I use to be anorexic and was frequently in and out of treatment and hospitals (many times needing a NG tube like in the video) It wasn’t till I had a cardiac arrest and coded that I realized I didn’t really want to be a statistic and die from anorexia
I have now been in recovery for 6 years now; certainly not easy especially since I now have many health issues however every day living free from anorexia is far better than any second spent living in that prison

I've only seen a few TH-cam clips of the show but I really like him so far. How much is he present in the show? Trying to determine if it's worth getting into it just for him lol, I find several of the other characters pretty insufferable

I thought refeeding had to be done gradually or risk refeeding syndrome. Many Anorexic people cannot withstand it emotionally. That happened to Eugenia Cooney, who lost weight with a vengeance after treatment.
Actual refeeding is done gradually. From what I can tell by what little the video shows, this was an emergency situation that they needed to get her numbers (like blood sugar) back up.
Also, it's a tv show where they do take shortcuts, so to speak.
In residential treatment (places like Timberline Knolls where Demi Lovato stayed), the patients have to be relatively stable to go there. While there are a good number of doctors (MDs, PhDs and Psy-Ds) in such facilities, aren't hospitals.

It does. In very severe cases of anorexia, they'll initially increase your calories by as little as 15 a day because even when the patient CAN mentally/emotionally deal with recovery, if weight and calories have been very low for a very long time, the shock to the body of suddenly increasing calories by a lot can be fatal.
@@markalexander3659 That happened a lot during the last months of World War II when the Allies liberated concentration camps. The soldiers didn't know any different, so they gave the former prisoners candy bars and other high-calorie foods. Many died, until the doctors got there and told them how to help these people's bodies learn to accept food again to save them.
ACTUALLY.. Dr Charles gave her the treatment she deserved..ofc she didn't choose it, but you can't force her into treatment...in some states they can get a court order..Dr Choi didn't act professionally..he got emotionally involved..😢
dr choi always does that, he's very holier-than-thou and thinks he knows better than the patients and has the right to supercede the patient's wishes.

I'd be interested to know what the laws are regarding anorexia in Illinois. Anorexia is a difficult situation because it's not about suicide. If a person was trying to commit suicide by not eating, they would have the ability to force her. But because it's about control and the person isn't necessarily wanting to die, you can't force them. And in fact, there's been a lot of caselaw lately in the opposite direction where lawyers argue if it's right to force a person to live like that. Anorexia is an ugly disease and a lot of people who have it don't make it.
my aunt is a lot worse, she is about 58 and has been anorexic for over 40 years. she is a literal skeleton, its a miracle shes still alive

I get yah. My husband has been an anorexia nervosa survivor for almost 46 years. He’s always going to have issues with food, but he’s doing well now, and about to turn 47 years old. When I met him, he was just 42lbs in weight. It’s been a long road, but he’s 3 times that weight now 🙂

In high school over 30 years ago, I knew someone who said she had "anorexia" but not "anorexia nervosa." Apparently, that meant she had ZERO desire to eat, at all, she was completely absent of appetite, but it wasn't because of psychological reasons. She'd say her body was in an "anorexic state." She had a medical team working with her on it. I knew her through a job, not school, and don't remember her name, so I can't find out what happened with her.
My daughter and I have it. It's a pain. We can eat like normal then go days with nothing because we don't have an appetite and eating when you're like that just makes you feel sick. We have to supplement with high protein foods like eggs, peanut butter, and oatmeal.
@@_S.D._ I have ZERO hunger cues due to my adhd. Another major issue is that I get ZERO dopamine from eating. So nothing happens after I eat, I don’t FEEL anything, even if it’s something I like the taste of. I spend most days sipping on smoothies, and that works for me and keeping me healthy! I hope you two are able to keep going❤️ I know how idiotically difficult it is❤️

Had this issue with a recent surgery for relocating my gtube. Even though I had it before, the location was new and took a toll on my body. I could barely eat. Seeing the pump flow through that tube brought back fears that forever changed my life. I'm glad they covered this issue.

