Tiz sounds like a sort of works K.Emerson' s of the past, The harmony is so jazzy. Typical Schulhof. I like it.

Ce compositeur construit ses architectures sonores comme un mouvement de masses sonores qui se heurtent à des vitesses fulgurantes et sous tellement d’angles différents, délimités comme des zones de couleurs irisés sur une carte, tout en mouvements gracieux !!

Lots of quotes from Mahler's fifth in the first movement. Obviously his point of departure.

Agree Tony . Not his greatest piece , but still grand stuff. This , with being a jew, didn't exactly endear him to the madness of Hitler and Nazis ....too bad he therefore died young and his music seems forgotten by many.

The Communist Manifesto is on an old Supraphon lp that I probably bought in a charity shop or similar for next to nothing. My recollection is that it is in the short sharp clippy neo-classical style of c.1920s Stravinsky - e.g. sort of of like a choral version of L'Histoire du Soldat or something like Oedipus Rex.

Well, the second movement is quite... soundtrack like, I can definitely picture chaos and eerie uneasiness, the harmony sounds similar to The Omen's soundtrack.

To me Mahler's "Wunderhorn" music is a sort of fundament.

This is a great piece of heavy metal social realism! The only thing I'd wish for was that the conductor had been a little more varied in the dynamics. Listening to 37:11 in FF (most of it) gets a bit grating and tiring - on the voices of the singers too.
It's ironic that Schulhoff, who was a convinced communist, managed to write a work that inherently shows the banality and brutality of communism while being a believable piece of music on its own merits. He was a genius indeed. Too bad he was cut short in his composing by the asinine criminality of the Germans.

Thinks: If a lack of dynamics is a measure of socialist thematic tendencies a lot of Hans Zimmer's movie stuff must be very communist indeed! :-)

Actually I can hear Hitler's anti-semitism in the romantic wailing of Wagner's operas!
