Making sure my containers are big enough, I put products still in their packaging into containers. No need for labels and containers less messy to wash out. Works well in my kitchen. 😊
I’d make Pease Pudding with the yellow split peas, wash and drain the peas, put about 250g in a large saucepan and cover with enough water to come about an inch above, add salt and a very generous amount of white pepper. Bring to the boil, turn to the lowest setting to simmer, skimming the froth off from time to time. After about 20-30 minutes you will need to stir it more as it thickens and that’s why you have a big pan - (so it doesn’t spit all over the hob). It’s done when the peas are quite smooth and thick but still pourable, it sets on cooling. It is traditionally cooked in a floured muslin cloth in with the boiling ham but I’ve adapted it so it’s easy for one person and still tastes very similar- the key is white pepper. You can eat this spread on bread with a slice of ham, which is traditional in the north east of England where I’m originally from or you can use some as a soup base, adding water or stock to it and heating it slowly. I love watching your videos and I was so very happy to see you have The Victorian Kitchen Garden and other series, I remember watching them when they first came out and loved them, loved Mr Dodson and Ruth Mott and nobody I spoke too could remember them, I was beginning to think I’d imagined them 😝 so thank you again for making it possible to watch them again 🥰 I have a metal bread bin with a wooden lid that can be used as a bread board, I love it. What I’m looking for is an old fashioned glass vinegar bottle.
You can make a peas pudding with yellow split peas, you buy a ham hock put it in a clean muslin bag tie it really tight at the top. Then do the same with the yellow split peas. But put them in another clean muslin bag, and boil them in the same pot, for about 1 hour or an hour and a half. They are really tasty! Enjoy!
Hi Sean the 3 chicken breast put in the fridge to save on time and cooking they could all be seasoned and cooked in the oven when cooked wrap individually and freeze. That's what I do Sundays as part of batch cooking for one person saves me time and then I just cook, boil steam my veggies. 🙂
Just a thought when you complained of backache while standing. I have an anti fatigue mat in the kitchen. Whenever I am standing for a while, cooking, meal prep or preserving. I make sure to stand on it. It’s just a kitchen mat that has a thick foam layer inside. The foam keeps your spine from being compressed. It’s lovely and I can stand for hours.
Sow linseed in a pot and simply let it grow in your garden. Bees and butterflies love it. The flowers are beautiful yellow ( sometimes beautiful blue) and look very nice in front of your black shed:-)
Yellow split peas can be boiled up with whatever seasoning you like & just enough enough water for the peas to cook & be completely soft & broken down, but not so much as to make soup. Some people like to add a little oil. Some might add garlic or herbs. Then you can pour them into a pot & let them congeal & spread them on toast or you can add some to your bowl of salad or throw some into a stew or soup.
I would just cut part of the labels off the packets and put them into the containers facing the front, then you can see what's what🤗Oh, I see you're doing that Sean!
I do the same. Who needs a label gadget unless you want it looking tidier. Those containers look better than mine off a well known online store begins with a. Mine have pull down clips which eventually break.😢 So good job with those
@@cathybritt6312 My thoughts exactly. I cut the best before date & stick that to the container as that is important information if you don't use stuff quickly. If I have a bit left over in the original bag I attach it to the container with a rubber band until it is used up .Some things I am so lazy, I simply pop the bag into the plastic container, like the flour . It keeps it fresh and i don't care what it looks like!
Hi Sean, I bought some sheets of black stick on labels from Amazon for my storage jars. They came with a chalk pen, so if you change the contents, just wipe off and write the new one. I also make a note of the use by date too. A lot cheaper than a labelling machine.
My bread bin is one of the white enamel type with a lid that says bread on the side. It was mums and i cadged it off her when she got a new one. I think it's from the 50's. She started making her own bread when a loaf went up to 10p and she said I'm not paying that😅. That was in the 1970's and she only stopped making it when she was in her 80's when she couldn't knead the bread anymore. She used yellow split peas and pearl barley in stews to bulk it out as there were 6 kids at home. The nuts you bought was for you to make your own granola. I hope people don't start sending you bottles of wee when you start planting your veg😂😂😂😂😂
Pine kernels are used in pesto. My favourite way to use them is to lightly toast in a frypan, remove, use same pan to saute spinach or silverbeet in a little olive oil (with garlic, if liked) then throw back in the toasted pine kernels and some sultanas or raisins, season. Makes a lovely side, along with sauteed mushies, or mushrooms in cream sauce for beef or chicken
Living on my own now since my partner died, I only buy things I use regularly in bigger quantities. Otherwise there is a danger that things will be wasted. Cupboards don't get so full that way. Can I suggest you split your sausages and packs of meat into portion sizes in proper freezer bags. This means you can just take out what you need and also prevents the open packaging causing the meat to suffer from freezer burn. You can put all of the portions of the same type of meat in one bag so they are all together. I have frozen milk for many years and have never had any trouble with bottles splitting. Now I'm on my own I freeze smaller 2 litre sized bottles as they defrost much quicker.I I noticed that you bought more chicken breasts and put them all in the fridge. Will you eat all of those before they expire? If not perhaps you could put some in the freezer so you don't overload the fridge. Have you checked you don't have frozen chicken in the freezer? Again, can I suggest you use proper freezer bags to prevent meat from deteriorating. I agree about bread and happily pay a bit more for good quality. Luckily there are 2 bakeries in my small town.