I've been struggling with anorexia for over a decade now. When this episode first came out, my dad wanted me to watch it because he thought it would "Scare" me into recovery. it honestly just reminded me of traumatic times in hospital stays myself and made me feel for her. I related to her and still do. And while i am not currently as physically underweight as allison, that doesn't make the battle less real or valid. Personally, getting sent back to the ER or a facility again is one of the scariest thoughts.
How are you now? Praying that ur doing well❤ and "scaring" someone into recovery is definitely not the way.

As a doc I agree that refeeding needs to be gentle and gradual. She needed to have been admitted and treated by a team that includes an internist, dietician and psychiatrst to get her on her way😊

@@jessicaarmstrong5035 Well, if she is found to be of soud mind one cannot force her to do something that she resfuses even if she know that this will kill her. She could sign against medical advice, or what is known as ''AMA.'' Of courae if ahe can figure a way to get home.
The medical team, including the psychiatrist, social worker, dietician, internist, chaplin, and legal advisers should put their heads together to try to help her with compassion and understanding. This is a very difficult condition to treat.
Just yesterday, I was grocercy shopping in the town square and met woman who looked like she came from Auchwitz. Her body was literally skin covering her skeleton. We have a mutual friend and she told me that she has end stage anorexia nervosa. The actress in Chicago med was fat in comparison. What I did notice is this woman doesn't seem happy at all. She seems in a bitter mood and the actress portrade this angry mood quite well. These people cannot enjoy their hunger.

I had anorexia years ago. Was in the hospital for 3 1/2 months. The Drs threatened to send me to the main hospital to get a feeding tube. They explained the whole process of restraining me to the bed with a catheter just to get me fed. It wasn't long after that i did try my best to eat and get better. I didn't need the tube and was able to work on recovery. I'm 44 years old had had dealt with an eating disorder off and on for about 30 years now. I have my struggles at times but I'm glad I'm able to recognize soon before it gets worse to pull myself out of it.
Loving the accuracy of some bits.
I gave pastoral care to a woman who was anorexic in her late 40s. She had so many health problem, a sister who was unbelievably caring and obese. She died. I had to do her funeral. The sisters family history told me so much.
I was 70 before I received the healing I really needed. Thankful.

I'm not a doctor but I'm pretty sure that pumping someone with 3000 calories after starvation would most likely cause refeeding syndrome which is very dangerous, as it can cause severe electrolyte imbalances which can even lead to death. Correct me if I'm wrong.
It’s true, they would have to monitor her often to make sure it was okay. Hopefully they would be doing it as slowly as possible.
Yes. Even someone in recovery from anorexia can get a heart attack and die. This happened to Karen Carpenter. Dr Charles is correct: eating disorders (particularly anorexia and bulimia) are the deadliest of mental illnesses.

As someone who seriously enjoys food to the point I've abused it and paying for it now with health issues, my heart goes out to those with eating disorders.
Eating disorders and disordered eating comes in all sorts of forms.
I spent eight years in and out of treatment and the medical adolescent unit to be force fed. Refeeding is a real issue, they have to monitor labs even more closely. I was constantly needing potassium and mag to correct things. I’ve been in recovery for 15 yrs and I mentor young girls struggling. I’m now dependent on a feeding tube and TPN because of the gastroparesis destroying my body. I was never allowed to negotiate my calories, they would drop an NJ tube, and there was no discussion.

Im not an anorexic but i have low self esteem except i gained weight lots of weight now im over 200lbs but in the passed 2 weeks i have changed and i am already losing weight. I feel bad for this girl.
I’m curious does anyone know how this works. Hospital skin force a patient to stay against their will if they attempt suicide because there a danger to themselves. So are they not allowed to do that with anorexics? They are also a danger to themselves? I just think it’s really interesting how that line works.
Hospitals can put suicidal and homicidal patients (those that express active ideation of harm) on involuntary holds because that is an immediate threat to the patient's/others safety and the hospital is liable if harm occurs because of their inaction. Hospitals cannot hold patients who refuse to follow a care plan, even if the refusal will inevitably lead to their death. For example, if you have a type 2 diabetic pt who says they're not going to take insulin/control their blood sugar, you can educate them and give them lots of resources, but you can't hold them or control what they're going to do once they leave, even if it's going to cause them harm/death. Tldr: immediacy of harm and pt autonomy
You cannot hold anyone indefinitely unless they're a ward of the state.
She was, while ill, still sane - and chose to die starving rather than live.
This is why when I was in eating disorder treatment for my bulimia/anorexia there were a lot of patients who had court orders and conservatorships placed on them. When that happens the patient's parents or other caretaker was the one making medical choices like this for them even if it was against their will.@@sarahburckle9441
IT's much like how you can treat an overdose when they arrive in the ER, but if the patient doesn't want to go to rehab, doesn't want counselling and tells you they're going to go out and score more drugs immediately on release, what are you going to do, lock them up indefinitely? It's the same. You can hold someone who is acutely ill to prevent them dying, but if they aren't interested in treatment, what is the point of holding them longer? Even leaving the law/constitutional rights aside, if you don't have a meaningful plan regarding how you would change their mind, you're just spending a lot of resources delaying what's going to happen anyway.

