i give you great credit for testing Black evaluating the Arkansas stone. As a very old fellow , I began my quest for "sharp" on good quality natural Arkansas stones. For most steels used nowadays, I use waterstones (mostly Shapton Pros) and for "rough work" a Sigma 1000 soaking STONE. After my 8000 Shapton, I go to a diamond loaded strop as my final stage. That strop does not change results when considering RC . It refines any type of steel. It is the "Horse Butt" from "Tools for Working Wood:" and has very low deflection. I now have a nice supply of old harness leather that will make some great strops.I am glad you are explaining strops, because they are so "under-used" or "mis-used." I am commenting here because of the very close relationship between a final edge on low micron (high number grit) stones and the easily obtained equal final edge off a good strop.
Unfinished tutorial !!!!!! You are SO respected, it would be nice for you to cover the highest end of grits, 16,000 to 30,00. Though your opinion may not be what the folks who have already purchased these VERY expensive stones want to hear, your thoughts are EXACTLY what is needed for others who are considering the extreme cost versus practical delivery expectation from these stones. Thank you for all your shared knowledge. Leonard Wells
Leonard wells I thought about getting the 30,000 grit stone. After much thought and looking at my already beautiful 8000 mirror finish on work knives, I decided against it.
I love the Black Ark. I have seen it rated from 8-12K. I use it dry on almost everything regardless of R-W hardness. Try it and you will love it. I keep a pocket stone with me all the time.
I love my Naniwa snow white!! It is very expensive though compared to other stones. But she gets the job done relatively quickly and well. I go from 1000, to 8000, to .125 micron diamond spray on a leather strop. I've brought back knives with completely rounded edges to shaving in about an hour!! Nothing can beat Naniwa in my opinion
Hey Ryky! Have you ever tried the Spyderco bench stones? If so, what are your thoughts on those? Keep up the good work! I love your videos and their contents. Best regards!
Hey Ryky, can you please test the "Belgische Brocken"? They are natural whetstones from Belgium, handmade and I have read a lot of good things about them. The 6000 grit one is only 35€ and the 8000 grit is 70€ here in Germany. Would love to hear what you think, if they are available in the US as well
Man what are u talking ? The GBB 15 cm long 7 cm wide in extra extra quality (which is around 10k grid) is actually 211 Euros in Germany and its a "Small stone" A BBB 20 cm long 6 cm wide is also around 70-80 Euros. Sent me a link with ur prices...lol Anyway, yes GBB and BBB are the best 4-10k grid Stones u can actually buy. My strop arrived this week! So awesome, happy to be a patreon. Can you remember which leather you sent me? On topic : I love the feel of the Cerax 8000 in this range. As I do sharpening for relaxation, speed is no factor. Although the Cerax is rather fast cutting.
So glad to see that your opinion on the Shapton pro hasn't changed - I got mine a few months ago and have loved using it, so it's nice to see that it's still your value pick. I remember you saying that you don't really need to worry about building up the grits too much and that it's okay to jump from 1000 to 6000, but how about 1000 to 8000? should I get a 3000 grit if I want to take something up to 8000?
It comes down to a trade off between time and money... I have the Shapton Kuromaku Pro's in 1000, 5000, 8000 and 12000 I got on Amazon for a package price. I haven't used the last one yet (not needed on the Henckel 5 stars, but will use on the Yaxell Gou and my chisels), I believe Riki has mentioned many times that the 1000 is more like an 800... as such I ended up getting the 2000 and it cut down the amount of time I was spending polishing on the 5000. The 8000 I mainly strop on it, before going to the leather strop. In my experience, the bigger the difference between the grits, the more time you will spend on the high grit stone. Now as far as the high end, it depends on the finish you want and how much time you are willing to spend to get it. I have been very happy with the Shapton pro's but dished my Shapton Glass 320 pretty bad sharpening/removing chips and nicks on my splitting ax. Ordered a cheaper stone to finish that project.