I like my tinned tuna in olive oil, seems to taste better that way - I love it on an oven baked potato, with some grated cheddar cheese on the top, with a salad at the side - beautiful. I suggest you put the sell by date on your labels, along with what it is, for your new containers, otherwise you have no way of knowing when they need to be eaten by. xxx
For yellow split peas I'd get a smoked pork ribs as the best option (but you could use fresh meat if you prefer or smoked lardons/panchetta), then soak the peas in a cold water overnight (a few hours less or more wouldn't be an issue - it can be soaked up to 24 h). If you use fresh meat then you may start with cooking that meat first and getting the foamy bit off as it starts boiling - the foam wouldn't be an issue with smoked option. Then chop up onion 🧅 as much as you like it (can be a small one as I remember you not being a big fan of them) - fry the onion on the pan (together with lardons or panchetta if that was your option) and then rinse this into a pot adding your soaked peas (you can cook them in the same water or change it - it's up to you). When all that is in the pot you may taste if you need salt - with smoked options you may be fine without but fresh meat needs spices. And altogether it cooks for a decent time but then it causes no stress or problem as it doesn't need a close watching. When everything is nice and soft then cooking is done. But I'd also make this: dice a slice of white bread into about 1.5cm (1/2 inch) cubes and slightly roast them on a dry frying pan. I love adding those roasted bits into my pea soup instead of having a bread on the side. But be aware if you soak them in your soup too long they will become soggy and not that pleasant. You may add them few bits at a time if you want to explore where is your level of enjoyment 😊
Yellow split pea soup, cook for a long time with some herbs and throw in some old ham chunks or diced gammon just before you serve. Dash of mustard. Staple of the Swedish army!
I always wash new containers. A releasing agent is used on the mold so the product will release from the mold. When the container arrives it still has residue from that agent. Self raising flour has a raising agent such as baking powder already added. Plain flour requires you to add a raising agent. Self raising flour is not common where I live in Canada 🇨🇦
All colours of split peas are great in soups and stews. You can also soak them, grind them add spices and make flat breads out of them. Theyre great for bulking out a cottage pie for example and high in protein, so theyre a good staple. Hope that helps 🙏💕
Ahhhh Sean, we live in Japan and we love raw tuna - sashimi. Young fella, so delicious with a delicate taste!! Kombu - cha is a drink cha means tea and konbu is a type os seaweed. 😉
Sean when I decant a package I cut the lable off the package and put it in the new container. Thought I'd share my time saving tip with you❤I have the same issue of remembering what the substance is in the containers later on. 😅
I have, for many years, always put my flour bags when I get it, in the freezer (in polythene bags) for 24 hours and then store it in the fridge. It kills any flour weevils and eggs that might be there. I make my own bread from this flour, and it is gorgeous.
Pine cernels, cashew and whatever other nuts I'd use a teaspoon of each with my every breakfast till it's gone 😊. Flaxseed also might be a healthy addition for your porridge or yogurt, but I'm not sure if I'd enjoy that - my only flaxseed recipe is adding them into cookie mix as an egg alternative.
Pine kernels for making delicious fresh basil pesto, when you grow some basil. Put linseed into your bread for extra nutrients, or on yogurt for breakfast with the other nuts
The containers. Once you have opened the packets and poured the contents into the container you have broken the air tight seal the manufacturer has packed the contents in a sterilised environment only when you are about to use the product should you then transfer what’s left in to a container and then follow the shelf live instructions on the packaging.. all products will deteriorate once the air tight seal is broken.
It’s interesting watching you make a cozy nest for yourself…important when you live alone . I’m shocking , I find when people come over I’m always relieved when they leave so I can have my peace back and get on with my hobbies 😂 and I’m looking forward to watching your garden flourish wherever you decide to plant whether it be plot or home. Unfortunately my cat pinches all my tuna in spring water and it’s the good Italian one Sirena 😼
Ah, Bungle and Geoffrey takes me back watching Rainbow during lunchtimes in the week whilst eating my cooked dinner, which I had most days when I was in my early teens.