This is saying about any kind of psychological disoder, mental disorder mood disorder, etcetera. It is incredibly hurtful to watch your loved one not seem to want to get help but deep inside they're dying. It is almost impossible. But that is the way the fields of psychology and psychiatry are imperative.

Calm down, military boy, you can't push anorexic individuals to just magically start eating the way you want them to.
I abused laxatives and was anorexic and would purge for about 1 year lost about 60 pounds in 4 months. I herniated a disc in back and then got hooked back in pain killers and so I stopped starving myself and abusing laxatives. Now i am in a sub program for the last 4 years.
I genuinely hope you get better. Seriously, that sounds awful I can’t even begin to imagine

Oh I had those tubes for a whole year but I could only stand them for a day due to the psychological toll it took on me id pull the tube out. I got suicidal on them. I’d cheat too working the machine and emptying the “food” into anything I could get hold of. Pretty sad really. Needs to be done with psychological care too. That’s what people forget…..it’s a psychological condition. Yes we need feeding and electrolytes and potassium etc…..but the mind needs to be taken care off too.
If a hospital has the authority to use restraints and stop someone from injuring themselves or committing suicide, they should be allowed to use those restraints and sedatives so the person cannot rip out the feeding tube
Actually, only doctors can agree on the restraint only when the the order is written and signed.
I’ve been given sedatives that I didn’t agree with and in my field of work I’ve watched many people be restrained without any permission. It happens.
Any Eating Disorder is extremely difficult to treat successfully…so many levels of pain and emotion are associated 😢
My dad said this MULTIPLE times:
“You can die from being to fat AND you can die from being too skinny”
My doctor says it’s safer to be 20% overweight, than to be 10% underweight.

unfortunately that happens to a lot of anorexia patients they keep dropping weight until eventually their bodies can't take it anymore and they go into multiple system failure

@@snowyowl2784Well, a lot of people, me included, are watching these clips for the first time, and will go to the channel to watch the shows. So it's not a time thing. I've noticed in a lot of these videos, for Law and Order, House MD, New Amsterdam, etc., when someone posts what happens, they'll say type "Spoiler" and then space down, and THEN type what happens. Because as much as we try to avoid the comments, our eyes do get drawn to them. So it's just a nice way to accommodate the OP and those who don't want to see the ending. Cool name, by the way. Makes me think of Hedwig.
Shouldn’t they have primed the enteral nutrition through the pump first? That much air in the tube at the very start would probably result in the patient having gas pains or bloating, right? Granted not too much, but still…
I can't give you a clinical answer, but for the purposes of TV drama, at least, this was much more effective. That tension building as the calories approached...

I really hope that any reasonable judge would see that this woman is too mentally ill to make medical decisions for herself and would give the parents temporary guardianship over her to get her better...I feel to bad for people that are going through this.
Getting guardianship of an adult is a massive undertaking and conservatorship is easily abused once in place, so it's difficult to get. If her parents got conservatorship over her, they are legally responsible for everything she owns and everything she does. So let's say she decides to bite Dr. Charles. Her parents would be legally responsible, the way they would if she were a child and bit him. They're now in charge of her finances, her property, everything. A better option would be to sue for medical power of attorney and mandatory treatment.