the only stone i have in this range is the kitiyama 8000, I'm happy with the finish it leaves and the feel. I just dont have the money to buy and try other stones at this lvl.
Third time I've watched this video in three years. With experience, it seems to me that a good polishing stone at 8k is, as Ryky has said, high enough. My personal reasoning is that a leather strop with 0.5 micron diamond paste is your finish. Everything below that is about setting a bevel and getting scratch marks fine enough (like "zero"), so that your strop can work. Whether or not you actually need sub-100 Bess is another matter. You have to know how to care for an edge like that, or it's just wasted in an average western kitchen, like using a straight edge razor to slice an apple on a hardwood cutting board.
All my stones are Shapton pros, as I live in Japan they are not very expensive here. Sounds like you didn't used it since last year since your comments are the same ? Do you prefer the stones before their first use ? Your videos are very helpfull ! Thanks.

What about Suehiro cerax 5050 (Grit #5000) ?? I use Suehiro cerax 1010 grit 1000 for that grit and its great. I want to know if someone here ever use the Suehiro cerax 5050? I used to use king KDS 1000/6000 8 years ago and it works fine for knives HRS 60 and under. Nowadays I used steel like SG2 and HAP40 i want to try ceramic polishing stone. Any recommendations?? Thank you
Hi Ryky, first of all, i really enjoy your videos, in your stats you will find me between those who watch the full one hour videos ;) anyway i've seen the nagura stone in your kit, and i'm iterested in their set (from 1000 to 12000) i wanted to ask you if you can do a video about them and talk about which grit is actually usefull. The 12000 is something i would like to have but i don't want to waste money if you say the with a 3000 and a 8000 it will be enough... (i know that maybe a 1000 and a leather strop is enough but i can't help myself...) But since i'm a youtuber (to be ) too, i know it can be tricky to make a video just cause i ask about it, but if you manage to answer me into one of your Q & A or even here it will be more than enough, sorry for the long comment...and thank you.
Well, it can’t come soon enough as I am sure these grits are on someone’s Santa’s wish list and I hate to see good money going towards futile “pie in the sky” sharpening stones in the never ending search for the blade sharp enough to slice a piece of something so thin there is only one side !!!! Merry Christmas, love all you do. Leonard
Mr. Burrfect (pun intended), I did some research on the Arkansas Oil Stones and found that ones sold from different retailers are made from different materials. For example, Sharpeningsupplies.com sells Arkansas Black stones made of Microchristaline while Dan's Whetstones are made of Novaculite. Can you compare both stones in terms of performance?
Quartz is common mineral (SiO2) on the earths crust and novaculatie is a microcrystalline quartz. When it comes to the Arkansas stones they do differ, but that is due to the different factors controlling the process of producing novaculite. One thing you often look for when it comes to Arkansas oil stones is the density, the density of the stone. Generally a more dense stone give a finer finish.
Finishing Stone question: I recently purchased the Naniwa Chosera 800 and 3000 per your endorsements. My new favorite possessions, I love the feel and totally understand your description of "snappyness". I am looking to buy a finishing stone. If the Suehiro Debado LD601 6000 and the Naniwa Snow White 8000 were the same price, would you have a preference? Which is more snappy, or do you have suggestions for any other stones?
I understand that the stones you're recommending are extremely good, but my budget doesn't stretch that far for my knife collection. My knives (30 odd) range from 58 to 64 Rockwell, so I probably don't need a high-end whetstone. Have you looked at the Nirey stones at all? If so, I'd appreciate your opinion. I'm thinking of buying a 300/800 (I think) and a 3000/8000 but I want some experience based opinions before I spend a hundred Odd dollars. Cheers buddy.
If your looking for a waterstone thats inexpensive look into the king deluxe stones. They work great and you get a nice big stone for a decent price. If you need something course I would say to get an india or crystalon oil stone and just use it with either water or water mixed with dish soap.
Burrfection I was also wondering your opinion of the Dalstrong Stones in general. I have the whole collection and not sure if I like them or not yet. I know they need to be flatened and used again before I decide on that.
Hi Ryky, another great video. What is your favorite splash and go 8000grit stone and do you think once you are done stropping with a 3000 grit can you go up to 8000? Or do you think you have to do 5000 and then the 8000? Thanks in advance. ^_^
After watching a number of yours, and other content creator’s, video’s I got myself three stones from rough to polish, the finest grit being the Rika 5000, but have been looking to add a higher polish stone to finish with. I notice you never review past 8000. I was looking at the Shapton Glass 8000 or 10,000 and would love your input, the price difference is not a determining factor, but I do love the cosmetic value of the Shapton Glass stones. I was interested in what you had to say about the Kitayama 8000, but do not like the attached base.
I don’t think the King 8,000 has an attached base but I can’t remember (I haven’t used it). The king 6,000 grit and a loaded strop, will produce excellent mirror polishes. Shapton has a 12,000 grit stone (not shapton glass).
Hey Ryky! Weird question. I bought a Debado MD 100. I want to know, do i have to buy a polishing stone that is about the same price range, or you can take a "budget" high grit polishing stone?
Hi Ryky, I’m a newbie and I’ve just bought the sharp pebble stones, both the 400/1k and the 3k/8k. With the first one everything is going good, as you describe in one of your vids. The 3k/8k looks strange to me: it wears out like chalk and it has become concave after about four sharpening sessions. Is it normal? I’ve just soaked it until it ends bubbling and pass the knives exactly as I’ve done on the 400/1000 thanks for your help
I can get the Snow White and kitiyama 8000 for the exact same price in UK... which should I go for. My set up is currently Atoma 400, chosera 800 and 3000. I really want an 8k but just can’t decide. My heart says SW but I hear so many issues with cracking etc. They both have bases which I actually prefer. I like the look of the kitty but just can’t decide. the Kitayama 8K probably loads up a bit faster than the other higher end 8K stones mentioned, and even SLIGHTLY faster than the Suehiro Debado 6K in the video. never really bothered me too much, because you aren't grinding the 8K stone the way you do a 1K stone, and even with a bit of load up, speed never became a factor, and polish was unhindered. never had a chance for the Kaiden stones, don't think anyone carries them here in the US

