- Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

Jess... I've been following you since sweet little Ben was 3. I loved seeing him try to beat you to the garden so he could get the first bite of tomato & his little eyes rolled back in his head & then he handed you one. When you said that you were taking those tomatoes in to Ben, I thought I miss the good old days. OMG he got that same smile on his face & that same appreciation on his face when he got that first taste. I got a glimpse of baby Ben once again. THANK YOU!!! That was my blessing for today. Great job Momma!!! 😊
Think I've been following since around then too..Jess is such an inspiration to so many of us ❤
Me, too! I love that even with sports he still enjoys the garden. Makes my heart smile.
Same here! I love his joy!
Female guineas make a “her-her” sound and the males make a loud single yell with a vibrato 😂
That's what I was gonna say, just listen for their call.🧡🧡
I always joke that my hens are calling, "Say what?!" and the males are saying "I dunno what, but it wasn't me, and you can't blame it on me, so don't say it was me!"
@@auntlouise shaggy 😂 it wasn’t me
I never could figure it out either but I also had a hen hatch out keets such cute babies
Thank you for sharing
your light
your smile
your farm
your heart
and your family with us.
I would be one of those to cry if we were ever to meet.
You touch my heart like no words can explain.
Thank you for blessing me each and every time
Thank you for being you. 🙏❤️
Well I’ll say Guinea math is more difficult than chicken math 😂.. start with 6, down to “one” and now you have 13 ❤
They’re the word problems. “If you have 8 guineas and 6 die but you only see one, how many do you have?….13” 😂
@@caraoiler711 😆😆 much better said than me 😆😂♥️
Lol thats so hilarious
It’s just like real life math….makes no sense 😂😂 but Guinea math is louder for sure.

WOW! Jess and Charles meet? That's gonna be special. 🌱
Your cottage garden blows my mind, remembering the raw land you started with. Seeing you shepard the land is what moves me.
I love Ben's expression every start of tomato season. Best tradition ever!
Your farm is a little bit of heaven, cranked up to eleven!!❤
I’m thinking this needs to be the next sticker slogan…😍

It's words in a song that reminds me of Jess,& Miah.
I can't help but say it about their farm! It is beautiful.
Artist, Cliff & Susan
Song, Better than a country song.
CD title, Fiddle & Keys
I'm imagining a dinner party on your farm where everyone has a small plate with some veggie dip and their wandering through your garden snacking to their heart's delight.
The look on Ben's face when he saw the tomatoes...❤️
I'm pretty sure I cried and called you Miss Sowards the first time I met you! 🤣Then it finally sunk in..."my friends call me Jess and I hope you will too." 🙂
Awwe.. A best way to continue my day as I'm finishing my time in God's Word and asking Holy Spirit, What will You have of me today?
Love you Jess.. Enjoy your day and beautiful farm with your family. ❤
I would be in total awe walking through your garden property just as it is now!!!
I used to walk past a small garden a little elderly gentleman tended in his yard...I would stop and admire the glory of it over his fence. Didn't get to actually meet him until just a couple years ago and I had a delightful conversation with him. I told him "give me some advice! Do you have any secrets to share???" He laughed and said he just stuck stuff in the ground and if it grew, it grew lol
He has since passed away but I still hope that. as I age and develop my gardening skills that I have the honor of meeting people that admire my little patch even half as much as I did his.
Isn't that the way it always is? You anxiously wait to get started. Everything seems to be taking it's sweet time coming along. You get nervous and wonder what you've done wrong and then Bam! Everything is lush and fabulous. I love it!😊
The smile on Ben's face seeing the tomatoes was so sweet!
My mom and i feel the same about our garden. It fills us with joy to see things doing well and productive and we wish we could share that joy with ours (plus we're just so proud of the way it looks). I have to go into my garden every day..... it's so satisfying to see all the hard work coming into fruition. It's a true blessing from God that's for sure and this feeling brings me closer to God as well. No greater occupation than being a homesteader!
So glad to see you back!!! Aweee, your new babies are precious. There's nothing better than babies on the farm!