First of all, giving somebody who is habitually starving themselves for decades such a huge amount of calories can send them into shock. Secondly, how exactly is treating a person who is obsessed with control like an exhibit at the zoo going to help them? A feeding tube is pure torture, if they actually agree to it (more likely bullied into it), could it at least be done in the privacy of some drawn curtains without a pair of anxious parents and a psychiatrist and anyone walking by looking on?

Just removed my whole story because it's a whiny story, but I can vouch for her story. This show captured it pretty well. My BMI wasnt as low, but I looked and actef the same for the same biological reasons. But I didn't do it on purpose (she can physically eat, I couldn't,which I caused by the same reasons). Sometimes they make you have a tube to eat (I wasn't made to;I had a false choice).
The only issues I have are
1. She absolutely could not have used her phone in that state. She could get up, but she knew she couldn't *stay* up. She's done this before, and she knew that her sense of balance and stimulation would make her fall back onto the bed, or into the ground. Her phone is the same. The lowest brightness is too bright in that state. I didn't see the end; perhaps she couldn't call after all.
2. That's actress' BMI is not 11. It's because it's unethical to hire an actress with a bodyweight that low. At that weight, you can drop dead unexpectedly even when hooked up to all the telemetry she has. I don't agree with claiming a BMI 11 even though you can't control that. Malnutrition isn't a weight problem, it just happens that BMI 11 is always malnutrition. Malnutrition at a higher BMI can be just as bad, and to use that number for shock value is irresponsible. Mine was 17 but because of other factors, my malnutrition had me get a legal treatment order because I tried to escape when I felt better. At the worst, I can't even imagine what they would have done. Not trying to get asspats and I know I said I deleted my story, but utnwas necessary to provide evidence for my issues with this.

At the start of the episode Dr Choi says that Allison is 27, then Dr Charles deduces that shes been anorexic for 15 years meaning she was only 12 when she developed her anorexia! Your brain takes 25 years to fully develop so it's no wonder she was so committed to her anorexic lifestyle. It's had over 13 years to get ingrained onto her brain.
I was in pain for awhile now when I got sick and sickening and sickness can be painful to avoid eating and drinking and sleeping and I just wanted to give myself meds medicine medications to take less risk for pain for my pregnancy to get more results from a doctor choi doctor manning a good thing to have me protected
You know when I overeat and need to lose weight, my parents didn’t make it all about how a bad diet would make me look. They focused on teaching me about how overeating could lead to diabetes, heart problems, high cholesterol, and other hazardous body dysfunctions. They made it all about my health. Not my looks and maybe that’s why I was never Anorexic or Bulimic. Because my parents had me thinking about my health.
I think maybe that’s a more positive way to get your kids to eat better. Don’t try to get your kids to diet by telling them if they don’t eat right they’ll get ugly and don’t criticize them either. Kindly, lovingly, but firmly, explain to them the importance of eating right for the good of their health. If someone only thinks about if they’re healthy instead of how skinny they can look, they won’t over eat or starve themselves. Because neither one is healthy and they’ll want to do what is healthy.

Karen Carpenter died because of the damage she caused to her heart from being anorexic. Its so sad there are people who think they have to starve themselves to be pretty. 😢
She was so talented. The irony is that anorexia makes you the opposite of pretty but they are too mentally disturbed to see it.
It’s not at all related to being pretty. Sure societal expectations increases the chances. Eating disorders have been linked to control and often a symptom of trauma.
@@d_a9404societal expectations and trauma do have a part in this, but it is also related to being pretty. People with anorexia see being as thin as possible as pretty, and that’s what they strive for. There are also other body image issues likely related, people with anorexia often think everything about them is “ugly”.
It's not that - eating disorders are a coping strategy for life (albeit unhealthy). It truly is a mental illness...

I am only 14 and my best friend is going through this and has totally disconnected from me and my other best friend it is just so up setting to see what it can come to long term
I'm not sure if I have an eating disorder but most days I have more fluids than solids and there are days where I don't eat anything at all.

I often wonder what it's like to be anorexic. I have been overweight my entire life and have only attempted being anorexic one time. It was a terrible feeling, I didn't like who I saw in the mirror. I rather be eating what I want and be happy, than not eating at all and hate myself✊
It can be a terrible thing to experience, especially if you have had a recent surgery or trauma that prevents you from feeling content when you eat, eather physical or emotional.
I don't think you're understanding what anorexia is. Anorexics see a fat person in the mirror even though in real life they are morbidly underweight. They're trying to lose weight because according to them they are overweight. It's not a matter of whether they're hungry or not. It's a mental disorder. Happy to them is seeing somebody who has a thin stature, which they are incapable of seeing.