Thank you
What do you think about Kunsuto? I bought them and love it. The 6000 seems very soft, but I have nothing to compare with....?
Can we get the Yaxell showroom video for christmas?
Hi Ryky,
first of all, i really enjoy your videos, in your stats you will find me between those who watch the full one hour videos ;) anyway i've seen the nagura stone in your kit, and i'm iterested in their set (from 1000 to 12000) i wanted to ask you if you can do a video about them and talk about which grit is actually usefull.
Please do a review on global knifes
Well, it can’t come soon enough as I am sure these grits are on someone’s Santa’s wish list and I hate to see good money going towards futile “pie in the sky” sharpening stones in the never ending search for the blade sharp enough to slice a piece of something so thin there is only one side !!!! Merry Christmas, love all you do. Leonard
Have you tried the Arkansas Black as a soaking water stone?
Good video.
I need a stone for sharpening shears
I was told 8000 grit was good
Can someone help please
Need opinion on kitiyama 8000, shapton pro 8000 and sheuhiro superfine 8000?
Mr. Burrfect (pun intended),
I did some research on the Arkansas Oil Stones and found that ones sold from different retailers are made from different materials.
Hey new to the channel, wondering what your preferred strop compound is? Just bought one of you rolled buffalo ones on etsy!
Is the shapton pro 5000 a good follow up to the chosera 3000?
too close in grit. better would be an 8K stone like the kityama 8K in my top picks www.amazon.com/shop/burrfection
I think it is a good follow up stone
The chosera 3000 is a better 5k Stone than the shapton pro 5k lol
No. We need more videos please
@@westcoastwarriorsarchive7929 Thanks for the suggestions buddy.
Yes, I would like to see the best overall stones and knives :-)
Hi Ryky,
What do you think of the MDF flywheel sharpening video's on TH-cam? Could it work?
Love your video's
Regards
robert
It does work dude, pretty solid results
Burrfection What do you think of the 1000/6000 Dalstrong WhetStone Kit ?
Burrfection I was also wondering your opinion of the Dalstrong Stones in general. I have the whole collection and not sure if I like them or not yet. I know they need to be flatened and used again before I decide on that.
Trash
so wich one gives best mirror finish
I want to buy one of these two knives the shun hiro or the yaxell super gou which one should I buy?
Where can I find this Arkansas stone? I want to try one
Hi Ryky, another great video. What is your favorite splash and go 8000grit stone and do you think once you are done stropping with a 3000 grit can you go up to 8000? Or do you think you have to do 5000 and then the 8000? Thanks in advance. ^_^
5000 would be unnecessary between 3000 and 8000
Palmer McKinney Thanks ^_^
no need to have 5k in between.
Burrfection Thank you 🙏🏼 ^_^
After watching a number of yours, and other content creator’s, video’s I got myself three stones from rough to polish, the finest grit being the Rika 5000, but have been looking to add a higher polish stone to finish with.
Yes to the best stones review please
Hey Ryky!
Weird question. I bought a Debado MD 100.
I want to know, do i have to buy a polishing stone that is about the same price range, or you can take a "budget" high grit polishing stone?
Were are you located
I don’t suppose you know if any of these will diminish a hamon on a sword?? Or do I really need natural ?? (Shinken/katana)
Where can I get the debado without base?