Pine nuts are usually blended with basil and olive oil to make a pesto. Also, a quick way to add a label is cut out the label from the original bag and tape it to the canister. Now that the world is going plastic-free, try to use glass or steel containers🫙instead of plastic to store things in. No one is forcing you, just an idea to think about.
Nice to see you organising your cupboards in your kitchen with your new containers. You don't need a labeling machine, just cut the labels of the packages stick them in containers. Like your bread bin. First time I have seen you without a cup of tea in your hand. Sean you are slipping. Good about your weight keep it up. 😊
Sean, I keep meaning to add this comment. I had to qualify in food hygiene to professional level because I was a community worker and gained a client with multiple allergies that I needed to cook meals for. (18 community workers, only me and 1 other could cook from scratch!) Anyway, one of the quickest and also safest ways to defrost anything is to plunge into cold water. Approved food hygiene standard and really, really quick. Your method of boiling frozen chicken breasts makes them really tough. You could use them to sole your shoes with. Not sure it is safe either, but don't know.
Beautiful… lovely spending time with you Sean. Hope you have a lovely week as well with your friends. We have the same bread bin as you, I’m not sure if the wood helps keep the bread fresh or the fact we bake our own but, we find taking it out of the wrapper keeps it just as fresh. But, I’m sure you’ll find out one way or another. Thank you for another lovely video. ❤ from us two old farts. Jay & Joe ❤ 😊
Yes Sean, I would wash with warm soapy water before using the containers. I use the label from the packed and the date's too.. I think someone else suggested that too. 👍😉🇨🇮☘️Eire
Nutmeats can be ground/chopped to use in muesli, in muffins, as a way of coating fish instead of flour. Much the same for split peas, except for muesli. Please freeze the nutmeats. People make portable snacks with honey, nuts and various seeds, flax is often used, rolled oats, buckwheat. Toasted these are delicious.
Sean, if you want to extend the life of your flour and walnuts. Keep them in the freezer or fridge. You can take the flour right out of the freezer and bake with it.
You don't need fancy labels for your containers. I write on mine with a permanent marker pen 😄I also write the use-by date on a piece of paper and drop it in the top of the container. Split peas will be good in your slow cooker meals. Keep your yeast in the fridge. You've got a lot of food stuffs there to get through. I find meal planning is great for making sure I am only buying what I will use and before their expiry date.
Sean, nuts can be frozen. I purchased pecan halves in the autumn and store them in the freezer to use all year for when I make homemade candy, cakes and cookies.
Love the veggies for Velindre charity. The Velindre looked after my sister when she was so ill, although we lost her in 2020 I will always be grateful for the care they gave her. I have some sticky labels for labelling jar contents. I’ve just bought some acrylic pens for labelling glass jars but you need to always keep the same contents in them.
I cut the label out of the packet & use selloptape, or if it is a homemade concoction I use a peice of scrap paper & tape. I have used masking tape before. If it was something I was going sell or give away, then I would use a posh label. Some things like honey have legal rules though.
Always wash any new contains, dishs, pans, etc. Self. rising has levelening (baking soda and baking power. And maybe crm of tartar) . The recipes in the vidro sounds good. 😊
A good Sellotape for closing plastic packages, or half eaten crisps , toffees ect, works well , also use the label of the product you bought for your containers, cut and tape , nice and neatly , unless your particular that is .
Easy Split Pea Soup: onions, leeks, veg of choice, herbs and broth (or broth cubes) of choice + salt, pepper and any flavorings you're keen on. Simmer until peas are tender and fall apart. Easy... peasy 😉 And I use mason(canning) jars for storing all my cupboard grub - even have a little vacuum sealing doodad to suck out the air 👌
When I don’t have labels, I cut a piece of the pack (name of product or use by date) and pop it in the container Pine kernels are nice sprinkled on salads or plain yoghurts. Also an ingredient of basil pesto.
I think all the nut/oat based 'milks' aren't allowed to be called milk anymore because they technically aren't milk even tho they're used as a milk replacement. They're now called oat drink or coconut drink etc.
Sean, with the yellow split peas: take a generous cup of split peas, rinse them under cold water, put in a pot with a little chopped onion, maybe chopped carrot(chop small) , a bay leaf if you have it , salt or you can get a bit of a ham from your butcher you can add it in a s a big peace it will all break apart, then cook on low heat until it is thick and creamy. May have to add water. Delicious and nutritious esp with fresh home made bread. Also freezes well. Staple in Scandinavia.