I have anorexia, not anorexia nervosa which is what most people think of.
For starters, there is no appetite, no matter how long you go without food you still don't feel the need. Eating is....not eating, it's just putting objects through your throat, because nothing registers as being food, there is utterly zero difference between me trying to eat a plastic ruler and a chocolate bar. I don't suffer a bad self image though, this isn't a psychological disorder, I was simply born being unable to enjoy a daily part of life.
It's not a condition I'd wish on anyone, but at the very least we will never be tempted to binge eat.
@@theeguy9022 that's the strangest thing I've ever heard. Eating is not eating, the body needs food to survive. All I can say is, a lot of people, men and women, have lost their battles with anorexia, they died. The best thing you can do for yourself is see a nutritionist, since it's not a psychological disorder, and a nutritionist will tell you what to eat... however, I literally have no idea how you will ever be able to see eating as eating
I’m anorexia it’s hard
I recall when I returned from Japan studying karate my idiot friends kept accusing me of anorexia. I told them they had no idea what they were talking about. I had a good self image, worked out 25-60 hours a week and ate a ton of food to fuel that exercise level. I recall eating my 3rd order of lasagna while orhers suggested i was anorexic. i pointed out that i was out eating them times 3. i said one might suggest bolemia if they thought i was purging (i wasnt) but that suggesting anorexia was ridiculous. I was insanely healthy in world class athletic condition. A outdoors person hiking an camping in winter can starve to death eating twice the calories a sedentary indoor person can get fat eating.

You work out 25-60 hours A WEEK? That's... a LOT, unless you're a professional athlete (especially when you consider the average FULL-TIME JOB is at least 30 hours a week.) I mean, if you ARE a professional/competing athlete and you love it, great, but if you're exercising that much because you feel you HAVE to, to stay the size you are... well, it's not an eating disorder, but it sounds like a different kind of problem that still needs addressing...

If you don’t “waste time” with these patients, many people who do not need to die will die. Anorexia is as much of a physical illness as it is a mental one, and you have to work with the mental side in order to help these patients. It’s a SYMPTOM of anorexia to not want to accept help, but once you get through that barrier, people who otherwise would’ve died would live. If you think so many lives are a “waste of time” then I do not think you are a good person.

@@jameslahey2005 it also sets precedent to other people with the same disorder needing help. well, if this patient with the same disorder as me was left to die of the disorder even when they tried to get help then whats stopping them from doing that to me? more people would stop trying to get help knowing they'd be left to die and struggle even if they tried to get the help they need
As a doctor if someone I am saving their life tryna sue me cause that reason, I would just let them go on their own decision. I aint let nobody sue me for doing my job and save ones life.
You know it can also be neglience letting someone go if you know they're gonna hurt themselves or die. So you could be sued with that too. Just do your job within the laws.

Random aside here. I've always thought "Smith" sounds like a first name. Like "Hi, I'm Smith Johnson!" And then I read a book where the character's father actually had it as a first name! @@d_a9404 I'm highly educated, it has nothing to do with kindness, when a person CHOOSES self destructive behaviors like starving themselves they are seeking out attention because they feel sorry for themselves because life hasn't been fair to them, 99% of all anorexia cases start out because the person was ridiculed about their weight, they then CHOOSE to starve themselves so they look pretty but no one forces them to do it

All I’m saying is choose kindness because regardless of why someone has an eating disorder, (according to you it’s a choice) it doesn’t mean they deserve our help and compassion. Eating disorders are highly linked to traumatic experience and often people have co-morbid disorders. Such as living with Borderline which is a self destructive disorder that can coexist with eating disorders. In this scenario, it’s not a choice. It’s a dysfunction. No I don’t have the percentage, but I am a PhD student in clinical psychology. Have a good day!

Oftentimes accompanied by a delusion (a fixed belief that cannot be swayed by any sensory input or evidence) which by definition, Is a mental illness or a symptom of a metal illness.