Hello Jess and family and fellow TH-cam viewers, I just want to say God is great! Father's Day evening we had an what we believe was a tornado hit our home, we are sure it will need to be rebuilt. But what is great is my husband and I and ALL our animals were safe. Thank you again Lord. Thank you for sharing it made my day. With the stressful last 3 days we have had. Till next time God Bless.
oh sweet Jess, you do share that feeling of visiting a garden full of life, on a golden summer evening, because you have inspired and encouraged us all through growing our own
To find the words to share the feeling of longshadow ( Golden Hour) amongst the growing things... to describe the smell of gentle rest amongst the plants, the hush of colour, the sigh of leaves as the air expands in the coolness... to hear the dust as it rises seeking the first star of the evening...for one's senses muddling in the glory of the garden's relief .... i too wish i could catch a hand, a swish of skirt and exclaim ' do you feel this, too?'
❤️
I LOVE this!!! I hope you don't mind if I copy it?
You're most welcome to.
it truly is so difficult shrinking down into common words the feeling of being in a miracle ❤️
Jess I felt this in my garden this early morning as I watered. Thanking God for the chance to grow my garden and chickens.
Eggplant Recipe: Cut them into fries, dip in your sourdough discard (no egg or anything, just discard) and fry. Discard makes the most perfect tempura. Dip in a creamy horseradish sauce (homemade mayo & horseradish).
Okay this recipe may be worth planting eggplant for me lol
@@brittanykeith9561 It is! I grow Patio baby. They are a small quick producing eggplant that is prolific and great for this recipe.
Your garden has always been so beautiful! Thank you for sharing Jess. God bless you and your family.❤️✝️🙏
I swear I get a full meal every time I garden. I snack all the time! Love your videos
Wow! The garden looks spectacular! Welcome back home Jess! 💚💚💚
I love the wildness of the garden 🩷
I had a Tromboncino Squash that was a bit stunted because I planted it into a new garden bed and the compost wasn't as broken down as I would have wished. I left on vacation for 4 days, came back and it had grown 2-3 feet. My mind was blown. Another Tromboncino growing about 4 feet away from it on the same trellis is still stunted and was close to the same size the other plant had been when we left. I'm not crazy! That thing grew LIKE CRAZY!!!! I totally believe that, if you worked in your garden in the morning then came back out in the evening, the squash plants have probably grown several inches in that time. It's so neat and fun!
Just beautiful 😍
You could make some ratatouille with the eggplant
Looks really pretty when you use eggplant, yellow summer squash and zucchini
Garden GLORY!!!!!
The guinea fowl keets reminds me of my childhood at the family farm. Great job mama Guinea! I see Mr. Dad is very protective.
Ahhhh Charles Dowding!!!! I’m so excited for you. He’s so inspiring just like you. I’ve watched you both for years but you got me into gardening and gave me such great knowledge and a sense of giving in to the garden when things don’t go right. ❤❤❤
Oh yeah I’d be crying meeting Charles Dowlding. What the heck. So so cool ☀️☀️☀️
Your home is beautiful...and so are you.
Thank you so much
Good morning! Thanks for starting my day in my favorite way (after spending time with God, that is).
I harvested the first broccoli I've ever grown today. The heads are so big and it tastes so good.
Jess I spent so many years growing up hating having to work in the garden but I find as I'm getting older, 49, that I love it and have so much excitement seeing all the things growing.
Such gorgeous gardens, sweet baby keats following momma & your sweet family being content having you back home! Thanks & blessings to all🤗🇨🇦
Garden is stunning! Well done Ma'am!
I enjoyed your video with your awesome Mom. ❤
Aww meeting Charles Dowding!! What a wonderful opportunity. It would be amazing to visit Wales and see all of their amazing gardens and landscapes. That’s awesome that he’s visiting the states 🤍
Love that we feel the same about the garden. It is amazing to walk through and tear up at the amazement of things growing. Its magical indeed!
😍🤩 Suffering from garden envy right now! I have one volunteer tomato plant in a random barrel in my backyard that has a few ripening tomatoes on it. And some herbs in my greenstalk! 🤗 One day! One day!!!
Delmar has gotten so big. I love your garden, Jess. Your videos make my heart happy. I wish I had your growing thumb and some of your space. I bless you all the days of your life.
