you just popped into the shop so we didn't quite meet... so here's a belated hello from us! 😀)

    Thanks Duade, another great video and some fantastic images from your trusty EF 500 F4. Just think what you'd be able to do with the RF 600 F4 L ! Mind you, I've no idea how you'd manage to explain that investment to your wife :) . What a stunning bird the Superb Parrot is, although even though they are pretty common the Eastern Rosella is definitely a bit of a looker as well. Thanks again. John

    Hi Duade - really enjoy your photography. What I like most is the way you show the raw image then superimpose the processed image on top, so we can see exactly how much processing goes into the shot. Always something I’m never 100%sure about is the processing - never want to over-process and I can e a bit clumsy sometimes, but your presentation helps. Thank you 👍

    Another great video Duade. I really like these field ones much more so than gear reviews (which of course have their place and are very good as well). What I'd love is a few more post processing vids. I got so much from your ones explaining LR and PS technique, which I've watched multiple times. And perhaps nothing much has changed in your workflow. Anyway, food for thought, keep up the great work

    Thanks for the video you made some great images! I need to dust off my R5 and take it out into the field which I will do when my RF 200-800 lens arrives next month. I can't wait to see what that combo can do. I also picked up the R8 and while it's no R5 it may be good for everyday birding. I am always afraid to take my R5 out since it's so expensive. I guess I need to get over that. Cheers.

    It’s fun to see the birds in Australia, and how we have similar species in the US. Crakes remind me of our Sora (another rail). What we don’t have are kangaroos! I would be thrilled to see them in the wild. We have tons of white tail deer in Ohio….not nearly as fun as those kangaroos look! Cheers and thanks for sharing your adventures!
