3 HUGE Hits in 1988…Then GONE! Does Anyone Know WHERE the HELL the SINGER is? | Professor of Rock

  • A lot of people forgot about this band from the latter part of the 80s… Today’s act actually scored three US Top 10 hits from their debut album All That Jazz. The Sophista pop band named Breath pulled off an 80s hat trick... Not an easy feat. Especially since up until then they were riding out a losing streak of four failed singles. They were all but done. But it would be an impressive comeback and the perfect underdog story… seemingly setting them up for a long and prosperous career. First Hands To Heaven stole the #2 spot. Then came How Can I Fall at #3 and then Don’t Tell Me Lies at #10. This band should’ve been huge. They had the talent, and their lead singer David Glasper had a breathtaking voice. So what happened? Why are they all but forgotten today? Was it a case of the sophomore slump? Or is there some other reason they dropped off the map? Stick around, as we get to the bottom of this one, and try to figure out where in the world their singer is… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. If you remember the push button radios from the cab of a pickup you’ll dig this channel of musical nostalgia Make sure to, subscribe below right now. you will dig this channel. We also have a patreon you'll want to check out. It helps us keep it a daily channel and we bring you in as an honorary producer on each episode.
It’s time for another edition of our series Bottled Lightning where we celebrate a song or album that was king for a day We haven’t done one of these in a while. … Here we honor artists and bands and that rocketed up the charts… but for reasons unknown weren’t able to sustain that success. Called by some ‘one-hit wonders’, we celebrate them instead as lightning in a bottle. On previous episodes we have covered Broken Wings by Mr. Mister, Wishing Well by Terence Trent D’Arby, and She Drives Me Crazy by Fine Young Cannibals.
Today we are showcasing the stylings of British Sophisti-pop sensation Breathe, and their 1987 album All That Jazz. More of a one-album wonder, as I mentioned, Breathe scored three Top 10 singles on the Hot 100, including the heart-wrenching beautiful #2 hit Hands to Heaven. But after a promising start that extended into 1989, Breathe faded into obscurity. On this episode we’re figuring out why.
Breathe initially formed in London, England back in 1982. But back then they went by the name Catch 22. Fronted by vocalist David Glasper, the band was made up of a group of longtime friends who all attended school together in Hampshire. The other founding members were guitarist and keyboardist Marcus Lillington, bassist Phill Harrison, drummer Ian Spice, aka Spike, and Micael Delahunty on bass-guitar.
Glasper remembering the band’s origins said, “I was 17 when the band started… the other guys were two years younger than myself... we had bands that we loved, but it was so far apart in musical tastes... Marcus and Phill were into things like Led Zeppelin and Floyd… I was into the Eagles, Little Feat, some soul stuff. Spike was probably into heavier, sort of rock music. So we had all these different kind of styles, which at first was just like a terrible mixture…”

Thanks for bringing back such great memories. In March of 1988, just six weeks before graduation from the University of Florida, I met a sophomore from Panama City. I was from Tallahassee, and would be heading cross-country to the University of Michigan that fall. Our long-distance relationship lasted four years and included extended phone calls, mix tapes with songs like “Hands to Heaven,” and many other young love tropes. It all worked out, though. We live in Panama City and celebrated our 30th anniversary last fall.

    I KNOW WHERE HE IS!
I met David Glasper when I was living/traveling through northern Thailand in 2012'ish'. I was keeping watch and living on the grounds of a strange outdoor rock climbing park at the time when I was asked by the owner of the park to set up a tent for a musician that would be staying for a couple of days. He showed up an hour later (I, of course had no idea who he was when he first arrived) and I thought him to be just a laid-back, British fellow lugging around an acoustic guitar. A few of us went out to dinner that night and when I found out that he'd been living in Thailand for many years I asked him how he survived financially. (This was a common question I asked long-term travelers so that I might glean insight into extending my travel longevity). When he informed me that he was surviving on "royalties from some hits he'd written in the 80's" (I am a former musician and current obsessed music junkie) my interest was peaked. Eventually, after he told me the name of the band and added details I recalled how much I had actually loved his band (it was, curiously enough the 2nd album that I had discovered and loved) and realized how often I'd peered at his face as I listened to the CD over and over (His face is on the cover). We returned to the campsite and David and I and one other ended up hanging out around a campfire. It was around this fire that David shared his "story" with the two of us. It was a heartbreaking and tragic story that became even more involved and bizarre (a "sometimes reality is stranger than fiction" kinda tale) as it continued and, like Marcus, I really don't feel like it should be mine to share. He thanked us profusely for letting him share the story without judgement. I ended up leaving a day after while David stayed (as far as I know) a little while longer . It was a surreal, magical experience that I certainly will never forget. David is a super-kind, very likable guy and I really enjoyed spending some time with him. As far as I know, he is still living in Thailand (I do still have his 2012 phone number . . . )

Thank you for writing this. I know the story, it's heartbreaking.
He released an album in around 2012, his voice is still incredible, but then he faded out of sight again, only to be seen sometimes on his bike.

