  • A frequently returning question is whether a network player sounds better using a network cable or wifi. An easy question so let’s see if there is an easy answer.

    Good stuff Hans. I have my streaming on my Plex throughout my house. I have an access point in the living room thta allows me to use either 2.4 or 5 GHz so Im covered. My 3 bedroom house is one floor and only 1400 square feet. I use hardwire CAT5 or CAT6 ethernet cable to hook up my main Fiber Optic 100 GB router to my access point. working good so far. Yes #stayathome. Ive been home since the lockdow in Feb/March as I am a high risk patient with low immune system so I have to be extra careful. take care and God bless

    Hello Hans, I was wondering why, seeing as you have a wifi mesh set-up, you didnt offer the option of including a mesh node as part of the hifi equipment set up, and then connecting a streaming source to the LAN with an internet cable? The second benefit would be better wifi access in your listening room as well, no?

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When I use Wifi, it's automatically the Mesh network. But I prefer cabled network over audiophile switches.

    Hello Hans, I hope you are keeping well.
    I don't wish to oversimplify this subject but it seems that under IDEAL CONDITIONS Wi-Fi could be the better choice than wired ethernet because of the reasons you have mentioned. One thing I could not understand although, was your comment (at 0:36 ) "That doesn’t mean they [people] can access your network but it does mean they can use a part of the available bandwidth."
    I Probably don't understand the fundamentals but how can someone use a portion of your bandwidth if they are not connected to that network?

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Each Wifi channel has a given bandwidth (the numbers if bits per second it can transport). If only one user logs in, he has the full bandwidth, if 10 users are logged in, they each have one tenth of the bandwidth if they all use their max.

    • @leach720
      @leach720 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's how I understand it. I took your quote "they can access your network" as being "logged in," hence my confusion. Thanks for the clarification.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

    On a slightly related note, last night I was setting up a new device using Bluetooth. I noticed errors at the beginning of the stream where it would stutter. My phone was in the middle, with the bluetooth radio on. When I turned that off, it cleaned up the stuttering issue from the other device. 😁👍

    I currently use a Node 2i By Bluesound. And if im correct it is Not possible to operate in 5ghz WiFi mode, which i would like to do, unless you just unplug the Wired connection to Force the device to do so.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

      Correct, the wifi radios are switched off when the Ethernet connector is inserted.

    As far as I know, the FCC only dictates the amount of EM emissions a device is allowed radiate.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know. Apart from there being territories not governed by the FCC, FCC and similar bodies in other countries have minimum requirements that not always converge with the needs for very good sound.

    I believe I'm right in saying that Auerlic now recommend using WiFi rather than ethernet with their streaming devices on the basis that they think the latter could introduce more noise than the former. I find this interesting, as we routinely associate WiFi with unwanted noise, but can overlook noise problems with cabled solutions.

      @@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel Hi Hans, have you had a chance to test wifi connection against wired connection in your systems? I use a Project stream box s2 utlra and find the wifi way better than the wired connection, however I use standard CAT7 cable and a Cisco switch, no audiophile switch.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

      Under perfect circumstances WiFi might sound better. But I prefer a cable and Audiophilia switch for a top sound all the time.

    Thank you for your thoughts about wifi, there are SEVEN WiFi networks that my phone can see, two of which are mine! Any thoughts about Ethernet over Power lines?

    • @psycholocke4090
      @psycholocke4090 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      if i might try to give an answer:
      it greatly depends on what you need. Ethernet over Powerlines are usually only an advantage if installation of ethernet cables is not possible or is uneconomical for the needs like low bandwidth only digital tcp communication. or if you only need a point to point connection.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ethernet over power lines apparently works for audio but I have no hands-on experience with it. It does pollute the mains feed, of course.

      I use an app called "Wifi Analyzer" to see on what channels my neighbours' networks are. I used to set the channel of my wifi network to a "less crowded" one. Then I discovered "auto-select" and that seems to work like a charm. The only problem is that I see different signals when I move from one floor to another, so supposedly I can only optimise my channel selection for the floor where my router is.

    • @erlendse
      @erlendse 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ethernet over power lines: avoid if you can.
      It basically sends a high-frequency signal over the power wires.
      Another problem is that the power-wires work as a antenna when used like that.
      You just inject noise into the whole house!
      The power-cables are not coax and are not made for RF.

    Key area is a smart switch, the smarter the switch the more accurate the sound i would say. Thus those low lag high end gaming nics and switches will far betterfor audio.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      low lag is no issue for sound. It is even likely that those switches are noise than normal switches.