Welcome home, Jess. 😊
Your garden just makes my heart happy! 😍
When I spent a month in Cypress many years ago, I often went 'out to eat' with friends. Going 'out to eat' means that you are going to another family's home where they will cook for you, as often as 'going out to eat' meant going to a restaurant. I loved that experience! At one of the dinners we had at a family's home we had extremely delicious moussaka made in individual pottery 'bowls', that looked a lot like slightly larger coffee cups with no handles. The thick juicy slices of eggplant (which of course they called georgette), just fit in those cups with a bit of room to spare for the cheesy sauce to ooze around! You could easily do something similar in perhaps individual soup bowl with a layer of smaller, thick eggplant slices! Then be in your wonderful garden while they cook, and afterwards as the tomato-salad-plates and moussaka bowls do their thing in the dishwasher!!!! Let me know if you try it! I've done it several times and really enjoyed it! Mine taste almost as good as the dish I had in Cypress! ( I'm sure the memory helps elevate the taste of those!)
Hi Ms. Jessica, it wasn't for very long but just for a moment, when you scanned the garden, I felt like I was back in Arkansas. Glad your daughter is home. Those guineas were really cuties. God bless you guys.
I love the buttery texture and taste of Fairytale eggplant but I remember the skin being tough. I don’t have a grill but I will roast whatever veggies in the oven at 425F until tender… yellow squash, zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, bell pepper, onion, garlic mixed with olive oil, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper. Grate Parmesan cheese on top when it comes out of the oven. Yum!
Awww, I love your VOLUNTEER Guineas 😍.. Good luck, little fellas. I think you will do great!!!..
I'm excited too!! They are cute and yes to those survivor genes. We all have them, sometimes it just takes more life to figure that out.
Lil Eggplant: Slice, bread and deep fry. It's an EVENT when I harvest my first eggplant!
I cannot believe the cottage gardens growth!
Jess, you have been able to manifest your dreams so far at a very young age. There is no doubt you will one day have an open, public walking garden! Katie's new 'do' makes her look a bit like a distant cousin of Yoda! ❣
Love Simple & Easy Healthy Cooking with home grown veggies and goodness!
Eggplant. I LOVE them cooked in a good rich tomato sauce and served over pasta with parm. My mother used to baked eggplant with stewed tomatoes, onion, and cheese. A descontructed, non-fried eggplant parmesan. SO good.
Oh Jess the gardens are lovely, productive a perfect gift 🎁 thank you 😊.
Love seeing those tiny babies
Thank you for that tomato tip!!!! I have always thought it was best to pick EvErYtHiNg first thing in the morning! Can't wait to put this tip into practice❤
Your plants stretched to the heavens wondering where you went...... Glad your home safe and sound❤
Aw man, I even teared up a little when you said you get to meet Charles. So Jelly!!!!!😅 Talk about a bucket list moment. How exciting.
I love your garden and seeing your excitement out there. I feel the same way about mine. My husband is so accommodating as I show him excitedly something new I've found in the garden. I have to work full time away from my home, so it is a treat when I don't have to leave the property the entire weekend.
You get to meet Charles Dowding! He is my hero in gardening.
Eggplant. Cubed and sautéed with salt and pepper. I top my creamy southern grits, scrambled eggs, and then the sautéed eggplant.
Good Morning❤ best way to start my day is to watch one of your vlogs with a cup of tea.
That's so awesome you get to meet Charles dowding! I like to describe him as the bob ross of gardening ❤😊
Thank you for sharing your garden with us, it's so lovely, ❤
Wow! Delmer is so big and beautiful! 🤩 Loved the mini garden tour too. In South Africa our Hibiscus used to get enormous, taller than an adult (I was a kid back then). Such beautiful flowers.
Delmer is so BIG! Crazy it seems he was just a calf. Your garden has just shot off, everything is so lush! I am really excited to see your hibiscus bloom. It is loaded, it’s going to be so beautiful 😍
OH JESS my greatest gardening GURU -CHARLES DOWDING I cannot believe it please ask him to come to Australia for all of us down under. 🥰🥰
Whoa! Charles Dowding?! Swoon! He is absolutely amazing! I don’t blame you! 💚
Thanks for sharing.
Watching you is the highlight of my day!
Please just remember to rest! I don't want you to have issues ❤
Garden looks good Jess. It’s awesome that you will meet Charles Dowding. That would be a moment to treasure for sure. He is a wealth of knowledge. Love seeing the animals.❤❤
Hi my sweet friend always enjoy coming over and seeing your beautiful garden as always everything is perfectly in it. Everything is beautiful looking.