Sean you need a notebook for a garden journal. That way you can make drawings where you plant things plus I pull off the labels from the pots and stick them on a page. Because I suffer from crs 😂 also even after you get a label maker for food storage cut out the expiration dates from pkgs and put inside the bins.
You should ALWAYS wash ANY containers you buy before filling them, especially ones for food because you have no idea what was in them. Also, if you gently tap the bottom of the containers on the counter, the flour, etc. will compact down and you can fit more in.
I’m shocked that many of the expiration dates were for only a few months out. I’d have difficulty using all that food before then. I do really love the look of all those perfectly shaped containers. I’m afraid I use my glass jars when I empty them. It works but not as pretty as yours are 😉
if you havnt ordered the label machine yet I just bought a nimbot its really good you can not only get white and clear labels but also labels to put on cables which is very useful
You should postva list on the fridge of what you've bought. The use by day and make a loose menu. Im widowed and it helps to not waste ! Just a suggestion as food in the states is getting pricey! 🎉
Keep walnuts and pine kernals and other nuts in freezer lengthens their shelf life for ages, freezing stops the valuable oils in them from going rancid.
Good advice. I find if you don’t do this they go rancid well before the best before date. They only take a minute or two to defrost and the oils stop them sticking together so no probs from freezing, even for chopped nuts. Goes for pine kernels too.
My gosh Sean, yer fair into yer nuts😅 useful containers, split peas for soup, soak overnight for quicker cooking although you don't have to, yellow Split Peas, diced Onions, diced Potato, diced Carrots, couple of Ham, Beef or Chicken cubes, salt to season and pepper. Bootiful soup😊 You usually say, when you buy a Swede what the American's call it but never what we call it in Scotland, Turnip or Neep😂
Hi Sean much as I enjoy your weekly unpacking of shopping...still awaiting for your your electric bicycle review promised a week ago....no pressure haha...it would save you a bit instead of the bus to Treorchy and keep fit ?
Pine kernels, are they the same as pine nuts? Toast and use in pesto. For the nuts I buy, I put them in the freezer and they last so much longer. Nuts can go rancid, so smell them first before you eat them. I love those containers for my food, too. I use them for pasta, rice, beans, sugar and flour. Keeps any grain moths out, and seems to keep them fresher.
If I put the whole packet of something in a container like yours I cut off some of the packet like where is says self raising or plain flour. I snip that bit off and put on inside facing out. As I don’t have a label thing.
I soaked some Aduki beans and got nice spouts for salad. The second time (same procedure of rinsing every day) I soaked them they sprouted and started to smell off. Had to bin them.
Great video Sean love seeing your food haul 👌 Your steady weight loss is the best way because once you get down to what your happy with its more likely to stay off so well done 😊 hope you have a nice time with your friends take care!❤
hi Sean, I think these were for making your own granola, you can also sprinkle flax seeds powder on your breakfast cereals. lol I was writing this as you said maybe it was granola I was going to make.
Sean, how to tell what flour that is in the box is to make a pancake with it. It'll either be American style or crepe style but either way it'll be edible and then you'll know.
I got some yellow split peas the other day at the grocery because they were drastically price-reduced (only 39 cents for the one-pound bag!!!) and since it’s WAY too hot here for soup, I looked up recipes for them and found some for yellow split pea fritters. It’s supposedly an Indian dish (or maybe just Indian-inspired) and is like falafel using the split peas instead of garbanzo beans. And you don’t even have to cook them--all you do is soak them--preferably overnight, but for at least four hours according to the recipes I’ve looked at. I won’t get to make them till at least next week, but I’m looking forward to them because I love veggie fritters.
I loved how the lady at the charity garden praised each of the youngsters individually, it's so important to acknowledge and appreciate one another.

Waitrose chunky cod or haddock fish fingers, the frozen ones are only £3.75 for 6. All fish no filler. Great quality.
For your tubs get a bit of paper or the name cut from the packet and selotape to the tub . Easy to change when you get a labeller.
Ah, Bungle and Geoffrey takes me back watching Rainbow during lunchtimes in the week whilst eating my cooked dinner, which I had most days when I was in my early teens.
Loved rainbow ...paint the whole world with a rainbow that tune is forever etched in my mind
my gosh Sean you gorra lorra lorra nuts to eat by September😂😂 the pine kernels are lovely lightly toasted in frying pan on salads 😊
Also sprinkle on top of pasta dishes or make pesto for pasta sauce.
