Hello Peter, I'll tell you and your viewers a trick to stopping the MDF breaking off when you machine the final finishing layer. Make some 2 part epoxy, and use suitable thinners to make it runny like paint. Paint this thinned epoxy over your roughed out surface (before finishing is started). Let it soak in and harden. Because it is thin, it will soak into the MDF past the 1mm finishing layer, and when hard, bonds it better than the MDF glue. When you do your finishing pass, your finished surface is hard, and bits wont break off! Cheers, Tony, from Atomik Laser in Wellington. Enjoying all your vids!
Peter, I'll bet with Vetric's new laser module, in 10.5, one could laser etch an overlay of an actual map, on top of the scaled topagraphical cut. Thanks for all you do and for your inspiration.
No problem. I hope it comes out good for you. Better get it while it is working and I suggest you get a screenprint of the area you selected because when you are looking at it later you will be scratching your head trying to figure out the landmarks. Cheers Peter
Really enjoyed this topic and implementation of same. Who knew that height maps weren't tiled?! In fact I bet they have gone to quite some pains to stitch the scanned data together to make them seamless. I have heard that there is elevation data (ASL) embedded into Google Maps along with GPS or rather LAT / LON coordinates. Well, haven't you opened a huge can of worms :-) Best, Chris
Now you got me thinking of doing my state Florida USA as a wall hanging. I made an Aztec Calendar out of MDF and the detail was fantastic. Great information and video. Enjoyed watching.
If you used a 1/4" ball nose EM for roughing instead of a 1/4" EM you wouldn't get the pieces breaking off. You can also use rigid foam, say 2", normally used for housing that you can get from your big box store. It isn't as good as say 15-20 pound HDU but its readily available and very low cost, plus it machines well if you ignore the mess. If you're going to paint it with an epoxy primer it will work reasonably well and it's great for practice cuts.
Thanks for the heads up on the ball node for rough cut qwerty. I did check to see if I could get rigid foam but I can't buy it around here and the large retail outlets here don't stock it. They can only offer polystyrene which will be a trying to get rid of years from now. cheers Peter
Hey buddy, videos are great.Just thought i would add my two cents worth.Unfortunately terrain.party is very buggy currently and virtually impossible to download anything at all.Even if you do manage to get it too download it ends up being a 1kb text file letting you know that you havent got anything from the site!( I had a laugh at that) After a lot a searching I found a better site that has a lot of options as well as options for cnc operators(just a few).Unfortunately it only has 30m resolution for NZ but it is still fine if you dont want super high resolution in your finished model.Keep up the great work with these super easy vids to follow.Cheers from the deep south.
Hallo Peter! Can you pls try right now once more for testing: Helsinki (bottom of default map), zoom 30. I get only readme telling there is no map. Using win 10. Thx! It would be great project for my grandsons.
Great video as always. But unfortunately I cannot download the map from the website. Only a .txt file where they say "No height map data was available. That's a bummer. If you're way at the poles, that's probably why. Orbital measurements only go so far away from the equator. If this area is filled with water, try a box that has less water. That's probably a good idea for gameplay reasons anyway. Otherwise, this could be a problem with terrain.party. Retrying the link above at a later time might help, or try posting it in the Discuss link for help. At any rate: there's no height maps here. Sorry!" I'm looking for a Central Italy zone, so no water at all but a lot of mountains. I tried in several location, but the message is always the same. Do you know another website where I can find the same info? Thank you
@@cncnutz I read in several forums that it is a typical issue of terrain.party. Usually, it disappears after some days. I found this one tangrams.github.io/heightmapper/ it is not userfriendly as the other but it can be used as well.
Go online to TOPOTOPO and find the grayscale of the world down to very small areas, Or download QGIS and pull down contour maps of your Country and join them together etc in Qgis, When you have got your contour output Use Gimp or Inkscape and start at white on the highest contour and go down through the contours to Black, occasionally you will find lines aren't joined and so more than one contour will be filled. Also make sure you use extremely fine line widths so that contours don't block up. Tutorial over, both of these methods will cut with free software such as Scorchworks software (search TH-cam)
Thanks Chuck, I checked out TopoTopo but it was nowhere near as good as Terain.party. The TopoTopo file was lower quality and had holes in it where the Terain.party one is ready to go. The good news is the website is now working again. Cheers Peter
Looks great. Am I correct that you can't do greyscale in vcarve??? I have done something similar downloading a STL from this site ( touchterrain.geol.iastate.edu/ ), but I have to say that you are getting a sharper image the way you are doing it.
I believe you are correct Rob. I know they just added PhotoVCarve function to VCarve Pro but according to the Vectric Website they didn't include the lithophane function which would have allowed Grayscale machining.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but everywhere I try it says there is no height maps data available, even tried the area shown in the video. I wonder if it's an issue of me being in USA.
I just tested it and I am getting the same results as you. I now get only a text message in my zip file saying there are no height maps available for the area. There must be an issue with the website because I've been using it for a week now with no problem. Typical

That site doesn't work for me. It crashes on the server side. :/
Have you considered using HDU for these, it machines like butter, bit expensive though.
Not at the cost of the stuff Les. MDF will just do me fine.

How many hours of machining did the whole project take,
Can't remember but I think it was about 4 hours.

Hi Andrzej
I'm going try this with Ireland. Gas anyone attempted it with a bit of hardwood? And a taper endmill?
I aquired some offcuts of HDU from a sign making site, would you like me to send you a piece or two.
Thanks Less but I will pass on your offer at this time. Really appreciate it though.
Cheers

Thats the proof - the earth is Flat
Your right. I must get my scientific papers published immediately. I can already taste that Nobel prize.
anyone else see a cat at 8:09?
I was wondering what you were talking about because the cat was earlier on in the video, and then I spotted it.
