Beat the path around Madison and Milwaukee to see these guys. Them, Luther Allison and Shortstuff were the bread and wine of upper midwest blues for this lil' white boy.
Can't believe it! I love S-S Band. I have an 2 albums purchased in maybe 71-72??....One song in particular I loved was Hush Hush. Wonder if anybody remembers it.....
What a great, great band. I got to see them at their regular Tuesday gig at The Quiet Knight, in a festival setting and at their "last" show (sometimes there's more than one). I got to talk with them each time and they were so nice to a young and enthusiastic me. Each guy was a top-notch musician but I was always enthralled by Rollo's playing and unique voice. They should have been a worldwide smash.
I agree. Some of the best bands that EVER were.. don't make it huge but SHOULD. It's sad.. but at lease WE were/are lucky enough to KNOW. NRBQ is another gem. Tons of records but no commercial recognition. Sometimes it's their choice.. Monica Naranjo.. a brilliant singer out of Spain became the artist she is today after leaving the "handlers" who demanded she do it THEIR way. Brilliant. Just wish they got the MONEY they should. You commented 14yrs ago. Are you still around these parts? LOL "the RANDY king, eh? haha
absoluter Hammer. Eine echte rarität diese Aufnahemn...ich bin begeistert. Corky Siegel and Jim Schwall are icons of my generation. Habe mir erst heute die CD von diesen Aufnahmen bei Amazon geloaded. Bin voll und ganz weg. Wer dabei still sitzt, ist tot ... ;)
Such great times at Harry' Hopes and all those Old Uptown shows , i was near the front listening watching Rollo . Going Home Chicago my brother in Harpland
I remember seeing this as Arthur Feidler's weekly Sunday Boston Pops Sunday Concert on KPBS in San Diego when we lived there. It was "Three Pieces For Blues Band and Orchestra" by Corky Seigal. The encore was "Hush Hush." I've been an ardent follower of the BEST Chicago Blues Band ever since
I actually got to see this show in the Opera House in San Francisco. It featured the SF Philharmonic conducted be Seji Ozawa. Mind blowing. It was in 1971 and this video may have been a rehearsal.
How are you doing? Don't know if you're going to remember but we were in Chicago at a concert probably around Early 70s and you were starting on stage Will Jim and Rolo Redford I think about it damn good night and i still believe in your Blues and your inspiration to me another Blues player thanks for that.. Daniel Wittenmyer Spirithorse..
Heard this broadcast live from the Ravinia Festival in 1968 and was mesmerized. Couple years later heard it in on KING-FM (classical station in Seattle, WA) on an album preview show as I was getting ready to leave for a Edgar Winter/J. Giels Show, oddly enough. (Ah, more harmonica!) I called the station and explained the background of the piece to the DJ as he was looking at the German translation of the liner notes (Deutschegramaphone recording) and was at a loss. So glad to see this here.
Heared it by circumstance on a german radio station in the mid of the 70s. And got it on CD a year ago. One of the most special things I ever listened to. Never heared a symphonic orchestra playing like extemporising in that way Many thanks for posting it!
Hi Corky. What a flashback! I will NEVER forget those days seeing you play at Juicy John Pinks in Dekalb/NIU. Hope you're doing well!-Eric (Globey) Globerson/San Diego for 28 years now!!! Come visit!
What history! And from his website I see Corky's been continuing to do this symphonic blues ever since the 60's. How about a clip of his latest commission & performance with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra?
@sassyclass1 hahahahaha! Love it. I'm afraid this is not "superimposed." You can get this piece via download on Deutsche Grammophon. Fiedler did an edited version so even if you can get the whole PBS filming it will still be an edited down version of the original Russo piece. Wooden Nickel? Wow! Memories! cork
Public Television was good enough to get permission for me to have the video and to use little clips of it for promotional use. So I want to honor their copyright by only presenting a small clip. This is the earliest video I know about of anything I have been involved in. cork
I've been trying for 25 years at least to get the entire tape of this event. No dice. Corky's the only guy I know who has it and he's not letting it go! Well, there's PBS, I'm sure it's in their vaults somewhere...Next time they hold their pledge drive, they should offer a nice, pristine Blu-ray copy of the gig for a pledge of 50 bucks or more. I'll bet it would drive up their pledge income!
+Mono Ped I meant the complete video. I've had the cd and multiple versions of the LP for years. I've been looking for a copy of the video for forty years!

What does PBS have to lose by releasing parts one and two and the entire part 3 for us to see on TH-cam? Are they a private for profit organization? What is their gain in holding this back?? It's not like the main-stream will be interested in this, so there are not large profit issues involved.
Yeah, it must have been superimposed when I watched this on television when it was first aired, too. Oh wait. They didn't have the technology to do that back in the day. Duh!

Loved Dex and ran into his daughter many many years later. He retired in Naples FL

This was my introduction to Corky. Was hooked from the start. Loved the fusion of classical and blues.
I remember seeing this as Arthur Feidler's weekly Sunday Boston Pops Sunday Concert on KPBS in San Diego when we lived there. It was "Three Pieces For Blues Band and Orchestra" by Corky Seigal. The encore was "Hush Hush." I've been an ardent follower of the BEST Chicago Blues Band ever since
Years ago at the Carousel Ballroom in San Francisco, Corky jumped off the stage harp in hand and I nearly fainted!! THEY are my FAVES!!!!!
I actually got to see this show in the Opera House in San Francisco. It featured the SF Philharmonic conducted be Seji Ozawa. Mind blowing. It was in 1971 and this video may have been a rehearsal.
Brilliant!!
Hope you're all doing well Jim and all the best to all.
This is great and I loved seeing you guys back in the 70's~Happy Birthday Corky! ;)
That was great show...thanks for posting.
remember hearing this on the radio, and thinking i was picking up two different stations!
It's too bad this cuts out before the piece is done, but it is so cool to see Corky as a young man.
