Ray, I know you probably don't read comments on YFM anymore, but I just wanted to say thanks. This song got me through a tough time in a job with long hours, terrible pay, serious health risks, and no breaks. Every night I'd get this song stuck in my head until I finally did something about it, got off my ass, and applied for my local university. I'm back at school now, taking a risk in a major I love. It might not work out. I might never "take over the world," but at least I can say I gave it a shot. Thanks
Back in middleschool/highschool, this was a major jam for me and my best buddy. We were pretty close. In those days we used to play stuff on steam all the time and we'd watch youtube videos together over the internet with voice chat. It was great, it was like we had the same sense of humor, we were always on the same page. We used to quote the chorus on this all the time. Bryan was his name. Sometimes we'd get to school, or get home and get on voice chat: "What we gonna do tonight, Bryan?" "We're gonna take over the world." It was great to have that camaraderie with someone, and I've never really had that since. The feeling of an understanding, of having an equal in a world of chaos and confusion, someone you could trust. I was desperate for it. Time went by, and in the last couple years of school we started drifting apart. I think it was because people were changing and I wasn't changing with them. I got even more desperate for his time while he didn't need me anymore and was getting tired of me, and even though we walked together at graduation, once we graduated we never saw eachother again. He stopped getting on steam, stopped talking to me. I had to delete his number eventually because I just felt sad to look at it. I hated him for that for a long time. I lost my partner in crime, and I felt truly alone and worthless. Awake, I daydreamed of seeing him and getting to say "Fuck you" to his face for leaving me like that, like he would have to feel as bad as I did. At night, I always dreamed of happening to see him someplace, and instantly my bitterness would fade as I realized how much I just wanted to be his friend again. Then I'd wake up again and remember I was alone. I finally found the root of my depression after all this time, and for the first time in 10 years I finally don't feel hopeless, like I can move on. Last I heard a few years ago, my old buddy was just like me, stalling at home and not really accomplishing anything while our friends all went to college. I don't think I'll ever really get to have another friend like him, the kind of friend where you effortlessly get along, but I hope that life is good for him wherever he is. I still miss him after all this time, but I don't hate him anymore. It's so bittersweet to come back and listen to this now. Best of luck to you, wherever you are Bryan. "What we gonna do tonight?"
I remember when I was 9 I thought this was the best song ever, 8 years later as a 17 year old this is still the best song ever made. The older I got the better I learned the message behind this.

All these years later and I still think about this song, when it came out I was a sophomore in High School, I was sad and alone and had very few friends. I didn’t expect to graduate because I didn’t want to be around anymore. “My Grandmama used to tell me I’d be king” hits home heavy for me since my Grandma who raised me my whole life just passed away, she was my only friend for years.