Hi Ryky, I’m a newbie and I’ve just bought the sharp pebble stones, both the 400/1k and the 3k/8k. With the first one everything is going good, as you describe in one of your vids. The 3k/8k looks strange to me: it wears out like chalk and it has become concave after about four sharpening sessions. Is it normal? I’ve just soaked it until it ends bubbling and pass the knives exactly as I’ve done on the 400/1000 thanks for your help
Throw them in the bin and put it down to experience
For the kitchen sure, but for straight razors, 8000 isn't enough unless you've got soft whiskers.
If money wasn’t an option, which is best performance? Anybody can’t answer 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
hi waiting on your knife of the year awards!

@@Burrfection alright here we go! Hehe

What happened to a series in 2019, 2020, etc... I would watch a "Best of 2022..." series over and over again. Please use a ranking system answering the following questions;
- Slowest wearing
- Load-up time
- Cutting speed
- Rockwell hardness stone works best with
What is the exact arkansas stone in this video?
can't wait for the knives
of the ones I know you have,
I'm cheering for
Yaxell super gou, yaxell gou, Miyabi Ash Miyabi Birchwood, your Masamoto KS, Tojiro SG2,

And Enso hd, Mercer genesis, Mercer Rennaisance, Tojiro ITK Tojiro DP, Yaxell Mon for "best value"
But we'll see when it come out!
yup. all good stuff, and yes, they will be going head--to head.
Hi I’m new to stone sharpening, did a bit a long time ago but been slack and use a steel now. I would like to buy a couple of stones not to expensive what would you recommend?
Would a 3000 and a 8000 grit make sense?
Thanks
chosera 1000 and a strop is your best bang for the buck
Ivan Miholić I will check your suggestion out thank you

This is my dream when I win lottery lol
Nice
Uhhhh, way to narrow it down there Guy, thanks for showing is what we already knew, how many options there are.
not mentioning the GBB if ur talking about 6-10k grid stones is actually a sin.
same as BBB if u talk about 4-6k
I dont know....but it rly seems like u only support Japanese Stones and 1 American....
Even the Germans make some rly good whetstones like the "Misarkaultra" from Zische
Zische Whetstones are actually rly good for a much lower price than all this "Naniwas" and "Shaptons"
gbb ? bbb ?
I laugh in the voice of the FAMOUS RIVER 5000 condolences to you!
RIKA5000
Hi Ricky do you find the kitiyama 8k stone loads up quickly , have you tried a stone made by Kaiden they have stones up to 13k from www.chefsarmoury.com.au here in australia . Regards and merry xmas from Dean from Oz
the Kitayama 8K probably loads up a bit faster than the other higher end 8K stones mentioned, and even SLIGHTLY faster than the Suehiro Debado 6K in the video. never really bothered me too much, because you aren't grinding the 8K stone the way you do a 1K stone, and even with a bit of load up, speed never became a factor, and polish was unhindered. never had a chance for the Kaiden stones, don't think anyone carries them here in the US
Woohoo
Great video!! Ty
