wow!!!!! Someone just shared this song with me . (2023)...........onwards comes our help!!!!!!! It is not long....by Your grace - I shall hold on- I shall encourage my comrades to hold on!!!!!!
This hymn was written about the battle of Allatona, GA during the American Civil War. A small contingent of Federal troops held a fort protecting a large depot of food rations and were beseiged by a large rebel army and held back repeated assaults. General Sherman sent a dispatch to John Corse, the Commanding Officer: "Hold the Fort, for I am coming".
General Sherman himself wrote of the incident in a letter dated June 22, 1875. While he remembered some of the details used by Whittle at the Sunday School Convention, he also noted, "I do not think I used the words 'Hold the Fort'. "Sherman's memory was correct. The two messages sent by flag to Allatoona from Kennesaw Mountain on October 4, 1864, read as follows: "Sherman is moving in force; Hold Out! General Sherman says Hold Fast. We are coming."
@noturningbackever493 My ancestor was in the 39th Iowa infantry, which was heavily involved in that battle. His luck was to be assigned to Company D, which was on detached duty, guarding livestock pens, at the time of Allatoona.
