    Such a helpful video! I didn't do so well last year with my succulents. (My cacti babies are thriving!) I splurged yesterday and planted a bunch of new ones. With your guidance, I think I may be on the road to success! My new succulent babies and I thank you!

    If people are stuck for rainwater I’ve just been told recently to use the drops you put in aquariums that take out the chemicals out to make it safe for fish. Thought this was a great tip👍

    Aquarius I use a small soft paintbrush to clean my succulents and cacti. Especially when perlite gets trapped in between the leaves after watering. It's a great way to move dust and debris from plant crevices without damaging the plant.

    Great tip about watering echeverias. I only have one in my collection (can't normally grow them due to light conditions) and it has lost its lower leaves. I will be sure to water from the bottom in future. I must say that Sean is a very understanding BF. My husband is always telling me off for buying more house plants! Anyway, hope you have a fantastic week love paula xxxx p.s I have taken some cuttings for you from my grans Christmas cactus and they seem to be doing well at the mo. Lyn this video was amazing! I have so many answers now!i bought two echeverias from lidl, just like your echeverias, and I was so confused why the leaves were rotting at the base and caused one of them to become spindly. I really couldn't understand because they get plenty of sun. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful video! Again reflecting on how gorgeous all your plants are.

    Spot on Lyn! I find watering to be the most difficult for most plants; especially succulents/cactus. It is always best to understand the natural habitat or the hybridized parent's habitats to get a thorough understanding of just what the plant ill truly require. The trick is to master the needs of one's entire collection. :-/

    This was very helpful. I tend to lose a couple desert plants over the winter every year and I I think I tend to underwater in the summer as a result. It took my two tries to successfully overwinter a Crassula. I work in an outdoor garden centre so I’m pretty new to indoors and I live in zone 4b so the winter kicks my ass every year. Also the ph of my tap water is 8.2! I always let it decholrinate overnight before I use it but I hadn’t considered ph

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lauren :-D so happy that you found the video helpful, yes the pH of your tap water is high if you can collect rainwater if its possible this is best, but its not always easy to collect, leaving the water dechlorinate overnight helps a lot too, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Saturday XXXX

    Great video. Thanks. I'm learning so much for your channel. I used to get cactuses as a kid and kill them. It turned me off of them. But now I'm ready to try again as I have experience with other plants. Wow those black plants. I'm not into succulents as much but the idea of a plant that looks like a metallic black flower is cool. And you have a giant crystal! I like them because I'm a fan of SpaceGodzilla.

    Hi Lyn! I love the unorganized variety of plants in your conservatory. Since they are not arranged according to species, each one is a surprise when you see it. I also enjoyed seeing your mixed cactus bowls. Do you only have them in your conservatory? The bowl with the agave and mammillaria gracilis cactus is really nice. I saw others too! Do you enjoy making the mixed bowls? I got a good look at your conservatory in this video, but have you made a video on its best features and why you have certain plants in there and how you like to enjoy that space? That is a dream area! Maybe we'll see more of it this year.

      So happy you loved the video of the plants in the conservatory Terry :-D I don't have this conservatory any more as I moved from that house about 5 years ago from the South of Ireland to live in Belfast, and I have most of the cacti and succulents in a polytunnel in our garden now, the conservatory was lovely to display all of the plants and because it was clear glass it was excellent lighting for them, our polytunnel we have now is green covered and plastic and not the best for cacti as it filters out some of the natural light, and ideally I would love to replace the polytunnel with a glass greenhouse like this conservatory, it would look so much more aesthetic in the garden and would allow more light for the cacti, I have a few of the mixed cactus bowls in the polytunnel now and they are great for planting together to make wonderful bowl garden arrangements, I really enjoy making them too, thanks so much Terry for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Thursday XXXX

      Hi Lyn, loving your videos and tips but there is one thing that I am confused about, watching your video on watering, it looks like you have your cacti sitting in water trays, does this not encourage them to sit in the runoff water??

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So happy you love my channel :-D If getting bare root cactus plants in winter its best to pot them up in cactus soil and keep them totally dry until the Spring before watering them, but if your cacti plants are Epiphytic cacti like the Epiphyllums, or Christmas cacti etc, then it would be best to lightly water them, but if they are the Desert cacti keep them dry until the spring time :-D if you are not sure what type of cacti you have, here is a link to a video I have made on How to tell the difference between Desert Cacti and Epiphytic Cacti : th-cam.com/video/4bidqMCpBu8/w-d-xo.html Good luck with your new plants and thanks so much for your wonderful comments and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle and have a plant powered fun day ahead XXXXX

    Hey Lynn, I'm getting conflicting info on Trichocereus cacti. Are they tropical (not desert), cold hardy down to 1.6C / 35 degrees F and require all day sun??? This is confusing. Thanks lady love!

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, the good news is Trichocereus cacti are very cold hardy as long as they can be kept dry with no watering at all given in Winter, they can withstand 35F with no problems, they love as much sun as possible but in the Winter because they are not actively growing you can overwinter them in a bright position with less sunshine, but in Spring and Summer they love as much sun as you can give them, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Sunday XXXX

    Hi i have 3 nice catcus and i want to know if u increase pot size will cacti increase size

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Richard :-D its best to only increase the pot size just one size up from the pot it is already in, this is because repotting cacti into pots much bigger than the previous pot size can encourage the chance of root rot due to having too much soil space around their roots, cacti like to dry out fast in between waterings and its best to only repot into a pot size the next size up, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and have a wonderful plant powered new week XXXX

    I have accidentally took some of the
    Circles that grow spikes
    And I was wondering do they grow back ?

      Hi there :-) yes sometimes the spines will grow back where they have come off but not always, what will happen though is a thick skin 'Callus' will form over where the spines have come off and no harm will come to your plant :-) thanks so much for watching and sending heaps of love and happy growing from Ireland for a wonderful day XXXX

    Did you ever own the Cylindropuntia fulgida ('jumping cactus') and if yes, will you do a special video regarding that because this requires care and handle for it's own?

      Hi there :-) thanks so much for watching :-) I haven't got a Cylindropuntia fulgida in my collection yet but it is definitely one for my future wish list, I have heard that it can be one of the most 'lethal' ones for 'biting' us with haha! when I treat myself to one of these in the future i will make an update vid on it :-) sending you lots of love and happiness from right across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic Tuesday today XXXXX

      This may be a dumb question, but does the cactus actually jump, or do you have to touch it for it to attack?