POR, I want to thank you for your music channel. My husband and I were high school sweethearts and graduated high school in 1986. We were married in 1992 the 1980s were awesome and I don’t think modern music can hold a candle for the 80s and some of the 90s, unfortunately our oldest son passed away in 2018 at 21 years old and on May 24, 2023. My husband passed away from a stroke. My grief is overwhelming on a day-to-day basis but recently I found your music channel and listening to 80s music has given me comfort when nothing else has. When I first heard “Hands to Heaven” I was 14 years old. When I was younger, I sang in musicals and solos in church. I hit puberty at about 12 and lost control of my vocal instrument. I stopped singing all together. After I heard David Glaspers voice, I knew I had to get my voice back.
I spent the next two years singing along to every song on “All that Jazz” before I sang any solos again. I went on to sing in my States high school honors choir; became a voice major in college performing in 2 choirs and 2 accapella groups; and wrote and recorded 2 albums with a college buddy.
I almost gave up singing at 13, but it was David Glasper and the incredible music of Breathe that helped me find my voice again. Music has given me so much joy and so many opportunities, and it was the music of Breathe that reignited my passion.
If anyone has not heard Breathe’s second album “Peace of Mind” do yourself a favor and give it listen. I believe it is one of the best albums from top to bottom I’ve ever heard. Every song is a masterpiece of melody and arrangement.

After the band broke up, one of Glasper's close family members passed away. This sent him into depression and to escape, he fled to Thailand, where he's been ever since. Spike's cause of death has never been revealed, but it was rumored back in the day he OD'd. I read several years ago, though, that Spike had allegedly gone to Thailand to visit Glasper and died in a car accident there.
Regardless, talented group of guys. I bought a re-release of All That Jazz awhile back, which includes a bunch of remixes and a few songs that were not included on the original American album. 🥰

Coincidently- Belinda Carlisle also had 3 Top 10 singles in 1988. She had a #1 (Heaven is a place on Earth), #2 (I Get Weak), and #7 (the exquisite Circle in the Sand). In the year-end chart- Belinda came in at #7 for the year with Heaven and BREATHE came in at #9 for the year 1988- with Hands to Heaven. They were very lucky to open for her- she was at her peak in 1988 and gave them huge exposure. Breathe hit #2 with Hands to Heaven, #3 How can I fall, and #10 with Don't tell me lies. As explained, They did pull off 2 more top 40 singles with their 1990 second album and then they disappeared. I am glad that you brought these 5 hit singles back to the front of our memories. 1988 was my favorite 80s year in music. The year had everything. That being said, Breathe having 5 Top 40 singles is impressive especially since back then you actually had to earn a Top 10 hit- not just debut there for a week and then disappear.

We shared a kiss and danced to this song one sunny warm afternoon in the Dish room of the dining hall. Promises to stay in touch were made, and broken by both of us over the fall, but we had that dance. Prophetically it was "Hands to Heaven. I sang that to her that day as we danced. and as the song faded away we embraced. What a wonderful time and a precious memory of a much more innocent time. I was in my car driving anywhere and nowhere all at once, trying to figure what had just happened. A few hours earlier, my girlfriend -- my first serious girlfriend -- had broken up with me over the phone.
We had been together for nearly a year and had even begun talking about marriage. If there had been any clues, I certainly hadn't noticed them. Everything looked good.
Until I heard her telling me over the phone that she had never considered us as anything more than just friends -- and that she had been cheating on me for a while.
"I must pack my bags and say goodbye."
Very few lines have hit me in the moment like that did on that day.
There is a happy ending. A year later, I started dating someone new, and I soon discovered she is the most wonderful woman in the world.
We've been married for more than 30 years.
On that depressing July day in 1988, no one could have convinced me that having to say goodbye was a good thing.
It turned out to be the most fortunate heartache I've ever experienced.

