    I was off put by the controversy around this game based on one person's reaction to this while being totally fine with the activities of, you know, the vikings. The whole thing seemed disingenuous to me. That said the game looks really fun and I will be picking it up. I appreciate your integrity.

      It’s a decent expansion that adds another dimension to the core game. It’s just a shame that it’s been overshadowed by controversy.
      There was a decent disclaimer on the event cards and I was able to place the game in its historical context without needing further guidance on the issue.
      With reference to Vikings, my ancestors in the North of England were subject to barbarism from that group. I’m not sure if I’m qualified to ask a designer to alter their game because of it though. Maybe I just won’t play it if it upsets me. I wasn’t offended by Blood Rage or Raiders of the North Sea.

      @@chrismichael9556 Well, public image anyway (or the bottom line). It is just fascinating what is considered inappropriate compared to something comparable that is totally okay in the eyes of the idealists. It seems people just like throwing their weight around to feel like they are somehow making a difference. But I'm cynical like that.

      @@danielmarlett1421 isn't that the point of the controversy, to discuss what's people would like to see in board games? I personally am not offended by pizzaro and cortes but other people are. If I made a nazi simulation board game then I'm sure you'd be understanding of why public reaction would be negative.

    • @danielmarlett1421

      @@ArtaxForever Fair point. It is their right to complain. But the nature of their complaints in contrast to one of their favorite games involving vikings and pillaging does strike me as tone deaf. I think we can all agree that Viticulture World is not a Nazi simulator.

    It is interesting that Mafia cards from the original viticulture didn't cause the same level of controversy despite the known effect of the mafia on the people of Italy.

    I missed all of the controversy over this game but it seems like another storm in a teacup to me. I’m really not happy that segments of the board gaming community have gone so woke. Some channels are unwatchable for me now. Thankfully, BG Bollocks are the antithesis to this. I really appreciate the honesty of this channel. Cheers.

    I have Viticuture Essentials and Tuscany Expansion but I have been asleep at the wheel when it comes to World. That said, anything engaging Twatter's and FBs perpectually offended bell-ends just bores the pants off me. I have a somewhat aging game called Emira. It's not great, but it's not bad either. In came the virtue signaling crowd and cry bullies to suggest that the game's theme directly advocated for the harem system and female enslavement to the exclusion of any real discussion as to the actual merits or otherwise of the game. That's akin to implying that anyone who enjoys consuming alcohol endorses alcoholism.

    • @ArtaxForever
      @ArtaxForever 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you genuinely liked it then why would you feel bad for owning it? Nobody's telling you you're a bad person for owning that game. Do you feel personally attacked because people are criticizing a game you own?

    • @jackburtonstwin
      @jackburtonstwin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ArtaxForever I think you have miss-interpretted my comment here. I have never been criticised for owning any game (well, other than the real turkeys that creep into everyone's collection). My point is that people can find reasons to question the inclusion of one or more elements of a game as inappropriate. I don't dismiss their distress or concerns, but I am not required to wallow in them either, anymore than others should be required to accommodate my sensitivities. If a game crosses a thematic, moral or ethical line for me I can just choose from the thousands of others that are available every year. These are board games and a hobby, we should not imbue them with greater significance than they actually merit.

    • @ArtaxForever
      @ArtaxForever 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jackburtonstwin I totally agree, you're not required to question/not purchase whether this game is problematic, but the people who are questioning it have the same right to do so. It was stonemaiers choice to amend the cards, I don't personally have a strong opinion whether that was good or not, but I do feel it was a good thing for people to speak up about their criticisms.

    Just to clarify what the "demands" are that Matt mentions in this video, here's what we requested of early reviewers to whom we sent Viticulture World:
    "Important for Viticulture World: Please do not play with the South America continent until you receive the replacement cards (see this article for context), which will be sent separately later in May. Alternatively, you can download and print the replacement cards here. There’s still plenty of content in the expansion for you to explore, and you’re welcome to play as much or as little of it before featuring it on your platform."
    It's well within any reviewer's rights to play any game we send to them as they wish, when they wish, and how they wish. The only "demand"--if you want to call it that--that we ever make to reviewers who request a review copy is that they actually review the product at some point, which I appreciate Matt doing here.

    • @BoardGameBollocks
      @BoardGameBollocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Thanks for your comments Jamey.
      I was referring to the demands placed upon content creators by the industry in general and not any particular instructions from you, which I admit I failed to read in their entirety.
      In the years I’ve been reviewing board games I’ve seen a definite shift in how reviewers operate and how, in my opinion, they’ve become tied to the industry zeitgeist whether it be for monetary or ideological reasons.
      I was merely saying, quite forcefully as I’m a passionate human being, that opening that door is dangerous.
      What we mustn’t lose sight of though is that games are but lumps of cardboard…

      @@BoardGameBollocks Thanks for clarifying. I'm sorry about the shift you're feeling, and I hope you always feel welcome to freely share your opinions about games (or any topic). • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Wolcik3000 No one was disallowed from doing anything; I simply requested that reviewers wait to play with one of the seven continents until they received the replacement cards (which are mechanically identical). In most regions, we sent the replacement cards 1-2 weeks ago.