Squezze the poor grapefruit, she is waiting so long in your fridge 😅 Liebe Grüße
There may be less sugar in beans, however frozen peas are full of iron. More than spinach
(18 community workers, only me and 1 other could cook from scratch!)
Anyway, one of the quickest and also safest ways to defrost anything is to plunge into cold water. Approved food hygiene standard and really, really quick.
Your method of boiling frozen chicken breasts makes them really tough. You could use them to sole your shoes with. Not sure it is safe either, but don't know.
It’s common practise in the US apparently, loads of videos on it.
I love Kefir, mostly with fruit.
Buckwheat flour makes great pancakes
Sean, nuts can be frozen. I purchased pecan halves in the autumn and store them in the freezer to use all year for when I make homemade candy, cakes and cookies.
If that's a lemon in your fridge wrap it in newspaper and it will last much longer and not go brown 😊
It's not.
Easy... peasy 😉
And I use mason(canning) jars for storing all my cupboard grub - even have a little vacuum sealing doodad to suck out the air 👌
😮 i saw purple sweet potatoes the other day, mentioned you to my friend and now cant for the life of me remember where!!!!!
REMEMBER NOW farm shop in worcestershire when jac came from Holland!
When I don’t have labels, I cut a piece of the pack (name of product or use by date) and pop it in the container
Pine kernels are nice sprinkled on salads or plain yoghurts. Also an ingredient of basil pesto.
My only comment is to get tuna packed in water, no oil. My cats love this occasionally.
I think all the nut/oat based 'milks' aren't allowed to be called milk anymore because they technically aren't milk even tho they're used as a milk replacement. They're now called oat drink or coconut drink etc.
You can keep your nuts and seeds in the fridge for longer time. I am from a tropical country. It goes rancid much quicker than in a cold country
I don't eat sugar but I would make an exception for the carrot cake 😂
It works but not as pretty as yours are 😉
Enjoy your walk ❤
if you havnt ordered the label machine yet I just bought a nimbot its really good you can not only get white and clear labels but also labels to put on cables which is very useful
Cut the original package and best before date of the package and make a label that way, stick on with clear tape
Cut the label off of the packet and tape it to your container.😊
You should postva list on the fridge of what you've bought. The use by day and make a loose menu. Im widowed and it helps to not waste ! Just a suggestion as food in the states is getting pricey! 🎉
Yellow split pea rice . Boil peas until almost cooked and rice and cook until rice is done.
@@SoniaFennell-r5c Thanks for the tip! Just pitched some walnuts 😢🎉
Yellow split pea Dahl is nice , soup too.
Yummy. I would make cashew butter or keto granola and my hubby would love that.
Granola is so easy.
Totally with you on the tuna in spring water. I don't care for an oily tuna.
I sprinkle flaxseed and chopped nuts, onto my breakfast of fruit and yoghurt.
I do as well flax/hemp and a few chia seeds
My breadbin is Tupperware, must have had it 30 years
Sean, you can put the yeast and the nuts in the freezer. They'll last a lot longer. Have a great weekend. Terry Ont. Can.
Will be in Wales on Thursday my sister in. Bridgend it will be 24 hours flying hope the weather is warmer than here in NZ Aotearoa
If you keep your nuts in the fridge/freezer it will extend the shelf life. Nuts are high fat and can go rancid.
Great video Sean love seeing your food haul 👌
Your steady weight loss is the best way because once you get down to what your happy with its more likely to stay off so well done 😊 hope you have a nice time with your friends take care!❤
hi Sean, I think these were for making your own granola, you can also sprinkle flax seeds powder on your breakfast cereals. lol I was writing this as you said maybe it was granola I was going to make.
I have those canisters. Bought them from Sainsbury’s in the sale 😊
I think you can make pease pudding with split peas. Beautiful!😋xx
Granola is easy to make with all mixed nuts etc, nice with maple syrup. You can also roast them and coat in dark chocolate. Loads of recipes on TH-cam
I love your videos of the simple things in your life. It’s these things that really matter in this stressful world. Power to you Sean
Sean cut the labels of the packet and tape them on until you get a labeler 😊
Split peas are great in homemade soups and stews.
Yellow spilt peas can be added to stews to thicken and add protein
You don't need a labeler for your jars with flour etc. Write on it with a marker (can be a whiteboard marker or a permanent marker, depending ...)
Hi Sean cheek if it best before then most dried food last a lot longer Eat by I would use up x
Really missed your videos this week. Lovely ti have you back 🥰
Make a split pea soup with onion, carrot and a ham bone or ham chunks. Very easy to make and very tasty.