Breathe was a little part of me getting married. Loved the first album, but in '88 still bought cassettes. In 92, that tape broke but it was out of print and I couldn't find a tape or CD in any used music store. Fast forward to late 97. After a couple of months flirting, finally got the pretty blonde at work to go on a date with me, and it was wonderful. Two days later, I went to her house and we decided to go to pizza together. We took her car. She had the Breathe "All that Jazz" cassette playing. I said, "I've been looking for that tape for years! Can I borrow it?" It was like the last perfect piece of a puzzle. Technically, it was our third night of dating and I told her I loved her. After 3 weeks of dating we were engaged and 5 weeks later we were married. We've been together over 25 years now. And we still listen to Breathe together. . . I did find a CD once Ebay became a big thing, lol.

The fall of 88 I was going through a a breakup with someone I had been with for 3 years. She was off to college 70 miles away and at the time she was ready for the end of the relationship, while I was still grasping at anything. This song came out and I went and purchased the cassette and played it over and over. I also played it for her when she came home and even though she liked the song it didn't ring true to her like it did to me. She took a part of my heart when she left and when this song would come on I would go back in time to that breakup and the pain would be fresh. Even to this day that pain lingers when I hear this song. I would never 'not' want to hear it though. That breakup also gave me strength and helped make me who I am. There are a few other songs that also take me back to this time, and the pain that I experienced from it, but this one is the one that always stung the most.

Hands to Heaven got a fair amount of play on the Armed Forces Network Radio station in Germany during the summer of '88. That was my first duty assignment after training, and I remember it very clearly. I ended up buying the album sometime before I left in 1990, but I'm not exactly sure when. It wasn't a bad album, but it kinda fell off my radar pretty quickly. Flash forward to about 10 years ago, and I finally got around to ripping all my CDs to MP3, and I re-listened to the entire album. I think the reason Hands to Heaven did so well is due to the timing of the release and the airy sound they used. There were two huge hit singles from box office hits that charted just before that song was released. One was the famous Top Gun track "Take My Breath Away" and then came "She's Like the Wind" from Dirty Dancing. They had a similar vibe so their song had an added nostalgic effect, sort of like a dream you can't quite remember.

Breathe will always be a huge part of the soundtrack of my life! I will never forget their music and that is a beautiful thing. Those memories will be with me forever. Thank you, Breathe; you may be gone but never forgotten! That is the beauty of music…it will live on forever. Thank you, Professor of Rock for this “lost” treasure!

Recently got their album ‘All That Jazz’ and the follow-up (as well as a few 12” singles including ‘Hands To Heaven’) on vinyl for dirt cheap and they are ace! The albums are right-up there with their sophista-pop contemporaries such as Curiosity Killed The Cat, Johnny Hates Jazz and Living In A Box. Thanks for this episode on a heavily-underrated band Professor, long time fan. 👊

Oh good God I have waited so long for you to cover this song and album!
Prof. Hands to Heaven has genuinely haunted me since I first heard it that very year. I would’ve been almost 9yrs old.
Impossible to find for me so (sorry to admit) sometime around ‘02/‘03 found it on limewire.
A masterpiece in its own right.
An ex girlfriend emigrated to southern France in 1999. 2001 briefly returned for a month. We spent every possible minute together and then she had to return. Poetic really. This is the song that punctuated a bittersweet chapter for me and helped annotate another stage in the soundtrack of my life.
As Bruce Hornsby sagely put it, “That’s Just The Way It Is.”

I remember Breathe in sophomore year high school - late 1987 early 1988 - their two songs Hands To Heaven and How Can I Fall on the radio and on MTV
My Sophomore high school (1987-1988) was the academic school year of Breathe , Glass Tiger , The Hooters and The Cutting Crew - great memories of those bands (the 1 hit or 2 hit or 3 hit wonder bands I call them and then faded away )

Hands to Heaven was an all-time great, one of the most incredible soft-rock ballads in a year in which the soft-rock ballad was king. David Glasper and Marcus Lillington may have disagreed about whether anything on the second album lived up to the level of "All that Jazz", but to be honest, nothing could have lived up to "Hands to Heaven".

It always gets me when he sings "Goodbye" at the end of Hands to Heaven. It just feels genuine.
Breathe seemed to have come in about 3 years too late. All That Jazz feels like a last gasp of 80s pop, new enough to attract attention but too mired, stylistically, with all that had come before. The late 80s seems to littered with "should have beens."
