Great videos. If you want to increase your audience, I'm a woodworker and there are a lot of us looking for sharpening information. I'm just assuming your videos would apply to chisels and hand planes but I also don't know about metal hardness with these tools compared to kitchen knives. Thank you for the detailed information that you provide.

I have seen people professional using the Chosera 1000k for setting the bevel on a straight razor and after follow all the progression on Shapton Glass. Can you tell me why this mix of brands?

I find it easy to get treetopping edges with the 340 and a strop. If its too dull for a strop, use 220 Or so as the starting point. polishing a dull edge with something as stupidly fine as 1000 grit is kinda dumb. Unless its a straight razor. I like really thin edges with really hard steel. I remember the first time i got a cold steel xl voyager to shave with my dmt black x coarse stone showed me that "finer finer finer polish polish" mentality is just marketing. I do think i want a 120 and 1k stone though i just love this new 340 grit i got so much! I used to own the 16k shapton years ago but now i am realizing that level of fine could only be noticed by machines doing it perfectly and also the need would be basically eye surgery. But i did have fun using it to keep my benchmade 550hg as a shaving razor in college with it lol. I believe a freehand sharpener should practice their skills to getting shaving edges with their coarsest stone before moving on to a finer stone.

Do you know you can't use that lapping plate on any shapton stone under 500 grit. You will need a different lapping plate for the course stones. Why is the pond double sided?

So, with the Shapton Glass stones, are they, for example, 8000 grit, or 8000 mesh? I ask because the 8000 Shapton glass says 8000 mesh, then Micron rating is 1.84. 1.84 Micron translates to around 11572 grit... I am curious, as I want to make sure I follow the "grit ratings" in my stages of sharpening / polishing.

Ricky, do you have to lap a brand new Shapton Glass Whetstone before using, or is it flat from the factory???

Is shapton the apple of sharpening stones

Shapton is definitely the higher end of sharpening stones, they are great quality and don't require long soaking periods.

Is the 16000 overkill for chisels? Rob Cosman swears by them. I have a 12,000 ceramic stone. I'm trying to decide if I want to spend another 150 dollars.

I got 500, 1000, 4000, 8000 then strop with 12k bark river compound, i was able to convex and mirror polish almost all my knives, even my flat ground blades have a polished secondary convex. Also The shapton lapping plate is grossly overpriced, for $90 you can get an atoma 120 grit that will suffice and also be perfect for removing deep chips and complete edge reshaping.
