Possibly the punchiest synth. I owned Nova desktop and Nova XL keyboard which is Supernova II engine. This is definitely one of the best virtual analogs ever made. It has it's bugs and weak spots, but there is far more of the good stuff. I find the effects to really work well for synth sounds. I even like the metallic reverb. When it came out I remember people complaining that it sounds thin without FX which is definitely not true. It has a very thick sound, thick lower mids, possibly too thick and you have to EQ that out. For me it's the best synth for bases because it punches and has quite a bit of bottom end. The oscillator phase reset certainly helps with this. I might get one again.
My platinum is in it's flight box - breaking it out this weekend! :D Thanks for the inspiration, the Supernova is a forgotten gem - Novation need to have a look at it again, years ahead.

Current electronic music is soulless because it doesn't run on circuitry. Virtual instruments with never match up the the real thing, ever! That is the reason why electronic music from the 90s won't ever be beaten in terms of quality and warmth of sounds.
plugins sucks!!! Especially all those famous ones...they might be good for certain genres and yes times moved on and gave us stars such as avicii etc. but the soul of the 90s is hard to recreate with plugins only...possible but why not just use real instruments!
UNLESS....you delve into Osirus / OsTIrus. a free emulator that emulates the motorola chip found in these synths including Access Virus A/B/C/TI/TI2 etc and Supernova etc. It's WILD!

my favorite part has got to be 2:02 it's ridiculous how much that takes me back to the trance days of the late 90's early 2000's. I wanted one of these baby's but i had to settle for a JP-8000 but one day I will have this!!!! In fact, sell it to me! :D

Yeah I love the SN for that reason, it nails the late 90's trance. So what happened is this unit was defective so I had to return it. In the future I want to pick up a desktop Nova again. Dutch Force Deadline is one of my alltime favourites, still get chills.
Pure soft synth user here... but, frankly, if i had the money i'd purchase a hardware synth too. There's something about the tactile feeling, that is really attractive, if you only fiddle with virtual stuff. Nice sounds there. :)
Definitely. It's not just the hands on thing either, you can get midi controllers for example, but there is also something to the sound engines people have developed over the years, not everything is replaceable with something else.
As you have/had the Mininova too, and, as we all love comparisons :), what do you think about the Mini/Ultranova compated to the Supernova? I watched a lot of videos the last days, and, IMO, the Supernova sounds a bit more "dirty", has more beef, meaning that the envelopes just create a bit more bang with fast decay times, also audible in your video, and, overall, the Mini/Ultranova seems to sound a bit more "bland" in comparison. The price is definitely attractive ATM, you can get the Ultranova for 440 € here in Germany, but, i don't know, the Supernova seems to sound a bit better to me.
The feeling, easy editing, good keyboard, and that's about all advantages you get from having a synth like this. I get better sounds from Bazille, Diva, TAL-Sampler, Serum, Spire, and I have a couple of hardware samplers, too.
Sorry I only had the SuperNova 2 for a short while. There was something wrong with it, so I never had time to make a bank. I might buy a Nova Desktop and make a soundbank for that though.
I had one of these for a little while, I remember the unison on it sounded absolutely terrible, very heavily phased. But you made it sound nice, very similar to a lot of classic trance lead sounds from around 2000-2010.
2:03 how do you call that synth sound type? saw lead pluck? can you give me a recepie how to get the saw filter combination to sound that fat? is it filter drive or do you layer the saw with another oscillator for beefy low mids and low end?
I had a Nova II, but sold it to get a Virus Indigo, eventually it to for a TI 2. Can get much thicker leads out of the Virus, and that was always my problem with Novation synths. They were great for pads, but getting a nice detuned lead out of them was somewhat difficult. It was also somewhat difficult to get them to sound "nasty" Always did great bass sounds though. for their time, they were massive synths though.
yeah, that's why I like combining different synths in tracks, and play them all off their respective strengths (and shore up against their individual weaknesses). Get some great tunes that way
@@AiynZahevSounds I had the SN2 rack here in the UK but always wished I'd bought the keyboard. I used it at my mates studio and it was just such a high quality instrument mate ... If you have an amazing 61/88 key fully weighted controller keyboard already then yeah fair enough grab a rack but otherwise I would use the SN2 as my controller keyboard for everything else in the studio .... I am really tempted to grab the UltraNova at the minute but only one voice is kinda killing it for me when I got so used to running 4 out of the SN2 ... and believe me you would find a use for 4 on every track and wish you had more

Not sure if you're still reading comments on here, but would you be able to give me some pointers in recreating the first sound you play on this video? It's a square wave with short attack and release, with some distortion, but around the 0:22 mark you bring in some modulation. What is that? Sounds like Sync between Oscs 1 and 2, with LFO modulating the pitch of Osc 2, but I'm struggling to recreate it on my Novation KS4...

@@beatha5928 at this point I’d need to look in the manual again, but you have to set up unison with free running phase on the oscillators, there’s a mode for the oscillators where each one is 3 detunes waves as well. That and keep the filter resonance at minimum and turn up the high EQ
I found a part of it again. Novation had a what is now an unconventional way of naming the oscillator behavior. Inside the oscillators settings menu there’s a setting that is either percussive or ensemble. Percussive is phase reset mode and ensemble gives you free running oscillators. A lot of people miss this parameter because it’s buried and I think by default it might be set to percussive. You’ll only get a nice smooth unison in ensemble mode. You’ll find the info on Page 70 of the manual for the supernova 2.

I don't know what are your issues but if I had to suggest you one thing, I would tell you to detune your oscillators as fuck, than follow your inspiration when it's about tweaking effects or modulation.
I should say there is a High shelf EQ in the Nova synths that I cranked up really high, and then forgot about. So all these sounds have the high end boosted quite a lot, which will tend to make them sound thinner.
Their ultranova mini nova struggle from the same thin bland sound.Otherwise very deep.engines.to.program.The Novation Nova seems.the one with otb sound
yea, i absolutely love mine, i think the virus is too harsh and metallic sounding, while jp is more pleasing to the ear. Althought i have always liked the v-station and i always wanted to try out the supernova but i don't think it's worth the money right now.
Obviously, you don't own a SNiikb. I love my JP8000, too (along with my Viruses et al) but the SNiikb has a presence that NOTHING made before or since touches... That includes the TI2, the System-8, all of the Nord Leads, the AN1x, the Radias and Kingkorg (and ms2000), the Waldorfs, or anything else. It's too bad Novation tried to follow this with the today different, sonically vastly inferior JOKE of synths that don't deserve the Nova names (Ultra and Mini). Those aren't Novas any more than the Gaia is a JP-8000.
Aye, it is an epic monster worthy of its legendary status - use mine all the time. Although for plucks, it's kind of a PIA to work with - have to jump to the Blofeld or Virus for those, cause of that JP filter click. The SN here sounds pretty freakin' sweet for plucks too... might have to get one someday to add into the studio

i see you have the "Platinum" version of the Supernova 2. They should have kept the whole top as a silver color instead of changing the color of the panel having the voice selection buttons, display and arp controls to dark gray while keeping the lettering as black. God awful hard to read. One of the worst synth design decisions ever made. What were they smoking?
Say what you want but to me it sounds just like an average VSTi, not even top quality one. I am surprised. Terribly sounding distortion. Sounds so crappy digital it hurts my ears. Not everything that looks like hardware sounds like hardware, chaps!