Thanks Jess, I’m glad you went against your initial plan and gave us a mini tour anyway.😊I had to go out and enjoy my evening garden afterwards too. I love when my garden grows by leaps and bounds when I’m not looking. I’m not a patient gardener so it feels like a bit of instant gratification, if that makes sense. We’ll gladly watch a garden tour whether it’s full on or a mini. It’s that time of year when it’s changing by the day. The beautiful cottage garden is so full and lush. It’s trying to go rogue.😂
Ben has grown so much since the move to the big farm but he’s still that little “farm boy” that experiences the sheer joy of the taste of the season’s first tomato.😋🍅
I grew up in a big family and if you didn’t eat fruit slightly green you didn’t get to harvest any. I had that taste today as I ate a partially green strawberry. So it’s hard for me to walk past the strawberries 🍓 in the GS’s until they are truly ripe. But it’s so satisfying when I do.😋
You’ve got a good man there grilling’ dinner. Get some rest.
As always, from CA🏖️take care.
Charles Dowding! I'm crying FOR you!!
We will be at MacMurray fest! So excited! Saw you speak at Rory Feeks 2 years ago. I'm hoping i can meet you in Iowa... either way, so glad you are here!
That is a worth dreaming about and I pray one day it happens ❤
Colloidal silver will take care of that sty in no time flat! And you are darn lucky to have found a man that will cook (among many other things)!
When our son got his drivers license he came in one day and announced "I saw the biggest chicken I've ever seen running across the road"!!! I knew there was guineas in that area and it cracked me up! :)
So good to see you again! Have a great time meeting Charles D.!
Thankful you had a wonderful filled journey and that it was also a safe trip. 🎉
This is the first year I've tried growing eggplant. I spotted the LAST starter plant on sale in a sea of strawberry and tomato starts (which were hard not to pick up) and you'd been talking about eggplant lately so I HAD to have it. 😅 Wish me luck. ❤ Entirely your fault. Yay new adventures in gardening. 🎉
Oh I love Melissa’s channel!
We like to use eggplant as a hidden veggie in a lot of dishes, but I can't wait to make Baba Ganushe (I know I am spelling that wrong, sorry!)
Charles Dowding!! Yeeeeeessss!!
Stuffed eggplant - sliced thin and rolled grape leaves style. The fill can be whatever you like, top with either oil salt and pepper, or tomato sauce….possibilities are endless.
Awesomeness ❤
Jess, I really like your hairstyle! Thanks for the walk through the garden❤
Try your egg plant fried. Lots of recipes on the internet. Egg, cornstarch, panko or corn meal. spice. Many variations. That’s how my mom made it… love it with some hot sauce/Tabasco.
Beautiful garden and all that food. How exciting for your next trip. God bless from Western Australia 🇦🇺
Seychelles beans are wonderful! Hope they work well for you. I have grown them for a few years now in Nova Scotia, Canada
I learned that ground cherries are perennial, which explains why they pop up in the same places on our property every year!
Jess rub Bens eye with a GOLD WEDDING BAND 🥰🥰
Charles Dowding was my gateway drug to gardening youtube shows! I wished that he was local, searched youtube and found YOU! We were both in Arkansas at the time!
God is good. He blesses you so much. I’m so glad 🙂
Thank you for sharing the trip it was especially inspiring
I planted Paul Robeson and Mr. Stripey for the first time this year. My Giant Crimson are doing awesome this year!
I love your dream!
Missed you while you were away. Glad you made it safe and sound. Was praying for safe travels.❤
I'm behind, but....The fairy tale eggplant is great cooked with tomatoes and onions, in a stir fry, sauteed with garlic, onions, and herbs (especially basil). It's one of my favorites. Yummy.
"The Tomatoe are ready, Ben"!
"Del mer"! 🤣.
Im glad your trip was a success and Maleah is home with ya'll 💗.
JO JO IN VT 💞
Ugh! I need to see more ❤
Boil up a tea bag and once its cool enough place it on Bens stye. I used to get them often as a child and my mom would put the hot tea bag on a few times a day and it would clear up faster than the ointment from the doctor ❤
