A few years ago I got a notice of cancellation due to a single damaged shingle. I called out a roofing company to repair. They found hail damage, and replaced the roof before the policy end date.
My old insurance had to pay $14k and lost my business. It was a win-win.

I know this is an older story, but just a few weeks ago I saw a report where two separate insurance companies had complete dropped all of their home owner insurance policies in southern California. Simply too many claims and they were losing money. So they just got out of the market entirely.
When I left Florida I got a notice from my insurance company that they were only going to offer home or renters insurance in Florida to active duty military personel stationed in Florida. Everyone else had six months to find another insurance company to deal with. That was back in 2007.

How much did you pay for a new roof?

My homeowners insurance tried to drop me because i had the hurricane shutter closed on my bedroom window. I have it closed because it blocks out the sun and i have to sleep during the day since i work nights. They tried to say i had it closed because i was trying to hide a broken window. I was literally forced to take it down and send them a picture of my bedroom window to prove to them it wasn't broken so they wouldn't just drop me. Id also love to know how they got access to my backyard to even see my window since it faces the rear of the house. How are these companies allowed to just invade your privacy and trespass on your land without even giving any notice? And then just threatening you with cancelation without any hard proof of anything. It's insane.

AAA is absolutely the worst. I'd been with them for 25+ years as a auto club member, I never used them until just a few years ago. I had to have a car towed 3 years ago, the driver who showed up was so high I wouldn't let him tow my car. I've had 3 incidents in the last year with road hazards giving me flat tires on 3 different vehicles. In every case my jack wouldn't life the car, the lug wrench wouldn't loosen the nuts, in one case the jack retainer was installed so tightly from the factory I couldn't get the jack out. In each case I called AAA, and in every case I waited hours and nobody ever showed up. I had to call a local wrecker to bring a jack, impact wrench, etc just to help me change the tire. I called AAA to cancel, it was totally painless like they were either having a lot of cancellations or they wanted to get rid of me because I was actually trying to use what I was paying $100 a year for. Like I'd ever trust them for insurance.

"Because the pool was empty".....an empty pool can pop out of the ground because Hydrostatic pressure is the force exerted by water against the walls and floor of the pool. It's also the main reason why pools pop out of the ground. If the water level in the ground surrounding the pool rises too high, it can create a pressure imbalance that causes the pool to pop out of the ground. Never leave a pool or spa empty. They would be better off filling the pool with dirt and landscaping over it.

As a pool owner myself, draining a swimming pool is absolutely a reason for losing insurance on at least that part of your home. Pools are constructed to expect the pressure from thousands of gallons of water on them, if you drain a pool for an extended amount of time, the ground beneath it can and will shift and result in extensive damage to your pool that could cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair and is unfair to expect an insurance company to cover. if you did it to yourself.
I’m no fan of insurance companies but this is clearly the fault of the homeowners themselves for not understanding what they’re doing to their own pool. They are intentionally doing something that will destroy part of their home that is covered under insurance, and that is grounds for not renewing their policy.
You’re never supposed to do this, these are people who never learned how to take care of delicate expensive property who then raise a karen type stink when nobody wants to deal with their self-induced problem.

It's pretty bad out here. We had a wildfire in 2020. 900 houses were lost just in our fire. Our county is one of the worst when it comes to rebuilding- less than 30 homes have been approved or are in the final approval stages nearly 3 years after the fire. About 100 homeowners are in the preliminary permit stage. Many more are still battling the county to get permits to rebuild their homes. About 1/3 of all these fire victims have simply given up- took what their insurance gave them and started over somewhere new. Many of us who escaped the fire are on pins and needles waiting for our insurance companies to drop us. There are options but they are very expensive. Some policies (via the state of California) have quadrupled or more in price. One homeowner in our community went from paying $1700 a year for homeowners insurance to over 7k per year because his policy he had for over 20 years and only one minor claim, was canceled.

I don’t think there is a “law” to require homeowners insurance, I could be wrong though. Usually it’s mortgage companies that you make your house payment to that require insurance. In the event a house gets damaged the homeowners insurance will then rebuild the home or payoff the home so the lender gets it money. If you own your home outright you don’t have to have insurance but you would be out all that money if something happened. I do agree with you on the CRV thing!

    • @alexsystems2001
      @alexsystems2001 ปีที่แล้ว

@@sgraham4533 CRV is “California Redemption Value” I think. It is the deposit you pay when you buy recyclable things like soda or water in cans or bottles and when you recycle it you are supposed to get it back. The problem with it is a lot of places that used to take the cans and bottles back closed down and technically the retailer that takes the deposit from you is supposed to give you the deposit back when you bring the cans and bottles back but they don’t do that either so some people have to drive more than it’s worth to redeem your deposit. I had 5 large trash bags of crushed water bottles and got about $12. In total round trip it was about a 45 minute drive and with gas being $5.00/gal here in California, recycling was hardly worth it. So most people don’t recycle and let the state or whomever keep the deposits, so if most cans and bottles go unrecycled and the state is mandating people pay it but not mandating anyone gives you your money back, they need to stop charging it. Just like our stupid plastic bag ban. It’s 10 cents per bag required by government BUT it goes into the retailers pocket, it doesn’t even go to the state for anything, it just makes the retailers richer.

A poorly maintained property appearance on the outside may suggest to an insurance provider that the inside is also poorly maintained. An empty swimming pool without safety fencing around it may worry the insurance carrier as well. That man's house in Oakley, CA has a car parked adjacent to the side of his house in an area that was never designed for vehicle storage. I can understand why that insurance carrier dropped him. No brainer. Insurance companies have to manage their risks very carefully, especially in light of the many huge catastrophies that the US has seen in recent years. Property owners need to stay on top of maintenance & safety issues (ie: the horrible Oakland Hills fire that burned over 5000 homes 20+ yrs ago could have been avoided if property owners cleared/cut back vegitation too close to their homes "annually". All my neighbors in Daly City, CA were doing that annually in the 1970's. It took a horrific wildfire for the Oakland & Berkeley, CA firefighters to learn that life & property saving lesson 😢. That is truly a shame. San Mateo County fire officials 😊 were on top of their game in the 1970-90's while the Alameda County fire officials were twiddling their thumbs 😢, and the driving distance between those 2 regions is only 1 hr or so).

They do this in Texas too. An empty pool is far more dangerous than one filled with water. If you don't want your pool anymore, you fill it in. It isn't like you have anything to lose as once you leave that plaster open to the sun for 2 or 3 weeks you have ruined it anyway.

The problem with the pool situation is if an intruder gets on the property, they could fall right into the shell. Yes it's trespassing, but it's still a lawsuit. The best option would be to fill it in or cap it.

It is true. Some person could actually fall off the edge into the empty pool. Management ofAn apartment complex that had a drained pool, was threatened by residents with a law suit. The management wanted to argue the point but the insurance and city backed the residents. The charges and fines would have supported the Civil lawsuits.
I lived in a complex which had a pool full of gravel and sand on top.

Obviously, Debbie doesn't comprehend the theory of insurance. It's kind of like schools. If you own a home, but don't have kids, should you be exempt from paying school taxes? Or road taxes? Never had a fire, but should you not pay taxes that support the fire department? Geez.

An empty pool can raise up and crack due to pressure from below and the sides. Homeowners insurance does not want to cover the potential damage to the pool. The bottom line is that you cannot force a business to take you on as a customer. Go buy your loaf of bread somewhere else.
