Conquering Gooseberry

- Gooseberry Hill, located immediately to the south of Dunolly has long been a popular location for railfans with a nice 1 in 50 climb facing up trains coming from points further north.
Up until the Murray Basin Rail Project this wasn't as much of a hindrance as up trains would use the centre road through Dunolly and could make a good run-up at the climb, however the conversion of the centre road to SG along with the gauge transfer immediately at the bottom of the hill as part of the MBRP suddenly meant that all trains were restricted to 15kph through that section and with the lack of a proper run-up the climb became a lot more interesting from an audio standpoint with the locos on trains making the climb now having to work even harder for it.
So here's a bit over an hours worth of footage from the last six or so years of various freight and heritage passenger trains all trying their hand at the 1 in 50, some doing it with greater ease than others. There's also a couple of down trains featured on the south side of the hill, though with these not actually working very hard having descended from Bet Bet there's only a couple of those thrown in.

Goodday Brad,
I need to take a day off work & spend a day either with you or your dad.
Only one place to check out
Gooseberry
Great video thoroughly enjoyed it.
Cheers
Louis Kats 😀👍
It's well worth doing, though not as easy to get things there at a good time as it used to be a couple of years back. Most stuff there now seems to be overnight.
Liked and subscribed! Nothing beats a decent EMD roaring up a steep hill... that steam special at 16:00:00, I'd have been in the rear coach enjoying the diesels not that wheezing tea pot up front 😁
Also, kudos for panning - so many people don't and then I have to watch some boring wagons or coaches for three minutes.
Thank you very much!
A young me when I was route learning out there stalled on Gooseberry. Rolled back gave it a second crack and up we went!
Never seen one stall there myself, though a couple I could have sworn were going close
@@Greensleeves94 We were overloaded. And one of the Locos wasn't online (We thought it was) so chucked it online at the station and got up!
@@bigman4225 That'll do it!
I love the sound of locomotive engine’s roar trying to fight the grade
Edit: 6:05 why are NR classes doing grain instead of the usual intermodal services?
The NR's were being trialled with holding a loaded train on the Avoca line with just the loco brakes with the intention to put them on the Merbein containers for DOO operation and the grainy was just a convenient train to use.
They failed.
@@Greensleeves94 well the nr’s are just for intermodals then
Not necessarily, it'll just mean they won't be able to run them DOO on the Victrack network
Great footage mate. Looks like a decent hill
Do trains go through everyday? How do you know when to be there?
Pretty much every day there's something climbing it, though they're often in the night.
Sometimes if I see someone else post a sighting early enough I can get over to see it or get a heads up about something running.
Question 8104 & 8146 are these the two locos that were always in the company pf each other ?
Locos often get stuck together for a couple of weeks at a time but I haven't noticed these two being inseparable.
Sorry mate 1 in 50 grade.
Is it still measured in feet ?
Same either way, 1 metre (foot) increase in height over 50 metres (feet) of horizontal distance travelled
Since when do NR class locos haul grain trains???
The NR's were being trialled with holding a loaded train on the Avoca line with just the loco brakes with the intention to put them on the Merbein containers for DOO operation and the grainy was just a convenient train to use.
They failed.
NR's frequently ran Manildra drought-buster grains from Parkes to South Australia in partnership with 82's back in 2019/2020 as well.
NRS will all end up in bulk as the 92 93 94 take over and the old 3000hp units eventually get retired 😢
What I love to hear 🌋.
Cool trains
1:02:27 what was that??? What happend???
They were trying to cross the tracks but tripped on the ballast
