  • Coming up, it's the story of Queen and their #1 rockabilly smash, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, one of the best-selling singles of 1980. Although the song was a tribute to the King of Rock n’ Roll Elvis Presley, its genesis had nothing to do with hound dog, or a pilgrimage to Graceland… It was actually conceived while Freddie Mercury was taking… a bubble bath. He ran it into the studio immediately and recorded it before he forgot it. Brian May added his parts and John Deacon and Roger Taylor were on fire during the session… It was so good that many people thought it was a new song by Elvis. The crazy details of this international smash that was rushed from a hotel bathtub to a recording studio are NEXT on Professor of Rock.

You know, in the world of rock n’ roll, reality often beats fiction. That's what makes these stories so thrilling and unexpected. Throughout the Rock Era, hit records sprung up from all sorts of places, sometimes out of the blue. Sure, some artists may have had a formula, but for the four members of Queen, it was more like a spontaneous trip to the studio, with little or no ideas in mind.
And when it came to their biggest chart hit, the spark of inspiration struck Freddie Mercury while he was enjoying a bubble bath at the Bayerischer Hof Hotel in Munich, Germany. Do you recall the last time you had a bubble bath, or even just a nice, hot soak in the tub? It's been ages for me, I think since I was a little boy, but I remember that having a bubble bath was a rare treat. For Freddie Mercury having a bubble bath was one of his favorite ways to pamper himself. It was also a cherished escape from the demands of rock stardom. Whenever he could steal a moment, he enjoyed a nice, relaxing bath. Having a bathtub in his suite was a non-negotiable requirement, something hotel management simply had to accommodate.
As the 1970s came to a close, Freddie and Queen found themselves in a bit of a slump. The band was striving to regain their momentum following the underwhelming sales of the Jazz album in 1978. While Jazz wasn't a flop, its sales fell significantly short of the high standards set by Queen's previous album, News of the World, released the year before. News of the World had sold over 4 million units, compared to 2.5 million for Jazz.
The band was in Munich, because they had heard that there was a great studio there called Musicland. Sounds like that old record store chain that had locations in shopping malls in the 70s and 80s. I loved Musicland, Tower Records, and Record Town, back in the day.
The Queen quartet had found a studio to record their next record, but other than the glowing recommendation of where to make that album, they had nothing, they were fresh out of ideas for new material… It was all par for the course for Queen

In 1980 I took my 6 year old to the Queen concert in Seattle. My son was wearing a powder blue leisure suit due to it being picture day. My son seemed to be loving the concert and took off his jacket, vest and shirt. He was doing a pretty good Freddie Mercury impression. I spent a good portion of the concert trying to keep the screaming teenage girls away from my son.

This song reenergized the rockabilly movement in the 80's dragging The Blasters. Stray Cats, Shakin' Stevens and others along with it while also rejuvenating the careers of Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. A simple, finger snapping' catchy pop song was incredibly influential to music in the early 80's and rarely receives the credit it deserves. Thanks for the video, you always do a great job bringing these old songs to life.

I'd never heard that some people thought it was an Elvis song, since he had been dead three years when this song came out. If Elvis's label had something this fantastic, they wouldn't have sat on it for 3 years!
Now if someone had told me it was Dave Edmunds the first time I heard it, I might have believed that. I think Dave was recording with a brand new rockabilly band in 1980, some crazy kids called the "Stray Cats". Wonder what ever happened to them? (JK, Brian Setzer is still setting hearts afire at live shows, many near me in SoCal, but I can't afford concert tickets)
I believe Freddie could have sung in any musical genre and I would still forget to breath, lost and mesmerized in his voice.

Queens' first four albums when they were rockers still were the best, in my opinion. I saw them at one of the State theaters in downtown Cleveland in 1975. They all had long hair, flowy satin outfits; the best that I remember them.
The concert started with, 'Now I'm Here' with a dark stage that flashed to light on the symbol crash, then roared to life with the guitar opening! It ended with 'White Queen'. Fantastic show, one of the best I've attended. I liked them much better when they embodied rock and roll...

I liked the song due to it's sound as my mom is an Elvis fan so it came naturally. I fell in love with the song after I heard the Chipmunk version of the song on Chipmunk Punk later on. It was simple yet catchy song but didn't get over played like a lot of the pop songs then.

Queen has been my favorite band since I 1st heard Seven Seas of Rhye. Unfortunately-air play release only. Had to wait til I had my Dad's cassette deck to make amixed tape from radio. Created 2 Queen lovers for them with my girls. Now I've created huge fans of 2 of my granddaughters.

This is my absolute favorite Queen song- it came out when I was 13. Besides the radio, the only way we could hear it was on the jukebox in the bars that we delivered papers to in our very small town. Our mom said we could only be in the bar if we were delivering papers BUT we used to turn on the outside speaker and send our friend into the bar to get a quarter from her dad. Then she would play Crazy Little Thing Called Love on the jukebox two times in a row! We only did that for this song! Fun memories!!

Freddie really wasn't a bad guitarist at all. He actually demonstrated on guitar the rift that he wanted Brian to play on Bohemian Rhapsody, right after "Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me." He played it and then Brian perfected it. I'm happy that I got to see Queen in 1978. I had already been a fan since 1974, and it was always a thrill year after year to hear what kind of a new sound they were going to come up with. When you thought you had them figured out, then they would throw everything way off course with something like Crazy Little Thing Called Love!
