    Diyin-Sheng Concerto «Taoyuan Wonderland»
    Composed by Wang Chenwei
Commissioned by the Taoyuan Chinese Orchestra, «Taoyuan Wonderland» presents the spectacular scenery of Taoyuan City, Taiwan through four sections.
    I. Yong’an Fishing Port: The slow wave-like notes of the Diyin-Sheng allude to a sunrise at Yong’an Fishing Port. The music accelerates into the main theme, which depicts the bustling of boats and seafood merchants.
II. Xiaowulai Waterfall: Rapid scales and arpeggios describe cascading water splashing against the waterfall’s rocks.
III. Seas of Lupins: The lupin, a flower symbolising motherhood for the Hakka people, blooms every February in Longtan District, Taoyuan, turning the meadows into seas of gold. The grace and beauty of the lupin are represented by the dance-like tune.
IV. Shihmen Dam: The grandeur of the Shihmen Dam and the picturesque scenery of the Shihmen Reservoir are depicted by the majestic music, building up to a climactic conclusion.
As the Diyin-Sheng mainly plays an accompaniment role in Chinese music, parts written for it are usually simple. The composer, himself a Diyin-Sheng player in his schooling days, sought to develop new techniques that maximised the capabilities of the instrument’s keyboard. With numerous fast notes and polyphonic passages, «Taoyuan Wonderland» can be considered the first virtuosic concerto composed for the Diyin-Sheng.
