This is the 2nd episode of my how-to videos for fellow synth geeks: Sheenah’s Excellent Synth Adventures. Don't forget to hit SUBSCRIBE to be alerted when the next episode comes out!
In this video, I talk specifically about how to perform arpeggiations live, or any other syncopated or percussive sound, from a synthesizer, while also performing with a live drumer or a drum machine (or both!). I share how I connect my gear using midi and sync my drummer and drum machine with my synthesizers so that everyone is performing to the exact same LIVE tempo!
I’m calling on you, my fellow synth geeks, to shoot hard topics at me as I will dive deeper into the EXCELLENT ADVENTURES OF SYNTHESIZERS!
Watch and comment on what you would like to hear about next!

ok so its for an analog gear controlling a rythm machine, how can I synch Fantom X6 and MC-909 own arpeggiators with themself over midi, needs some sysex code, or can I synch them via the midi cables (in-out) ? So I am trying to use the X6's arp to activate the mc-909's arp with the same beat on the x6 ( dual arpeggiator, just like on the korg M50) one is for melody and the other for drums. Thanx.

If you would like to see this in action, here is a live recording where the drummer is playing along to the click track I’m sending him from the Prophet. You can hear the syncopated track from the Prophet-6 playing and how everything lines up: th-cam.com/video/qkhQwEdyjcw/w-d-xo.html

How would you integrate this with a Backing Track live? Thanks so much for the video!

Could I play/trigger a backing track from direct from my drum machine or would I need another piece of hardware?

It’s actually perfect for backing tracks! What are you playing your backing track on?

For instance, I play backing tracks off of my Toraiz, which is a drum machine and sequencer. The backing tracks are sent to the main L/R outputs and then the click track is sent out to a separate channel to the drummer (and is not sent to the main outputs).

@@sheenahko thanks for the reply! Sorry I'm new to this kind of live setup and just trying to get my head round it
I'd looked at getting a Roland Tr 8s Drum Machine so I could use it in the same way which you do? I'd just import my backing track into the drum machine and when I press it it'll play the backing track to the main L/R & click track to drummers ears at the same time?

    • @sheenahko

@@cameronrobertson5209 I believe the TR 8 has separate outputs so you should be able to assign the click track to one of the other outputs. So as long as you program a click track that goes with your backing drum track, it should all line up- you could just make the click track inside the drum machine.

I feel like this technique is more effective when the drummer has been bribed with cookies. (see also: metronomes turn D- drummers into B+ drummers, it's self-production magic!)
