    Amazing how sonar has changed over the years!
    Watch this and the next episode together! Because? we live next to the Solway, and Whitehaven in Cumbria, UK but ours is not as warm as yours and the beach is not White.
    Always a great show Magnus & Wendy 💖 😍 👌 👍 👊 😊 🇬🇧

    I gave my daughter some money about 15 years ago and she disappeared for a few months, I had no idea where she had gone. It turns out she went to the Whitsundays to do her yacht skippers test, I was dead chuffed when she told me, being a sailor myself. She went to visit her brother in Sydney first and then out there to do the course. She had already done a whole lot of sailing on a catamaran, from the BVIs then Pananma, on to the Galapagos and on across the Pacific. Its nice to you sailing again, long may it continue.

    Lots of great memories in that one for us, even Solway pass ! Did the Whitsundays a couple of years ago in our 20ft Sunmaid trailer sailer, and can`t wait to get back up that way.

    I notice all the best boaters on TH-cam use Raymarine products like the Axiom. Likewise, it's a great piece of equipment.

    I used a panel of heavy polycarbonate set flush into the hull, so that water pressure held it in place as well as the silicone adhesive and some through hull countersink bolts set through O-rings to form a waterproof set of fastenings. In the inside of the hull on top of this polycarbonate panel I mounted a vertical tube of about one foot of PVC pipe cut to fit the panel so that the top was horizontal, this forming a reservoir of light oil. Into this light oil I sat the transducer element, the body being fixed to the side of the PVC tube so that it was central, by the use of a PVC spacer.
    The polycarbonate set into the hull beside the garboard strake has the exact same sound transmission characteristics as sea water. One just needs to keep the panel clean--and NOT antifouled. It is the trick Ice-Breakers use.
    Before cutting any holes in a perfectly good hull, it might be best y to make up a model and hang it from the side of the vessel or the stern to test it properly, and only make any permanent alterations if REALLY happy with the results.

    • @LifeinaNutshell
      @LifeinaNutshell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What sort of light oil did you use?

    • @MikeBanks2003
      @MikeBanks2003 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LifeinaNutshell I think it was soybean oil, but as long as it is not compressible any light hydraulic oil should do the trick. I used vegetable oil because I wanted it not to react with the epoxy glue I used to fit the pipe to the window. I must admit I did not originally fit this panel, it was done by the previous owner, I just improved on it. My device was not as elaborate as yours though, but it worked very will indeed.

    Good thing you were wearing a wet suit on your dive. Can you imagine all those creatures crawling around on your naughty bits? I always wear some skin when I dive after I went diving with tiny jellyfishes and stinging crinoids. Got a welt right near my bung hole!
