We get the sense that they're fighting for the will of the people, not for them singing about tomorrow, which honestly doesn't make much sense when you compare it to the context of the Second French Revolution. The Second French Revolution changed nothing, much like the first. They started with a king and ended with a king (although for the second revolution they replaced the absolute monarchy with a constitutional one.)
I am from the UK and like Victor Hugo I am a supporter of a United Europe. As Hugo was exiled from his beloved France I too am being dragged out of the European Union against my wishes.
