  • In first part of this two part video I demonstrate a simple rain water butt siphon system that I made last year at zero cost. In the second part of this video, now that I know it works I've made an Extension enabling me to doubling the amount of rain water I can catch. With lots of vegetables growing in lots of bags and buckets and my small greenhouse a plentiful supply of water is essential. You can also reuse your bath water if push comes to shove • Recycle Bath Water. Gr...

The problem with collecting fresh rainwater like that which I have learned from personal experience, is in a few days you will start to see mosquito larvae in the water. Also I wouldn't want my pets drinking that water due to all the heavy metals , chemicals and plastics (barium, strontium, cesium etc) they spray when they do their stratospheric aerosol injection to manipulate the weather. Another general term they use for the manipulation of the environment is "geoengineering". You could prevent the mosquito issue by covering your blue containers with window screen mesh AND by taking some mesh and covering the end of the gutter before it enters the the containers. Otherwise, you have to use up that collected water quickly before the larva starts growing.
Another thing I just thought of that people might do is place the gutters so they extend out to the gardens and perhaps dig a pond just above the gardens so the water in the pond on dry days can seep into the soil and keep the nearby gardens moist.

Thanks for your concern Emily but I think the pup's will be OK drinking rainwater. After all, any dog owner will tell you that once off the lead a dog will eat and drink most anything it finds muddy puddles being a particular favorite for a quick drink especially after having just been swimming in the sea, that salt water must make them dead thirsty. PS No mosquito's in my garden, too dry and too cold I think. PPS " they do their stratospheric aerosol injection to manipulate the weather". Who's "They"?

Put an air stone in the water. Mosquitos don’t populate moving water. Keeps it fresh as well.

Well, it works well. And if nothing else, you'll definitely save money on watering the doggos.
    Great idea

I use the recycling boxes to grow vege in. Works well. Pack out bottom half of box with compostable material (sticks, leaves etc.) and top up with compost. End of season I add more compost material to bottom of box and replace soil. Not had any great slug problems with the system. No more than usual anyway. No noticeable nitrogen depletion either. The soil level in box does sink during the year as the bottom layer rots down so make sure the box is topped up right to top before you plant into it and no problem. It is called "composting in place" or a form of huggelculture (did I spell that right?). It saves on compost and also feeds the soil. Win win.

I have to huge Jo-Jos to catch water, but the problem with them is you need electricity for the pump and am not going to mess with them.
We have load shedding (no electricity) a couple of hours each day, and this system you created will be absolutely perfect for this
Thank you for always sharing all your knowledge, it is always appreciated.

So all the butts are full at the moment and all the siphon tubes are full. I take a bucket full of water out of the end butt and all the siphons start to equalize the level in all the butts. Five butts all drop by 1/5th of a bucket full. I stop taking water when there is a danger I expose the end of one of the tubes. Provided I don't expose the end of a tube the system stays primed. When it rains all five butts fill up by themselves. No cost to make, no cost to run. "That's a result"!

You could go to your local plumbing company and see if they have 55 gallon drums they want to get rid of. The ones that had plumbers antifreeze in then rince them with hot water and dish soap. Cheers form Canada
