he's using two of the 3 legs which will give you 480. 3 of the legs will also give you 480. Any one leg and the neutral gives you 277. But any one leg to ground will give you 277 as well, so that's why he said he's using "two 277 hots"

Shouldn’t you ground the x2-x4-neutral wire as well? I think that would be the best overall way.

Yes, he’s should bond the X2-X4, it work like that, but I have had where the neutral switch legs
